It is our hope that the friendship that has been built during the years here will re- main as strong in the years to come as it is now. We also hope that you will treasure your copy of RANDOMAC 1958 because of its pic- torial and historical record of the school- year's activities. As wc, the Class of 1958, go to join the growing number of men who have gone out from RMA to take their places in colleges and universities, in business, in- dustry, aud professions, we take with us the cherished traditions of RMA that many of us have helped to bui-ld. It is our hope that RAN- DOMAC 1958 will help us to recall these tradi- tions with pride. As the years go- by, we shall receive increasing enjoyment from the use of this annual in recalling our prep school activi- ties and classmates' THE Enrrons ZLL of Confenfs agnfroclucfion . . we jacuhy . . we .ggniorzi . . we MflJel'Cfad4fe5 Q . .7116 Kaffahon . . 38 f7Le Jdfkdfza . . 52 . jig .fdcfiuified . . As Major E. V. Reg- ester completes the read- ing of the Christmas story and the ,Glee Club sings carols, the star is lit, be- ginning the Christmas season at Randolph- Macon. THE HONORABLE ELLIOTT D. MARSHALL. Ulm Glfflfthg A MESSAGE EHUM THE PHESIDE T jo Me 65145 o 7958 I appreciate the invitation to address a brief statement to the Class of 1958. I am glad to have the privilege of extending through the RANDOMAC congratulations and best wishes to each member of the class. Most of you have lived at R.-M.A. during one of the most interesting periods in the long history of the Acad- emy. You have observed and have had an important part in these years of growth and development. Not only has there been marked evidence of physical progress in build- ings and grounds, but these years have also witnessed increase in the size of the Corps and substantial progress in all phases of school life and activity. You have lived too, during these more recent years, through a period of unusual scientific and political changes in the world. You have had the opportunity to observe and to study amazing growth in nuclear develop- ments, missiles and space satellites. You have lived in an age of challenge and progress seldom experienced in the history of mankind. In all this period of astonishing events, there comes the suggestion and the temptation to discard the basic and fundamental in favor of the modern and untried con- cepts of living. It is my hope that you may take with you into this new world of scientific wonder and discovery, the age-old and well-tried principles of living-truth, honor, goodness. And may I leave with you too in this modern age the wise admonition that came centuries ago from the writer of Proverbs: Wisdom is the principal thingg therefore get wisdomg and with all thy getting get understanding. 'irif jk eniorfi As the Stars and Stripes come down for the last time at Randolph-Macon this June for the Senior Class, many of us will look back over our years here, and our throats will swell just a little. We shall look at our campus and com- pare our growth wi.th it. During the time that we have been at Randolph-Macon, the campus has grown in every way just as we have. The campus at the time when members of our class like Mullins and Phelps entered was quite different from the present campus that new members of our class like Shaw and Dean know. We feel that our growth here has been comparable to the growth of Randolph- Macon, and we are grateful to Randolph- Macon, to our teachers, and to our parents. The Class of 1958 has 67 members repre- senting nine states QOhio, Illinois, Pennsyl- vania, Maryland, New Jersey, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginiaj and the District of Columbia. Our class will represent Randolph-Macon at numerous colleges and universities throughout America, from Mary- land to Colorado. Over the years, as we have witnessed the growth of Randolph-Macon, we have become as much a part of R.-M.A. as it has become a part of us. We have built our foundations during these years on solid ground, and we have been prepared for a great new life ahead. We of the Senior Class of 1958 are proud of the ideals and traditions of Randolph-Macon. Throughout the years we shall grow in statue, in wisdom, and in prestige just as Randolph- Macon is growing. We are proud to become alumni of a great school. , Q 'J ln.-' la-six? 1 'v , 3 Lf' A I 1 A Ns. I ew If 1. 1 . -, 1 . .only . Q YQ.: - 4 .i 'JB' 1' I .' gf , X 1 .1 it is is .. X' Ak is 4 3 .H -ye. ,. WORNOM, JR. January 3, 1939-May 9, 1957 Sandy,7 Wornoin died on May 9, 1957, just eighteen years old. A cadet at R.-lVl.A. for two years, '6Sandy'7 might have been a senior in 1957, but had decided to take an additional year of prep school work to better prepare himself for college. He would have been a member of the Senior Class of 1958. A tall, strong, physically active young man, he was a cadet platoon sergeant, a varsity swimmer, and a member of the varsity football team. 4'Sandy77 was active in youth affairs at his church. both at his home in Warwick, Virginia, and in Front Royal. Everyone recognized him as a leader. His friendly, Cheerful disposition and hard-working energy strengthened his popularity. A Sandy Wornom Me- morial Fund has been established to choose a fitting memorial to this outstanding young man, whose loss has been greatly felt at Randolph-Macon. ,ive First Row: PHILLIP WAYNE BARNES ,......... .... .... The purpose of this pro- gram is to provide military training that will benefit the student and be of value to the Army if he should become a member of the Army. The participating schools and their students bear the costs of instruct- ors, uniforms, and general support of the program. The prescribed course of instruction comprises three years with 96 hours of instruction each aca- demic year. This program works out in general to two outside drills per week plus a weekly classroom session which includes such military subjects as lVlilitary Courtesy, Hygiene and First Aid, Weap- ons, lVlarksmanship, Mad Reading, and Achieve- ments and Traditions of the Army. The year is filled with inspections, competitions, and parades, cli- maxed by the annual Federal Inspection, which for three straight years has resulted in Honor School Rating, and the Commencement Ceremonies. lVlilitary