' -1 Massanutten beat the Cadets. 43-3I 1 then Woodherry set them clown, 43-26: and lilpiscopal High pulled ahead in the closing minutes for a 45-3l win. Massanutten tcoli its second win, 27-23: Fishburne captured the decision in a free-scoring 65-48 battle: and Vhoodoerry outclassed the jackets. 60-23. In four games away from home, the jackets then howcd to Fishhurne again, 47-29: to Staunton for the second time, 56-Zl: to Handley, 3l-l4: and to Augusta, 46-4l. The Final game. against St. James School of Hagerstown, lVlaryl'nd, lnrought the Jackets one last victory, 40-25. And so the season closed. APPLEBY Sponsor 4251 THE 1946 VARSITY SVVIMMING TEAM MANAGER FLORO MANAGER TlNKER COACH BURNS meet, entered and placed seventh in the IOO-yard back- strolce. These three also represented the Academy in the medley relay. ln dual meet competition in Virginia. the jacket swimmers won hve and lost only two, both to the Staunton squad, which won the State title. A sixth dual meet victory was forestalled when Fishburne cancelled their second meeting after bowing to the Cadets hy a top-heavy score. R.-M. A. defeated Fishburne in the opening meet. 43-23. scoring Firsts in five of the eight events, and then dropped the second meet to Staunton, 42-24. Massanulten then bowed twice to the jackets by scores of 55-ll and 58-7, as the Cadets swept every first in both meets. ln a second meeting with S. M. A., The -Iaclcets again lost, by a 43-23 margin, and then in the State meet piled up 29 points for second place, as Fishburne and Augusta trailed. The last two dual meets, both with A. M. A., were victories for R.-M. A. by scores of 53-l3 and 40-26. lndividual star of the season was Tom Appleby, who 'not only won the State crown and was undefeated through the entire schedule but also lowered his own record in the breast slrolce event to l :l0.9. Bruce Campbell in the 50-yard free-style. Billy Campbell in the l00-yard free-style. Bill Banta in the lO0-ya.-d backstrolce. jim Breen in the 220-yard free- style and Tex Purdy and Denny Morgan in diving were other consistent winners. Alan Wilson, Tom Noble. Dick Roy and john Burnham also scored points for the Cadets. Prior to this season, the jacket swimmers had never placed better than third in State competition. although last year they rated sixth at the Nationals. RESUME OF THE SEASON Randolph-Macon Academyis varsity swimming team, winners of the second-place trophy in the State swimming meet at Staunton. climaxed one of its most successful seasons by sending three representatives to the National lnterscholastic Championship Meet at Trenton, New jersey. Tom Appleby, who was undefeated this year in the State, entered the HD-yard breast strolce and placed third in this event. Bruce Campbell entered and placed sixth in the 50-yard free-style.
