Besides his administrative duties as athletic director, Sanford continued as head coach in football, basketball, and baseball, but he obtained a strong group of assistants to aid him. Bill Robertson-who served as assistant coach one year before entering the Navy- returned to the campus last summer. He coached the backfield during football season and then tutored the Yellow Jacket swimming and track teams. A lack of coaches to train such a large squad was only one of the many prob- lems which faced thc Jackets from the out- set. However, early in October, the Ran- dolph-Macon officials signed jack Sanford- brother of the Head Coach-and Boyd XV.lliams as Assistant Coaches, and the sit- uation took on a brighter light as the exist- ing problems were solved one by one. From the opening practice session, Sanford was forced to stage a battle against time in his attempt to get the Yellow Jackets ready for their first game on September 21. For a fortnight, the Jackets held two workouts daily trying to round into top shape after a three year respite and to install a smooth working T formation. XVith everyone realizing that the squad had not yet reached its peak, the Yellow Jackets made their debut for the 1946 campaign in Richn1ond's City Stadium by absorbing a 46-0 whipping from their arch rivals-the highly tutored University of .Richmond Spiders. The following week-end, 'Coach Taylor Sanford matched his new 'T formation against Frank Dobson's 'tried and proven single-wing oifense. .Playing in Newport News, the Maconites .still appeared jittery and allowed the Ap- prentice School gridders to amass 20 points lbefore they could get their own offensive :machine into operation. Trailing by this :three touchdown margin at the intermis- sion, the jackets came back in the second half and for the first time in the season saw results come from their T-formed attack when they pushed across two tallies in the third Wriod. However, the R-M squad was unable to overtake the Shipbuilders and bowed by a 20-13 count. The first two week-ends in October brought no joy to Randolph-Macon as the Jackets went against strong elevens from the University of Delaware and Guilford College. Going south into North Carolina on October 12, the Jackets found new life in the Tarheel state and outgained the Quakers in the air and on the ground, but the Guilford outfit capitalized on every 'lf39!' i P M11-. .. break to send Sanford and his boys homewith their fourth setback of the year. The next week saw great improvement come to the Yellow Jackets both in their maneuvering and spirit on the gridiron, and on October 19, Randolph-Macon went to Death Valley to renew its traditional rivalry with Hampden-Sydney. The Jackets-rated as a two touchdown underdog-completely outplayed the Tigers, ruining the Bengal's Homecoming celebrations with a 6-0 victory. With the savour of victory still on their tongues, the Maconites attempted to stay in their Winning ways when they met Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on the last week-end in October. The Lemon and Black team contracted its first serious case of fumbleitis, and when the Medics at the Balti- more institution refused to consider the malady, John Hopkins had little difficulty in taking a 24-8 triumph. The month of November brought the Yellow jackets to their home grounds-Day Field-for the first time in the 1946 campaign. During the first six games, all of which were played away, the Yellow Jackets managed to use their stingers effectively only once, but better days were in store when they returned to Ashland to win two of their final four contests. Opening the home stand on November 2, the Jackets staged their best performance of the year by trouncing Washington College, 32-7. Sanford's boys were the masters all the way, scoring at will and exhibiting both a strong aerial and over- land assault. However, Randolph-Macon was again unable to stay in a winning fashion, and on the subsequent week-end, was overpowered by Western Maryland, 27-O. The R-M Homecoming celebrations on November 16 were going according to schedule until midway the afternoon when the Jackets took the field against Hampden-Sydney for the second game of the season. But a return of the fumbleitis malady proved fatal to the Lemon and Black and the Tigers got revenge for the earlier setback by ruining the day's fes- tivities with a 14-6 victory. The boys from Death Valley tallied twice in the opening half, but had to repulse numerous R-M scoring threats before taking the contest which was witnessed by a record-breaking crowd of 4,000 persons. Five times the Jackets drove inside Hampden-Sydney's 20-yard line, but five times something went wrong and Randolph- Macon was unable to push across the final stripe. The Maconites brought the curtains down on the 1946 schedule on the following Saturday by taking a 14-13 win over YVofford College. For the first time in many years, Randolph-Macon had Herculean power in the reserve ranks, and was able to field a B-squad. The Baby Jackets-tutored by Jack Sanford--had a fairly successful year by winning three games, losing