EDITORIAL Last September when the doors of Rangeley High School opened for the current year, the student body was confronted by many new faces among the faculty. As Mr. Allen, the former principal had resigned suddenly just prior to the reopening of school in order to accept the Su- perintendency at Phillips, there was a new prin- cipal, Mr. Lawrence Stuart. The Shop had a new supervisor, Mr. Harold Huston, and Home Economics was headed by Miss Virginia Stevens. The teaching of languages was in the hands of Miss Gloria Hall, and Miss Ellanore Edwards was the new seventh grade teacher. The Com- mercial department was in charge of Mr. Doug- las Blanchard, who was to be the coach of bas- ketball, also. There was even a new janitor, Earl Williams, who was to be replaced in the spring by Kenneth Dahne. There were other changes besides those of faculty replacements. Early in the fall a Student Council was formed to assist the principal in working out school problems with greater effec- tiveness. Delegates to this Council are as fol- lows: Frances Steward and Ronald Edwards, freshmen, Annabelle Ellis and Earle Fletcher, sophomores, Louise Lamb and David Porter, juniors, Jennie Holman and Richard Maclvcr, seniors, Maryland Steward and Gary Priest, junior high. One of the first problems con- sidered by the Council was that of the dailv reci- tation program. It was felt that it would be more desirable to have a rotation program but one not exactly the same as the one commonly in use. A plan was finally devised whereby the school day was shortened by forty-five minutes, each day's program was different throughout any given week but every week was uniform, and the entire set-up was in keeping with State law. At first the students were a bit bewildered and many were not in favor of adopting it, but the Council decided to give it a try-out for a week. At the end of that week the students found that it had many advantages and on Oc- tober 9 the new system was acknowledged as final. Throughout the year the Council has settled several financial and social problems and has aided materially in making the year a much bet- ter one than it would otherwise have been. DAVID Ponrim '52 EDITORIAL The years have seen a procession of Tattlexs come and go, and there goes on forever in each of them the annual plea for an adequate gym and auditorium. We can only add our poor plea again this year, as the need still exists and always will until something is done about it. Indeed, the need becomes more imperative with each passing year. Everyone realizes that we do not have sufficient space for basketball games, for banquets, for dances, or for the proper staging of dramatics. It is not only for these functions as they pertain to the school but as they would be utilized and appreciated by various town or- ganizations that a Community Building is needed. Also, as a summer resort, Rangeley is a logical place for many outside conventions to hold forth. Some already do, but under cramped and crowded conditions. Others would bring business to the region had we the room for them to hold forth in! With sufficient space Rangeley could serve as host to the annual basketball tournament and to the preliminaries of the State Drama Tournament, to mention only a few cen- ters of interest. We could go on endlessly, list- ing the benefits and advantages to be derived from such a building, but our readers already know them well. So we will content ourselves with a great deal of wishful thinking, knowing that we are keeping our consciences clear by once more putting this plea in print for all to see and be lightly reprimanded by! It .seems incredible! After our long hard struggle over a period of twelve years we've finally made it! We started the year by electing the following officers: president, Richard Mac- Iverg Vice President, john MacPherson 3 secre- tary-treasurer, Jennie Holman. We were again represented well in both boys' and girls' basketball. Jennie Holman and Gerry Murphy have done a swell job representing the Seniors. The following boys also did a grand job, displaying fine competition with the best of schools: John MacPherson, Richard Maclver, Page Eleven Billy Dunham, Robert Lee, and Roy West. We also presented an unusual play, Sub- merged, directed by Mr. Lamb with the fol- lowing cast: Billy Churchill, who was the lead- ing actor of the night, John MacPherson, Rus- sell Boutlier, Richard Maclver, Roy West, and Paul Field. A very realistic stage set was con- structed by the Seniors. We wish to thank all the teachers and friends for helping us with our most successful year in Rangeley High School. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY This year the juniors have gone political in a big way, having had not only elections but also reelections. For the first part of the year our officers were: president, Oneida Wilkinsg vice- president, Dick Stanchfieldg treasurer, David Porterg secretary, Louise Lamb. When the second semester rolled around, we were otlicered as follows: president, Dick Stanchfieldg vice- president, Dick johnsong treasurer, Ernest Stew- ardg secretary, Louise Lamb. At Christmas we sponsored the annual party for the student body, not a money-making pro- position but an opportunity to be in the true spirit of the season and spread cheer. Plans are now being formulated for the annual junior Prom, which this year will be held on May llth It is being predicted that the event will be one Page Thirteen of the best Proms Rangeley has seen for some time. Our class was well represented in basketball, as we provided Clayton Philbrick and Big joe McLafIerty for the first string, with Dick johnson bringing up the rear! In the interclass games we finished third. In the interclass One-Act Play Contest we presented Minnie Field with a cast made up of all boys, some of whom had never trod the boards before. We found there were embryonic, incipient, and potential Thespians in our midst! We tied with the sophomores for second place. Next year we hope to continue to be a credit to Rangeley High when we shall lead all the rest as the honored seniors. Gary Priest was voted by the class to be on the Stu' dent Couneil. ln Home