In recent years you have read many essays on what our school lacks, not in the sense of equipment, but in what the students fail to show. What it lacks can be only one thing, school spirit. Many people believe that school is just for studying and extra curricular activities such as clubs and sports. M3-Ybe that is all a school is for, but it also includes the attitude . of the students toward these activities, Take one example. Usually we have a rally before each basketball game. This year we have had them only for the import- ant games. The spirit just isn'tthere. What have we lost, students ? Why, in big schools every last person attends and they all pitch in and make all the noise they possibly can, Here many students actually leave the school before the rally begins. They just don't care! Why don't they care ? There could be a number of reasons. I don't know. Now, don't think this is the way all our students feel, for Rangeley has some of the best sports and ardent rooters that I know. If we students of Rangeley High School could visit a college campus to view the pep rallies and demonstrations before each and every game, I sincerely believe we would be overwhelmed. The spirit and enthusiasm they put into it are tremendous. Another instance is the student body's being asked if anyone will 'volunteer to help do some little task. Only a few are willing, Again, there are many reasons that enter iI!t0 the situation, but probably the main one is the lack of interest on the students part. Sooner or later something will have to be done to lift our spirits out of the doldrums, and it's all up to us students. We must take an active interest in all phases of activities no matter what they are. I believe that if we students showed a little more spirit and willingness to do little chores, we would further ourselves in more ways than one. The teachers would, un- doubtedly, give us a little extra, and maybe the townspeople and taxpayers would re- ward us with many of the necessary articles which we don't have. This may seen to many students like a sermon delivered by a preacher, but it is the absolute truth. lt is my belief that if this lack of interest continues, Rangeley will gradually get a blacker and blacker mark beside its name. It's all up to us students! So let's all pitch in and do our share! ! Gary Priest '55 Do You Know What are you going to do when you graduate? If you go on to higher education, where will you go? Are you sure of what you want to do ? All these questions are asked of students, but all too many answer, I don't know. But they should know or at least have a general idea of what type of work they want. Too many, when they graduate, find just any job that is convenient whether they like it or not. Perhaps it is a job that could be done by almost anyone and one which has no future. Still they seem not to care. They miss the fun and adventure of getting out and meeting new people and seeing new places and learning an interesting occupation. Still they seem content, or, if they're not, usually they just grumble about it instead of doing something, Some students don't take the college course because they think that they don't want to go. Two or three years later they decide they dO. but of course they don't have the credits. They are left behind trying to make up those credits, and much time is wasted. They seem to forget that what they get for ranks will make a big difference later in life, Many seem unable to understand that their future depends on what happens now, for Now Is The Future. Don't let this happen to you! Prepare to- day for tomorrow. After all, it is your fu- ture. What are you going to do about it. Eleanor Hinkley ' 56N 1?- 'IR al 1 i . i. .Hr .- s 4 E 1 . Freshman Class History On September 7, 11254, we, the freshman of '54, entered the main room of Rangeley High School. We found one new face in our midst, that of Stanley White, who Came here from Rhode Island. We had lost Carlton Champagne and Anita Morel after graduation from junior high, In November we lost James Boutilier, James MeCvarvey and Stanley White. This year's class officer are: President, Neil Taylor, Vice-President, Alvin Roth, Secretary-Treasurer, Edwin Lowell. Our Student Counril members are Sandra Hunt and Dana Field. We all dreaded the thought of initiation. But we had a dress up only onthe last night when the sophomores gave us a party. We still got our share of being painted. We are now making plans for a major activity to be presented this year. Much credit is due to Miss Getchell and Mr. Huston, our class advisors, who have made our first year in R.H.S. a very pleasant one. J..L Athletics BOYS' BASKETBALL The 1954-1955 basketball season at Range- ley High School began with seven veterans present. They were Gary Priest, Ronald Haines, James McLafferty, Dick Wentzell, Errol Wentzell, and Wally Eustis. Jerry Brackett did not start playing until half way through the season because of an operation. The newcomers to the squad were Jack Pill- sbury, Donald Morton, Edwin Lowell, Neil Taylor, John Philbrick, Carl Harriman, Victor Targett, George Washington, Donald Thompson, Kailen Morin, and Gordon Haley, Range1ey's first game was with Clinton and we lost by one point. At the end of the season we had a total of eight wins and ten losses. Nearly all the games that we lost were very close. Under our new coach, Herb Lush, we had a so-called Post and also an Over- load , which we used against a zone defense, At most of our games we played a man-to- man defense and were quite successful, Rangeley, as most people know, usually pulls an upset at least once a year, This year we pulled a big upset at the Franklin County Tournament when Errol Wentzell sank two foul shots to beat Kingfield by two points, which was the only game Kingfield lost. Rangeley had very good material this year and will have very good material in the coming years. We are