CLARENCE LAMB 1 1 'S' ' I X Aw rl' Q I This has been a very eventful school year. In the field of entertainment, we now have Jazz Combo. This is fine - except for the fact that no one yet has heard them play anything. Good luck in the futurel We also gained a fine Drill Team. This fine group has performed many times. Their exhibitions have always been successful - except when faced by a large crowd at the tournament! We believe that they were also of monetary value - many people came to see the drill team perform. As most people in the town and RHS already know, the plans for the new school build ing were voted down in a special town meeting this winter. This Year, plans for tearing down the present elementary school building and building a new one on the same site are going to be submitted at town meeting. A new building across the way which would complement our own good-looking structure and relieve us of the sixth grade, is greatly to be desired. Classes have been graduating from Rangeley High School since 1907. This past year a great deal of interest has been shown in a Rangeley High School Alumni Association, and in an effort to bring this project to fnrition, certain data concerning our graduates have become available. The following predictions for the 1959 graduates are made for the year 2000, based upon what has happened to all students who have graduated from RHS during the past half century. Only three members of the present class of twelve are likely to be living in Rangeley in the year 2000. Four will be living in other areas of Maine, while of the remaining five probably two will live in Massachusetts, one each in Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire. The total number of graduates is 640, 271 boys and 369 girls. Sixteen girls and 19 boys have passed away. Graduates remaining in Rangeley number 164. Graduates living in other parts of Maine number 190. The remainder are residing in 31 other states and two foreign countries. Nine are in the service overseas. Recently we held a successful casserole supper, and we are very enthusiastic over plans for our annual Lakarnival, which will be held in March. And, of course, we will hold the traditional Junior and Senior Proms in the spring. We're proud of the fact that our class supports many school activities. We contributed six boys and two girls to the basketball teams, plus two cheerleaders, three drill team members, and two Indian majorettes. We also have a group of actors and actresses in the crowd, four of them displaying their talents in 'No More Homework, the annual three-act play. We wish to congratulate Mr. Lamb on his new position as Principal and thank him for willing his home room to us. We'd also like to thank our class advisor, Mrs. Oakes for all the support she gives our class. I think she'd like to see us go to Washington on our class tripl We would tool ! 'No More Homework The play chosen for the annual 3-act dramatic production was, 'No More Homework, which, as the title suggests, is a comedy about school. Imagine the Student Council running the school for a whole dayl 'I'hat's exactly what happens when Mr. Lindquist. the principal, fPaul Harndenj takes off for a Principals' Meeting. The school secretary, Kathy Ross, gets sick with a cold fplease pass the Kleenexl and Carl Eastwood, President of the School Board, won't let them close the school. B. I. Judkins and Stewart Kidder take over the duties of running the school and run into more trouble than you can imagine. She rings the fire alarm bell by mistake and gets Miss Goodin fSally Sandstromj in a dither. Judy Davidson is the science teacher, very sensitive to heat, and Lisette Dumas is concerned about the great play that she is directing. Tallulah CSusan McLaffertyJ is the high school's gift to The The-ah-ter. When she pretends to be sick, sly Shalimar fBarbara Fraserl steps ln as a troublemaker. Romeo Coleman Saunders is the star of Coach Thomas Doak's basketball team and has to stay after school the night of the big game. Candy Tibbetts knows all the latest gossip and Jack Kidder doesn't know much of anything except that he likes to sleep. The confirmed bachelor fDavid Targettl decides not to be so confirmed after all, as the Ames High School play goes off with a bang. Not part of the student body, but definitely a part of the school are Tick Tok, the janitor, fFrank Davisj and Mrs. Ratchet, the cleaning woman, lBrenda Bubierj who are forever bickering over whom the mop pail belongs to. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Oakes and Mr. Lamb. We are looking forward to the annual 1-act plays now. Judy Davidson '59 , Of? A ' K mm K Www FRONT ROW, left to right: A. Haley, M. The first practice proved to be a successful one, although the calisthenics were a little hard to get used to after a long summer vacation without them. The squad consisted of 13 girls, most of them coming from the sophomore and fresh- man classes. Susan McLafferty was the only girl representing the senior class, while the junior class contributed Barbara Judkins and Linda Lowell. The sophomore class, con- sisting of more energetic students, presented Joan Collins, Kathy Ross, Judy Field, and Barbara Bennett. The freshman class, with the younger members, gave us Mildred Ellis, Pamela Millbury, Virginia Lavallee, Brenda Bubier, Jane Durgin, and Jennice Ross. Susan McLafferty and Barbara Judkins were chosen captains for the season. We started the season by winning the easy games but failing to score high when the harder games faced us. Some of the games proved to be so easy that the coach had to play the second team all the time so that we wou1dn't rack up too high a score. All the girls on the squad got a chance to play in some of the games, which has helped them to gain more experience, and will cause them to be better players in the future. Our season record Qof 7 wins and 3 lossesj wasn't the best, but it was good enough to put us in third place in the League. We wish to express our thanks to Miss Lasselle for all the time she has spent with us as our coach, and also to Nancy Wilbur for the wonderful job she has done as manager. Among these were just two seniors, Mike Lowell and Tom Doak. Juniors on the squad were Doug Barrett, David Priest, Carl Eastwood, Harly Huntoon, Paul Harnden, and Brian Ellis. Sophomores reporting were John Brackett, Everett Quimby, Albert Hamm, Bill Ellis, and Charlie Dumas. Representing the Freshmen were Curt Pillsbury, Karl Davidson, and Iack Kidder. This season was not so successful as was expected, but among our twelve wins, one of the most exciting games was the game against New Sharon on our home court. After being twelve points down at the half, we fought back and at the final buzzer were on top by one point. We captured a third place trophy this year at the Franklin County Tournament, after downing Kingfield, being swamped by Wilton, and then clobbering New Sharon, the league leaders, 54-43. At the Regionals we had bad luck. After being nine points up at the half, we lost a heartbreaker to Kingfield, 39-43. We wound up with a seasonal record of 12 wins and 5 losses. All of us on the basketball squad wish-to thank Mr. Coombs for all his time and effort We all hope he will be with us for next season. Next year l will have a drill team performing at the halves. Sure, I said, and so it was. Why should I believe him? The year dawned and, sure enough, ten boys stood on the floor for our first practice. 'Need two more, said Mr. Coombs. Quite forcefully we brought two more and so our first practice began. Two weeks later we had learned - well, almost learned - our facing movements. Life went on and we had our first performance. The crowd loved it. During the Nation al Anthem, Clinton, flag bearer, shook tremendouslyg but no one noticed. From then on we were a success. We have done diagonals, a High Noon dramatic sketch, with difficulty, have hanged Tom Dooly, and have executed many other spectaculars. Finally we made the tournament. We did, or tried to do, our famous Sound-off. lt went horribly. The front line turned at different intervals, Then came the climax. We won't say who fMr. Davisj but somebody did a left face on the command, right face, klllu we were off. The next day we did worse, but the crowd liked it. They must have, for they laughed very hard. I wish Mr. Coombs had!! So we are organized - The Rangeley Drill Team - devoted Cmost of the timej and perfect fnone of the timej. We all do wish to express our thanks to Mr. Coombs for spending his time and energy with us, for he gets nothing from this except headaches. Rex Bradbury '60 Af Q4 . X7 Q ,.