Training Certificates are awarded to graduates who successfully complete the entire course. The Professor of lVlilitary Science and Tact- ics of a Senior fcollege leveli Reserve O'iicer Training Unit may give credit for one year of Sen- ior ROTC to students with this certihcate. Begin- ning this year, a committee of the faculty will award a Superior NDCC School Cadet ribbon and certifi- cate to the outstanding cadet in each of the three military classes. ji... galfafon BATTALION STAFF MAJOR JAMES D. Dean carried the ball across for RMA's first score. Later Dennis Marchi intercepted a Charlotte Hall pass and went ten yards for another touchdown. In the third quarter, Phil Sandifer intercepted the kick and car- ried the ball for the third score of the game. Randy Gregory made a fourth touchdown in the fourth quarter. Gregory passed to full- back Jim Kraus for the extra point, ST. JAMES Spring halfback Joe Pittard cut loose for a 17-yard run to make the first score of the game. Phil Sandifer scored twice during the game, and halfback Bobby Daniels added two more touchdowns. Quarterback Larry McCutcheon tallied once during the rout, with center Frank Duncum place-kicking the only extra point. FISHBURNE In the Homecoming Day game against Fishburne, the Jackets, taking the kick-off. marched 80 yards for the touchdown. The climax play came with a 45-yard toss by quarterback Randy Greg- ory to end Jim Burke which gave RMA a first down on the FMA 15. On the next play Joe Pittard went untouched through a gaping hole over right tackle for the only score of the game. WOODBERRY FOREST Woodberry Forestis Tigers ended RMA's 12-game winning streak which extended back to 1955. Johnny O'Bannon, the Tigers' vet- eran quarterback, staged a one-man show for the spectators in romping to three touchdowns and passing 45 yards to John Faul- coner for another. The Jacket scores came on marches of 80 and 85 yards, with Randy Gregory passing to Joe Pittard for 15 yards in the second period and Bobby Daniels bursting over tackle for 12 yards in the final quarter. EPISCOPAL HIGH SCHOOL Still suffering from a flu epidemic and hampered by injuries, the Jackets were no match for the Episcopal High Maroon varsity in the annual Football Day feature at Alexandria, in which the Jackets dropped a 38-0 rout. RMA yielded a touchdown in each of the first two periods, battling the Maroons on fairly even terms. In the third quarter Episcopal added 12 points and blasted all ,Jacket hopes with 14 more points in the final period. ST. CHRISTOPHER? At Richmond the Saints handed the Jackets their third consecu- tive loss in a 13-0 game which saw the Saint's Keith Pusey score all the points. VIRGINIA EPISCOPAL The Jackets spotted Virginia Episcopal a 7-point lead early in the first period and then fought back to a 7-7 deadlock in a hard fought contest that saw all the scoring confined to the opening quarter. RMA drove 80 yards following the second kick-off, the touchdown coming on a 20-yard pass from Randy Gregory to Bobby Daniels who romped Z7 yards down the right sideline to tally. Ed Smith then booted the PAT to knot the score. AUGUSTA A 55-yard touchdown run with only a minute left in the game gave Augusta a 26-18 victory over RMA. The Jackets scored first midway in the opening quarter on a snow-covered field. Halfback Bobby Daniels took a hand-off from Randy Gregory on the Jacket 19 and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. In the third quarter Au- gusta increased their lead 13-6. Two plays later on passes from Gregory to Joe Pittard and Phil Sandifer, the Jackets had tied the count. Ed Smith booted the PAT. Although the score was tied, again Augusta snatched the victory away from the Jackets with Sefa's 55-yard run in the final minute. 2 ' 4 N , N .4 .f - Y I , ' 4 If V ' .V , K ,. . Markham, Pastore, Portnoy, Richards, Spruill, and Up- ham, the eight returning varsity men from 1957, com- prised a solid basis for the 1958 squad. New men who helped to give the team more depth were Alston, Berry, Burgess, Duvall, Deihl, R, Johnson, H. Markham, Mar- den, Sharp, and Stephenson. This season was by no means a slow one, and every match proved a Hthrillern right up until the last target had been scored. Since many excellent teams were developed in the state this year, the pressure was on in every match, but thanks to the astute coaching of Captain Mills and the watchful eye of Capt. Cooper the team withstood the pressure and stuck together to emerge victoriously from one of its roughest seasons with the remarkable record of 6 wins and 2 losses in shoulder- to-shoulder competition. The team also won its one Dostal match against Admiral Farragut Academy of St. Peters- burg, Florida. In trophy and medal matches, the Yellowjackets took top honors. The team took first place for the second straight year in the Second Army Match. It also took first and third places in the HEARST TROPHY MATCH in the Second Army Area. At this time the results of two trophy matches have not yet been received. These are the N.D.C.C. Match in which RMA fired a better score than the score that won them third place last year, and the Nationals Match in which RMA scored 27 points higher than the score that won them first place in the Second Army Match. as g Stanton RMA ......... 1958 MATCH RESULTS Shoulder-To-Shoulder Matches lPr .1314g Potomac State College . .1221 actice Match J RMA ..... .... 1 383g Massanutten .. ..... 13413 RMA ..... .... 1 387g Augusta ...... ..... 1 349 RMA ..... .... 1 366g Fishburne ............ 1375 RMA ..... .... 1 3753 George Washington High 1227 RMA ..... .... 1 3303 Augusta ........ They are wrong . . . dead wrong. In spite of the amazing advances we have made in technology and invention, America's opportunities are still multiplying. Look around you! Americans are never satisfied - they will always want more. Somewhere in the class of 1958 there may well be the student who will some day solve the horror of cancer, or design a brand new kind of atomic engine, or discover the secret of life itself. Equally important, there are expanding opportunities for this generation in all types of employment. The opportunities . . . and their rewards . . . will go to the graduates who are willing to meet the challenges of a dynamic, expanding America.