two, and tieing three. haiku!! After only a Week and a half of drills on the Alumni gymnasium hardwoods, the R-M quintet made its season's debut on December 6 by soundly thrashing a Weak Union Theologicali'iSeminary team, 67-33. The Jackets ex- tremely accurate from the floor considering the short amount of practice which they had under their belts, and had l.ttle diiliculty in overcoming the Theologians. On the versity outfit. The Washington boys won a 42-38 over- time contest from the Randolph-Macon team. Twenty-four hours later the Jackets stopped in at Baltimore and suffered their second conference defeat at the hands of Loyola. A strong second half rally gave the Greyhounds the 63-51 verdict. The Jackets returned to their home floor on the 16th of December, but were still unable to break into the win column in league competition, bowing to a strong Ameri- can University team, S1-48. A Maconite rally in the final following night, the Lemon and Black cagers-still a bit jittery from lack of experience-threw a scare at Gus Tebell and his Cavaliers for three quarters before the University of Virginia team managed to take a 55-43 verdict. The Jackets grabbed the lead early and held a 30-29 advantage at the intermission. Midway the second half, the Cavaliers broke away and the tired Yellow Jackets were unable to do much about it. On the week-end of December 13, the Maconite five took to the road for the first time, stepping into Mason- Dixon conference competition against the Catholic Uni- 'l73l- quarter fell short in this game. After having lost four consecutive contests, the Jackets restored the savors of victory to their hungry mouths by defeating the Lynch- burg College team, 44-36, in a game which brought the pre-holiday schedule to a close. Resuming action during the first Week of the new year, Coach Sanford's team racked up its third Win by defeating the Medical College of Virginia cagers, 53-41, in Rich- mond. On the night of January 11, the Five Small Boys were still unable to capture their first conference game and were defeated by Johns Hopkins, 41-38. The local lads held the advantage for a good portion of this game, but height again proved to be the deciding factor and the Blue Jays from Baltimore had plenty of it. Old man Hard Luck moved into the Jacket Gymna- sium during the middle of January and the local cagers dropped two heartbreaking contests to Hampden-Sydney and Roanoke Colleges, both of which were Little Six tilts. The Jackets took a 22-14 halftime lead against Roanoke, but the Maroons knotted the count in the final minute of play, sending the battle into an overtime period. In the extra period, the R-M squad went ahead again, but Roa- noke came back again to tie the count at 49-49. The Jackets showed signs of tiring in the second overtime period and the Maroons went on to take a S9-54 triumph. With this encounter still fresh in the minds of everyone, Ran- dolph-Macon dropped another thrilling game to the Tigers from Death Valley two nights later. It was almost the same story again. The Jackets grabbed the lead early and held a six point advantage at halftime, but a final minute rally by the Tigers proved to be too much for the hapless Macon- ites and Hampden-Sydney won, 47-45. After scoring their first conference win at thc expense of Gallaudet, the Yellow Jackets returned home on the 21st of January, expecting to make a repeat performance over Medical College, but the Medicos surprised everyone fin- cluding themselvesj and won, 34-28. Following a wegk layoff forlniid-ferm exams, the R-M squad jumped back into M-D conference competition for four consecutive games, winning two and losing two. The Jackets defeated Towson College and Gallaudet. while bowing to strong teams from American University and Washington College. During the middle of February, the Maconites fell into their losing ways again, 'suffering four straight setbacks The R-M quintet then dropped an encounter to the strong Apprentice School five of Newport News, before chalking their third loop victory by defeating Bridgewater, 36-35, on a last minute foul shot. Mr. Hard Luck was with the Yellow Jackets again when they traveled to Death Valley for a return engagement with the Tigers. The Jackets were masters of the situation throughout most of the game and held the lead until the final three minutes. A desperate rally in that period gave Hampden-sydney a 5 2 to 47 verdict. Several nights, later, Randolph-Macon clinched a berth in the M-D conference tournament by edging out Bridgewater, 49-41. On the night of the 12th, the Richmond Spiders threw a strong first half attack at the Jackets and won easily, 60-46, and two nights later Lynchburg got revenge for an early season loss by nipping the Maconites quintet, 42-30. While out in the western part of the State the Jackets also dropped their second tiff to the Roanoke Maroons who came up with a strong second half rally. 