I-Iis one hundred and ninety pounds, backed by a. fighting spirit, aided the team considerably. One seldom finds a more versatile player than Jim XVhite, who happened to be the only wearer of the Lemon and Black to play every min- ute of every game. He played a steady game at Center and gained all- state honorable mention. Though small in stature, Doggie, by his persistent efforts, gained a reputation of being the team's hardest worker. His flank was seldom turned and his fleetness of foot enabled him to snatch many a pass for long gains. THE 1927 SEASON A fiery, dashing back is Matthews, who reavhed the peak of form against 1-lanipden-Sydney. Bill re- peatedly made brilliant line plunges but it was his sleeping end trick that won him fame throughout the state. RANDOLPH-MACON 275 BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE 0 The 1927 football season opened as scheduled on Uctober ISK with Bridgewater College facing the Yel- low Jackets in their first gridiron tilt of the season. The Eagles were defeated by a score of 27 to O with RANDOLPH-MACO Lynchburg College, the second opponent of VVelch's warriors, was met in the Hill City the fol- lowing Saturday. A blocked punt on which Sydnor of the Hornets scored, proved to be the downfall of the jackets. Grant added the extra point for all the N0 six freshmen in the game and Eve veterans on the team. Great offensive strength was shown in which Allman and lVIattheWs were prominent, while the defense proved practically immovable. 5 LYNCIIBURG 7 scoring of the afternoon. A belated rally by Ran- dolph-lllacon fell short when the timekeeper's whistle ,ended the contest. A muddy field was directly re- sponsible for the blocked punt and poor passing by both teams. HUGH FLIPPEN l'RED FRALEY WVith the final game at Annapolis, Red closed la successful grid career at Randolph-Macon. Dur- ing his four years he gave valuable service both in the line and the backfield. His absence will be sorely felt next season. Flip's excellent show- ing in the forward wall stamped him as an out- standing performer, At all times he was aggres- sive and his furious rush- ing tactics annoyed op- posing backs. I-Ie will be counted on strongly for next yea.r's team. RANDOLPH-MACON 65 A delightful 6 to O score was the reward Weleh's charges received by good playing against Hampden- Sydney in Petersburg. HAMPDEN-SYDNEY O line for the touchdown and victory. A brilliant de- fensive stand in which Witthrow figured prominently stayed off an onrush by the infuriated Tigers, made in the last few minutes. RANDOLPH-MACON 75 JUNITA 24 Faulty handling of the slippery ball in Hunting- don, Pennsylvania, cost Raiidolph-Macon Z1 24 to 7 defeat at the hands of Junita College. It was the largest score run up against the Lemon and Black during the entire season and over half the total score made by all Opponents. Although the Virginians tallied first on a pass from Bryant to Douthat, the locals lost out when the Northerners consistently worked the oval down the field to score. This big boy proved a terror in the line last year, filling all expecta- tions advaneed in ref- erence to his prep school rep. However. he soon came into his own and easily won a berth on the squad. Pinliie's fighting spirit, equalled only by a few, brightens our future pros- Arthur tool: his turn both at end and fullback, doing well in both posi- tions. Good tackling was one of his features and the ability to buck Fl line was marked. I-lis sweeping runs carried the ball within striking dis- tance in several en- counters. Wliite and Anthony played good ball and held the defense intact while the Middies attempted gains through the line. For the second successive game only eleven players were used by Coach Welch, indicating the excellent condition the men had rounded them- selves into. OUTLOOK FOR 1928 Witli the loss of only one man, Captain Anthony, in the line, the prospects for an experienced Wall are promising. Those returning will include Flippen and Douthat, fleet-footed flankmen, Tom Brown and Witthroyv, tackles, Trader and Compton, guards, and White at center. The backfield, too, loses only one player, Fraley. Bryant, Franklin and johnson will bear the brunt of the attack with- other promising backs ready for action. With only one letter man, Captain Shelfey, in the fold the Yellow jacket mentor was faced with the problem of moulding a quint to meet stiff collegiate opposition throughout the state. Soon, however, the nation's winter sport took a decided jump as freshmen and reserves from the 1927 five began to flash form on the hard- wood. Then, too, for the first time, the Yellow Jackets were playing in their new one hun- dred thousand gymnasium, thus insuring the team a spacious and well-lighted court to prac- tice and stage their games. After two weeks of practice, which were interrupted by Christ- mas. examinations and holidays, it could be seen that much was in store for the flashy five that was destined to wear the Lemon and Black. Eighteen college teams were met and seven independent teams were faced during the season. DELFORD SHEETS Sheets had little trouble in placing in the one mile run, his fastest time being 4-50. Delford was at his best against Hampden-Sydney at Death Valley and took the mile event from the Tigers handily. - CARLOS WRIGHT Although Wright was nosed out in several meets by a few feet, he always placed high in the pole vaulting events and will doubtless improve his style this season. i Page one hundred lfweniy-one ,, a -in li f1 ,lllX S f I fl 5 . WESLEY GREENE Captain Wesley distinguished himself through- out the state on many occasions by his ability to clear the bar in the high jump at five feet, eleven inches. This was his best mark and was made at the indoor track meet at the University of Virginia during his senior year. Greene entered the Penn Relay Meet and gave a good account of himself against championship competition. EARL BRITTON Captain Cross Country Team The speedy Britton could always be counted upon to earn his number of points in a meet and upon more than one occasion the sturdy distance man lapped his opponent and romped to victory. His loss will be keenly felt as the 1928 squad prepares for several meets soon. Page one hundred 1-wenzy-lfwo M.-f Q .,- LACROSSE SQIJAD, 1928 '55 .. :: HHLL o'mEl,g M. Vi :: .. .:: .:5 E: 'Ei ii! Al- though the sport is confined principally to Northern institutions where it is held in high favor, the game is gaining rapidly in the Southland and Will doubtless become a major sport soon in this section. Two lacrosse teams are now vieing for honors in the state at the University and at Raiidolph-Macoii. Two crushing victories have been scored over the Cavaliers with one tie and no defeats.
