Thrs year the Lrons Club sponsored an essay contest on the sub 1ect Rangeley s Great est Need A commxttee of therr Judges gave the ftrst pnze of S10 to Harland Huntoon 60 the second prrze of 57 to Ltsette Dumas the thud of S5 to Helen Mttchell and the fourth pnze of S3 to Nellre lvers we take pleasure rn publtshmg the ftrst prrze essay RANGELEY S GREATEST NEED Rangeley s greatest need rs an mdustry whrch would employ forty or frfty people However before thts can be realrzed we must have a larger and cheaper way of gener atrng electrrclty At present the power system supplymg Rangeley s crtrzens with electrtcrty IS made quate and expenstve Whrle I do not know all the reasons for thrs lt appears that our present plant rsn t large enough to supply the present demand and probably needs to be rebutlt and have larger generators rnstalled The present system of course was set up many years ago when the demand for electrrclty was much smaller As our present system rs generated hydroelectrrcally the amount of water rn Kennebago Rrver may be msuffrcrent to generate a larger amount If that rs true a change of locanon would tn volve a great deal of money After readrng of some of the government hydroelectrrc plants l am wonderrng rf there rs any way that Rangeley and the surroundrng regrons could secure the benefrts of a stmrlar type Govemment projects are usually able to produce at a much lower cost and so can sell to the publrc at a much lower rate Assummg that we have rn our reglon adequate electrtcal power to run a small mdus try the frrst step would be to ftnd an lndustry wrllmg to set up tts plant rn Rangeley lt would seem natural that rt would be some sort of woodworlung concern as our only re source of commerctal value rs lumber The Chamber of Commerce would be the logrcal means of ftndmg rnterested prospects for brrngtng such an lndustry to Rangeley lf such an mdustry could be tnstalled what would be the benefrts to Rangeley? It would provide sorely needed employment for our permanent restdents Our populatron would rncrease brtngrng more busmess to our stores and more tax money to our town treasury For the past few years there has been mcreaslng demand for a community burldrng wrth gymnasium factlrtres The argument agatnst rt has always been that the town could not afford rt A new means of rncome mrght enable us to afford thrs very worthwhtle addrtton to our communtty Of course any slzeable addrtron to our population would rncrease the number of school chtldren As our schools are already crowded some addition to the school buildrngs would be necessary As thrs rs gorng to be needed anyway the town would be better srtuated ftnancxally to meet the demand 5 The vartous clubs and organrzatrons would benefit from new members with new rdeas Whlle thrs may take years to be realrzed rn the meanttme all progressrve mrnded resrdents of Rangeley should grve th1s matter careful constderatron by Harland Rupert Huntoon 60 Sponsored by BOB S PLACE Phrlllps Marne 1. ln conclusron we would like to say that we have always been very proud to have been the fxrst class to be graduated from Rangeley l-lrgh School and we have followed ns actrvmes wtth very much tnterest ever since l-hgh school is a very great experrence but tt IS only the start to ht us for lrfe s work and graduates stnce who have attended college have ranked well rn thetr professrons Whlle educatlon rs a wonderful thrng we would lrke to pornt out that that alone wtthout character and perseverance does not make a successful llfe Wtnrfred H Berry 07 Harold B McCard 07 OUR MONU MENTAL PA ST In foregone years our edrtorrals have many trmes concemed themselves wrth our school s and students problems we spoke rn support of stx man football rn 1940 In 44 we praised the Home Ec Department for processmg several hundred cans of food remarked about the govemmental demanded course Radro Code and menttoned that a physrcal educatron program was now a regular course It was offered to boys and grrls for 215 mxnutes a week We ltsted some changes rn the hrgh school burldtng of 1947 New metal backboards had been tnstalled a Manual Trarnrng teacher had been secured movres were bemg used to teach subjects and some new Shakespearxan record albums had been purchased through the Dramatrcs Fund Today a group of students may organrze a club qurte easrly Our Student Actrvmes edrtorral of 49 was requestrng trme and cooperatron among the students lt asked for clubs to be organrzed among many non pamcrpants of sports and dramatrcs Our new school schedule provrdes the trme for club actrvmes and rt rs used to advantage xng den and praxsed a new shower partruon We also mentioned that a program for new desks and charrs for the mam room had been started At last thrs year rt became a reality Psychology was xntroduced rn our school currtculum 1l'l 1953 We strll have this sub ject and many students enjoy rt A Guidance Program was dxscussed also and we know that thrs year the Rotary Club has considered helping wrth rt We spoke for a new stage drrver tratntng course and a gymnasrum tn 1954 To date we have a new and better stage Both Stratton and Strong have Drrver s Educatron but we don t Strong has a new gym but we don t In 1955 we deplored our lack of that tntangrble subject, school sprrtt We are sure thrs has been remedied Thrs year we belreve that school spurt rs at an all trme hrgh We hope the future Senrors and other students wrll use these words of experrence school spurt rs not mherrted from one year to the next rt rs either 10.-rt or acqutred each year Including thrs year 351 gtrls and 258 boys have graduated from Rangeley ln frfty years more we hope that these frgures wrll more than double Student actrvrtres of Rangeley Hrgh School have been successful thts year we thank the teachers and students who have made thrs statement possrble WING S MARKET 8a MADRID BARN Sponsored by PHILLIPS OIL CO.