1751- five times and the jackets had thrown quite a scare at the Richmond Hve. In the loop tourney, which was held in Washington the first week-end in March, the Jackets were eliminated fn the opening round by Johns Hopkins. Captain Roland Bodtke led the Yellow Jackets in the scoring department during the season with 216 points, while Bob Sprenger was runner-up with 182. mfr Emzmpian I 94 6 First Row: Tankersley, C. Baseball dreams that had been lingering under these oaks and maples for many years came true last spring when the diamond Wizardry of Taylor Sanford produced a Yellow Jacket nine which won the State 1946 baseball champion- ship. It was the first time the coveted crown has had its seat on the campus in the history of Randolph-Macon. After dropping the- first three games on their schedule, the fast stepping Yellow Jackets found the right bats and racked up eleven straight victories to take the State title. This string of wins included two smashing triumphs over the University of Richmond, one over Hampden-Sydney, and one over William 85 Mary. i Boasting no long and heavy hitters, the Lemon and Black squad relied on timely singles, a skillful hunting attack, 76 and superb base running to manufacture most of its tallies. The pitching staff, composed of Syd Thrift, Paul Isenberg, and B.ll Wright, gave the Maconites as good a defense as any ball club needed. Thrift-a lanky, southpaw freshman -had a season's record of six wins and no defeats and was chosen on the All-State team. In the hitting department, the Jackets pounded out 154 hits for 99 runs in their 14-game campaign to give a team batting average of .542. Don Flippin led the individual batting with a .520 average and was chosen as an out- fielder on the All-State squad. However, with all the good statistics and star players in mind, much credit is due to the catching genius of Taylor Sanford, a long-time star on Minor League diamonds. On December second, a call was issued for cal talent to join the first Yellow Jacket 'irnming team since 1942. In response, me twenty-five men reported to Point- -xter Memorial Pool to begin working in eparation for a nine meet schedule card hich was to open on January 17. Before the Christmas holiday, the water- en worked out each day by practicing rns and starts, swimming laps for wind pacity and developing their strokes. At the ose of the pre-holiday drills the swimming entor, Assstant Coach Bill Robertson an- ounced the divisions of his 25 proteges into ie seven positions of a team and then in- ructed them to devote the entire workout me to their respective positions. On January 17, the tankers make their 47 debut with a bang when they took first lace in every event and easily defeated their es from Roanoke College 53M-llfh in e local natatorium. , In the following week, however, the ckets found themselves on the short end a 39-27 score when they battled a irongcr and more experienced team from oyola College. In the locker room before is first loss of the season the tankers had ected Bob Karoly and Bob Chisholm to Wimming captain their team throughout the 1947 schedule. During the first three weeks in March the nators took -to the road for three successive meets in foreign waters. In the first, with William 86 Mary, Nor- folk Division, the tankers were once again defeated 42-33 in first collegiate meet held in the Indians' pool in two years. VPI's tankers with three years of exper- ience behind them found little difficulty in defeating a three-month-old Randolph- Macon team 44-22 in the second of the three trips. The Jackets managed to capture only two first places in the eight event card. Returning from VPI, the local sprinters stopped off at Roanoke to give the college a return match, and left with their second win of the season, this time S3-12, dropping only M point from their first victory. On February 28 and March lst, the Jackets traveled to Richmond to compete with the top nators of the field in the An- nual State Collegiate Swimming Meet held in the Richmond Central YMCA. Kenneth Holloway reached the finals in the diving event and Howard Levy in the breast'-stroke, however, Levy was the only one of the team to capture a single point, and Randolph- Firsl Row: Palmore, Atkins, Elliot, Smith, Marchetti, Iden, Wishncr. Returning to the local waters after three weeks of travel, the Jackets eked out a 39- 36 victory over William 86 Mary Extension in Norfolk to cop their third win of the season and even the score at 3 wins and 3 losses for their schedule of inter-collegiate nflcets. The local strokers closed the 1947 cam- paign with a trip to Newark, Delaware, for the Mason-Dixon conference swimming meet, The competition there was as keen as that in the state meet and the Jackets managed to take only seven points, which left them in fifth place. When the season ended, the majority of the strokers kept right on swimming and will be practicing until next September when workouts will begin once again for a team that is determined to win the State crown. With a year of practice under their belts, the Jacket tankers will steadily climb in the ranks of Virginia swimming competition, paced by such men as Howard Levy-who lost first place in only one meet this year- and Bob Chisholm-who captured more honors than any other starter.