Economics we have made dresses. skirts. and blouses: in Industrial Arts the outstanding projeet has been a hot dog master, Mcmst of the girls belong to the Glee Club where we sing under the direction of Miss Reeves. The boys do wood working in the Hob- by Club. We were all very proud of Josephine Nlills and Rose lielisle when they won a cup at the Farmington Musie Festival. The girls have had Physical Education under the instruction of Miss Edwards. who is now teaching us to danee. The boys have done a good job this year in basketball. In the tournament between the fifth, sixth. seventh. and eighth grades. the eighth grade beat the sixth grade quite badly. The fifth gave the seventh quite a scare before they finally bowed. ln the Consolation between the fifth and sixth the latter won easily. The final between the seventh and eighth was a thriller. The eighth led at the half 6-5 with the seventh leading at the end of the third quarter l5-9. Then Gary Priest came in to try to help out his team and the eighth won by the score of I9-17, As the .Iunior High will not have baseball, some of the boys are going to practice with the High School. SEVENTH GRADE HISTORY Having graduated from the building across the street, we entered the brick high school building with a feeling of pride and interest. At first. to our dismay, we had no desks or chairs. but had to sit on benches. However, after a while, our new desks and chairs arrived and we felt much better. Our teachers were Miss Edwards, Miss Stevens. Miss Reeves, and Mr. Martin. Our class numbered twenty-four at the beginning of the year but we have slimmed down to eighteen now. We have had wonder- ful times in the gym playing volley ball. basket- Page Seventeen ball, and other games. We also had some en- joyable parties at Hallowe'en, Christmas, and Valentine's. We have joined many Clubs and have been instructed in Physical Education. l'Ve have been taken to Phillips for dental care and to Farmington for eye examinations. W'e are now trying to learn to dance and have learned how to waltz, fox trot. and do square dances. Our year has been a happy one and it is our hope that we can all stay together as we con- tinue our education. The TATTLER Freshman Class History Continued from page I5 Both girls and boys had class teams for bas- ketball. In the inter-class games both boys and girls lost, but they were good sports. The girls all had a chance to play in public games. The ones most enjoyed by the Freshmen were those with Andover and Mexico. Much credit is due the coach, Miss Hall, for our good times in this sport. Some of the boys were on the J.V. Team. The One-Act Play, Wilbur's Wild Night, was given in competition with the other three classes. Here, again, Miss Hall coached us. Her patience was endless, although some of us won- dered how it could last. The results were not too bad, considering we were F reshmen-so wc were told. As this paper goes to press, we are to have 11 Square Dance at the Lodge Hall. We do hope it is a success, as this is our only remaining chance of increasing our Hnances this year. As Freshmen, we want to thank the upper classes for their kindness to us, also we appre- ciate the patience and understanding of all of our teachers. R. In the State Classic, the following week, we were rated second and hoped to go through this tour- ney. We played Standish at 9:30 in the morn- ing in what proved to be a thriller, with Range- ley putting on the heat in the last three minutes of play. In the semi-finals Rangeley couldn't do anything right and lost to West Paris 45-36. Four of the first Eve went out via the foul route. We wish to thank our coach for spending so much time with the team, and also the towns- people for the great support they gave us. Lawrence 4 FATHER-AND-SON GAME At the second annual father-and-son game, the mothers and daughters were invited for added attraction. Everybody knew the boys were too powerful for the fathers and of course the old ladies just couldn't withstand the test of their spry and scrappy daughters. In the first game the girls and the mothers came out and a cheer went up that almost took the top of the gym off. The mothers were dressed in men's pajamas, or were supposed to be, while the girls were in three-cornered pants, a good place for them! In the Hrst half the mothers looked a bit green and out of place, but in the second half they began to roll, even on the Hoor. The referees, John and Bob, as the girls said, were unfair . And the mothers said, They did a swell job. The mothers won. In the second contest before the packed house of 400 or thereabouts the fathers were pitted against the sons. The fathers, you under- stand, wanted a fair and clean game and so went to work and imported a referee from the N.B.A. What a character! He had a long pointed nose, and glasses, the couldn't see any- wayj, and a gun no less. At the start of the game the ref stood at midcourt with the ball, a good sized one at that - about 34 inches around. The boys were held scoreless by the fathers and sometimes by the imported ref, who was soon to be exported. At the end of the game, come to find out, both the mothers and fathers went home victorious. Proceeds were used to finance the banquet given for the teams. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Although they didn't quite win the League Cup. the Rangeley Lassies had a good season under the tutelage of their new coach, Miss Gloria Hall. They are most appreciative of the time and help she gave them. A squad of sixteen girls appeared for the first practice. There were nine veterans and seven new members from the freshman class, who proved to he a great asset to the team. During scrimmage one day it was discovered that one ol the guards was an excellent shot and so for the rest of the season Anna Belle Ellis alternated hetween guard and forward positions as the lluctuating emergencies of the game dictated. By the process of graduation Jennie Holman and Gerry Murphy will be lost to next year's team. hut with scorers like Ada Field and Ruth Scrib- ner coming up. Rangeley High stands a very good chance of having a winning team when the season opens next December.