also proud of Gary Priest who has set many records during his high school career. The most remarkable one was the 1,122 points he scored in four years, con- sisting of 47 as a Freshman, 325 as a Sopho- more, 329 as a Junior, and 421 as a Senior. The latter also eclipses the 409 points scored by Don Philbrick two years ago for a single season. Gary's new County Tourn- ament records are 16 free throws in one game, 36 points in one game, and 181 points during 4 years of participation. He also scored 38 points in his home finale against Stratton. We all wish him the best of luck in his next years at college. Those who tried their hands at new skills were Elaine Haley, Kailen Morin, Earl Morin, Don Morton, Penny Mitchell, Eddie Lowell, Ronnie Haines, Dana Field, Karen Schildberg, Phillip Dunham, Jane Saunders, Eleanor Hinkley, Neil Taylor, John Phil- brick and James McLafferty. Our first project was working with copper. Each of us chose a picture and with a great deal of help from Mr. Huston, we traced it onto a piece of copper, putting in only the major lines. After much raising and lower- ing of the surfaces of the pictures, we attached them to pieces of wood by bending the edges of the copper sheet. Acid and steel-wool-colored the pictures. Finally the pictures were put onto a large piece of WO0d or background which was coated with linseed oil, and our master-pieces were finished. Although some of them didn't come out so well as we hoped, we had fun trying. The next project is going to be making mugs with wooden handles or gimp bases from bottles, They will be made in sets of either four, six or eight. Penny Mitchell '57 AUDIO - VISUAL CLUB The A-V Club was so large this year that it was decided to divide it into 3 groups. Ronald Haines had group one which consists of: Donald Thompson, Errol Wentzell, Jerry LaPierre, and Jackie Fox. They have worked on the movie projector. In the sec- ond group, which is instructed by John Hinkley are: Phillip Dunham, Edwin Lowell, Gordon Haley, Wally Eustis, Helen Mitchell, Karen Schildberg, and Sandra Hunt. They have worked on the film strip projector. In the third and last group are: Chris Cumming, Donald Morton, Jack Pillsbury, Alvin Roth, and Dick Eustis. Their instructor is Mr, Stickney. This group has learned to operate the tape recorder. We have had several educational movies this year and have progressed rapidly. Karen Schildberg '58 GLEE CLUB At the beginning of the year Mr. Stickney called the first meeting of the Girls' Glee Club. Plans were made to meet every Wed- nesday after school and prepare for the Spring' Concert to be held at Farmington. The enrollment includes: Rose Belisle, Jacqueline Fox, Eldene Roland, Lee Vaughn, Nedra Violette, Josephine Mills, Peggy Thompson, Jane Murphy, Jane Saunders, Barbara Thurston, Beverly Thurston, and Sandra Brackett. Again this year we are trying soprano, second-soprano, and alto. Our songs will include: Over the Rainbow, Adoramus Te Christe, Your Land and My Land, Czecho- Slovakian Dance Song, The Orchestra Song, and My Lord, What a Mornin', We offer our sincere thanks to Mrs. Emery Scribner, Jr. for the co-operation she has given us. A three-act play called Love is Too Much Trouble was presented by the following people: Sandra Holman, Josephine Mills, Eleanor Hinkley,T!l-Elzgygtgvgf Beverly Thurston, Janice Quimby, Eldene Roland, Rose Belisle, Alice Quimby, Guy Haines, John Philbrick, Jerry Brackett, Errol Wentzell, and Wally Eustis. Special credit should be given to Josephine Mills for stepping in at the last minute and taking the place of Jacqueline Fox, who very un- ceremoniously went off to the hospital to present them with her appendix, The next play on our schedule will be the County One-Act Play. We are planning to do the play called Dark Brown. The stars will be Josephine Mills, Jacqueline Fox, John Philbrick, Wally Eustis, Alice Quimby, Eldene Roland, and Rose Belisle. This year We are featuring something very special. Our faculty is going to present the hilarious comedy The Little E Laughed. It will be directed by Mr. Lamb and we all know from the peals of laughter coming from the Kam where they are rehearsing that this can't help being a real hit. Of course there will also be the class One -Act Plays. We do not yet know what plays we will be doing nor who the' actors and actresses will be, but we do know what with Mr. Lamb's directing they can't help being highly successful, In the Annual One-Act Play Contest held at Strong on March 23, all the schools in the county were entered except Wilton Academy and New Sharon, Rangeley won the coveted first place trophy for the third consecutive year. The vehicle this year was the tense melodrama, Dark Brown with the following comprising the cast: Jacqueline Fox, Alice Quimby, Josephine Mills, Eldene Roland, Wallace Eustis, Rose Belisle, and John Philbrick. The play was directed by Clarence Lamb, and Mrs. Hunger was in charge of make-up. Second place was awarded to Jay, and third place went to Strong. This year the County Prize Speaking Contest was conducted in such a way as to allow each school to enter a contestant in each of three divisions: oratory, humor, and dramatics. All schools in the county were entered in the afternoon preliminaries, March 31, and evening finalists included two from Phillips foration and humorl, two from Wilton Qoration and dramaticsl, two from Rangeley fhumor and dramaticsl, one from Farmington fhumorl, one from Kingfield Qdramaticsl, and one from Strong Qorationl. Rangeley did not enter a contestant in oratory, which was won by Wilton, but Walked off with top honors in both humor and dramatics. Rose Belisle won first place with her dramatic inter- pretation of The Old Lady and the Clock. John Philbrick won a first-place medal in the humorous division with his clever presentation of David Garrick, 31 Th ree-Act Play STANDING: A. Quimby, J. Philbrick, J, Brackctt, R.
