IEDIITORHALS As the ftrst graduatmg class of the Rangeley l-hgh School ftfty years ago we have been asked to wrtte an arttcle for the 1957 TATTLER, we would ltke to begm by telltng you where we went to school that ts the drffer ent butldmgs Our fxrst schoolhouse was located near the present resrdence of Kenneth Hmkley and we went to school there both downstaxrs and upstaxrs About 1898 the schools were graded durrng the supermtendeucy of Mrs Sylvader Htnkley and the upper grades were transferred to the butldmg now occupied by Brackett and Bradbury whrch at that trme was the town hall In 1903 the fust school butldtng was buxlt on the present srte of the grade school and that was where our class and several of the others completed thetr hxgh school educatron The hrgh school room was the end room on the second floor next to Pleasant Street and was butlt to be a laboratory but the school was so small they used tt for the htgh school for several years Mr Harry L Bradford who we all hope w1ll be able to be wrth us on the Ftftreth Annxversary was prxnclpal of the hrgh school for three of the four years that we were 1r1 hrgh school As we remember rt there were two courses college preparatory and Engltsh Course and most of the puprls took the college preparatory course At that ume m the hrgh school there were th1rty sxx weeks tn the year and the other grades were thlrty so that two weeks of each term we had the school butldlng all to our selves and were gtven a pretty free rem wtthm reason and one of us fyou can easrly guess whtch onej certamly made the most of those OPPOITLIIIIIICS We had practtcally no athletlc program The gtrls had none and the boys were al lowed to box tn the basement usually under the supervxslon of the prmctpal In fact we had boxmg gloves back m the ftrst butldtng we attended The only other athlettc act1 v1t1es up to the ttme we were graduated were two games of baseball played agamst the West Rangeley team of whrch each team was the wtnner once The last game whrch we won went we thtnk twelve or fourteen tnnmgs and Lynwood Carlton p1tched the whole game We would lrke to mention that rn the fxrst Track Meet held at Phlllrps rn 1908 rn whxch there were ten events Rangeley dxd not have a poxnt unttl the ftfth event when Lynwood Carlton won the football krck and started the ball rolltng and from there on Rangeley l-hgh School gathered twenty mne potnts to win the meet Thrs has seemed to be a charactertstlc of R H S more or less ever smce as we belteve lf you have followed the basketball teams you will ftnd that generally speakmg they have scored more pornts tn the last half of their games and as you well know they pay off at the wtre when tt came ttme for graduatron tt took practtcally the whole htgh school to make a graduauon The 1907 program shows that of those takxng part all are ltvmg but one Phrlxp O Pxllsbury Class of 1908 who passed away shortly after graduatmg from the Umverstty of Mame Betng a small class and havxng no way of raxstng money through the years as IS done now when the questton of music came up the bustness men of the town, under the leadershlp of John A Russell pard for an orchestra from Farmtngton Mame We have always apprecrated thls The superintendent of schools m 1907 was Francls E. ln conclusron we would like to say that we have always been very proud to have been the fxrst class to be graduated from Rangeley l-lrgh School and we have followed ns actrvmes wtth very much tnterest ever since l-hgh school is a very great experrence but tt IS only the start to ht us for lrfe s work and graduates stnce who have attended college have ranked well rn thetr professrons Whlle educatlon rs a wonderful thrng we would lrke to pornt out that that alone wtthout character and perseverance does not make a successful llfe Wtnrfred H Berry 07 Harold B McCard 07 OUR MONU MENTAL PA ST In foregone years our edrtorrals have many trmes concemed themselves wrth our school s and students problems we spoke rn support of stx man football rn 1940 In 44 we praised the Home Ec Department for processmg several hundred cans of food remarked about the govemmental demanded course Radro Code and menttoned that a physrcal educatron program was now a regular course It was offered to boys and grrls for 215 mxnutes a week We ltsted some changes rn the hrgh school burldtng of 1947 New metal backboards had been tnstalled a Manual Trarnrng teacher had been secured movres were bemg used to teach subjects and some new Shakespearxan record albums had been purchased through the Dramatrcs Fund Today a group of students may organrze a club qurte easrly Our Student Actrvmes edrtorral of 49 was requestrng trme and cooperatron among the students lt asked for clubs to be organrzed among many non pamcrpants of sports and dramatrcs Our new school schedule provrdes the trme for club actrvmes and rt rs used to advantage xng den and praxsed a new shower partruon We also mentioned that a program for new desks and charrs for the mam room had been started At last thrs year rt became a reality Psychology was xntroduced rn our school currtculum 1l'l 1953 We strll have this sub ject and many students enjoy rt A Guidance Program was dxscussed also and we know that thrs year the Rotary Club has considered helping wrth rt We spoke for a new stage drrver tratntng course and a gymnasrum tn 1954 To date we have a new and better stage Both Stratton and Strong have Drrver s Educatron but we don t Strong has a new gym but we don t In 1955 we deplored our lack of that tntangrble subject, school sprrtt We are sure thrs has been remedied Thrs year we belreve that school spurt rs at an all trme hrgh We hope the future Senrors and other students wrll use these words of experrence school spurt rs not mherrted from one year to the next rt rs either 10.-rt or acqutred each year Including thrs year 351 gtrls and 258 boys have graduated from Rangeley ln frfty years more we hope that these frgures wrll more than double Student actrvrtres of Rangeley Hrgh School have been successful thts year we thank the teachers and students who have made thrs statement possrble WING S MARKET 8a MADRID BARN Sponsored by PHILLIPS OIL CO.
