The Jackets defeated the powerful Generals, 8-O. The 1964 football season began with a new head coach, a new assistant coach, and only two se- niors on the squad. The team faltered on occa- sion, as a team predominated by sophomores and freshmen will, and managed to compile only a 3- 6 record. However, this does include a cherished 8-0 win over the Washington 81 Lee Generals which ended an extended drought of losses inflicted by this small college toughie. The season started on a losing note, as one of the top small college teams in the nation, Sus- quehanna, handed a 42-0 defeat to the Jackets. The W 81 L triumph followed, but after that it was just a case of too much inexperience among the young gridders. Arch-rival Hampden- Sydney continued its mastery over the Jackets in football, as they won at Death Valley, 20-O. The season was not without its individual standouts, however, as several players were named to all-conference teams. Bill Baumeister, soph. co-captain, was chosen to the first team All Mason-Dixon and first team All Virginia Small College. joining the lanky tackle from Tennessee on the two first teams was Junior center Dave

Walker from West Virginia. The offense was led by a pint-size operative named Bill Rippon. Di- recting the team from his quarterback position, Rippon ran and passed his way to honorable mention on the All Small College and All Mason-Dixon teams. Wayne Overton, freshman end from Richmond also made honorable men- tion All-Small College, as did soph. tackle sensa- tion Mike Norton. These two standouts were high school teammates. Rippon and Norton were also 2nd team All Mason-Dixon. The punting chore was handled by freshman, Ed Neal, and this fullback from Danville launched 40 kicks for a 36.8 average. Coaches Keller and Teefey look to the future with a gleam in their eye, as they see dawning a new era in football on the Ashland campus. Carrying on a tedius recruiting program, the staff has signed many top high-school scholastic- athletic standouts. Included, in this array of fu- ture talent are several local boys, and as they de- velop, local support develops. This, too, is an in- tregal part of a successful football program. Coach Keller talks over game instructions with his captains Bob McCo Bill Baumeister. cfwwf at 'Q I tnnuunm. nnell and 31
