In doing so I wish to express for myself personally and for our entire Randolph-Macon family appreciation of the splendid spirit of cooperation and loyalty that has characterized your life here in every phase of school activity. Yours is in a very real sense the War Class. For most of the members of your Class almost every experience at Randolph-Macon has been dated and influenced by the War. But in spite of unusual conditions 3-of necessity a part of this world-wide struggle, you have been able to maintain a spirit of calm determination that has made your days and years at Randolph-Macon count for the most in your own and in the Academy's development and progress. And you have in this way better prepared yourselves for the sacrifices and service for your Country that will so soon be expected and required of each of you. We, who continue to carry on here, salute the members of the Class of I944, knowing full well that just as you have measured up to your obliga- tions here you will continue to give your best to the Service of your Nation and of the World, in order that those principles of freedom and justice so dear to the hearts of all true Americans, may be preserved for your own generation and for generations yet unborn. Q fx f,,f-3-lllllal at 'Hwy PASSING REVIEW Fifty-second session of Ran- dolph-Macon Academy! Old cadets met old cadets, and greeted new cadets. Classes be- gan, companies were formed: athletic call was answered: and a full year for the cadets was be- gun. Colonel Petty, the new P. M. S. and T., was intro- duced and we quickly found him to be a real soldier, gentle- man, and friend. A real Army man was ours, and with him as our guide we settled down quick- ly for military preparedness. Soon the hut, two, three, four of temporary oflicers and non- commissioned officers could be heard on the roadway, south field and in the woods while the band learned to play stirring marches. Opening dance saw dashing soldierly boys sway with their dates to the last appearance of the orchestra of an alumnus, jimmy Doman. Football season, and what a victory it was! General Order, number l! Silence held the entire corps as the names of ofhcers and non-commis- sioned officers for the year were announced. Thanksgiving dinner there was on the Hill and what an abund- ance. Many new ofhcers felt, for the first time, the pinch of their new Sam Brownes. Snow-clear weather -more snow-the long walk to town became a glazed hill, overhung with silvery branches. Spick and span cadets in all uniforms posed for pictures just before the Armistice Day parade. The Senior Class was host to the corps at a special dance. Busy days in class, on the drill field, and in athletic contests. Christmas leave was announced, busses appeared, and we were off for Washington and home. Back to the Hill with stories of holiday fun. Exam dates posted! Intense concentration for review week. Our first big military exam. Tests for the Air Corps, V tests for the Army and Navy programs quickly followed. We lost four cadets at mid-year to our Uncle Sam's corps. A warm spell right in the middle of our winter. This was quickly followed by more snow-more coasting, and even some skiing. The flu hit us but we were strong and soon the infirmary was cleared. Basketball games and swimming meets filled our late afternoons while classes and drills took our mornings and early afternoons. Close order and extended order, calis- thentics were the orders of the day. Valentine's Day found the Juniors entertaining the corps at a dance. The Yellow Jacket Orchestra, our own orchestra, made its Hrst appearance. New and astounding records were being set each day by the members of our active rifle team. R.-M. A. played host and revived the Virginia Prep School Swimming Meet. Baseball and track were hampered by cold rainy days but finally the sunny early spring came to the Hill and those two teams and the tennis team did credit to the Jackets' reputation. The Annual Y. M. C. A. dance was our next treat. Spring really flourished in the gym. Company C won the squad competition but all three squads enjoyed the candy they won. The Junior Class had an outdoor supper, and fifty cadets could eat no more! Field Day found perfect weather and many ribbons were in evidence as C Company again took the day. White goods! Measured, altered, starched. We practiced for our famed Sunday Dress Parades. Hot weather hit the Hill-flowers bloomed in many colored profusion as we studied for final exams, trying to throw off Spring Fever and In the Spring a young man's fancy . . . Drill team formed after Mess III every evening and they drilled for per- fect mastery for the coming Commencement Exercises. Companies worked hard for the coming compet- itive drill. Another week of review and anxious eyes skanned mimeographed exam sheets. Competitive Drill! Manual of Arms champion! Baccalaureate Sunday! Senior Luncheon! Band Concert! Last Dress Parade! Colors presented to Company B. Graduation! The flag was lowered as cadets with tear- stained but happy faces saw Colonel Boggs hand Austin the flag, thus bringing to a close that grand ole year of '43-'44! RIDDICK RESUME Once again as the green turned to gold, a host of hopeful gridiron heroes dug their cleats into the hard turf and were set through thiir paces under the watchful eyes of Major Riddick and Captain Fouts. Although few of the returning gridders were lettermen, the gods of football smiled favorably upon them and also upon those who were wearing the Jacket uniform for the first time. Out of this inexperienced squad came three players: Joe Glenn, Jack Mead, and Bill Marsh, who were recognized for their exceptional football ability when the All-State Prep School Football team was selected. These boys led the .Iaclcets through their best season ever. This team from Randolph-Macon was to go down in football annals as first in the nation for military schools, and tied for first place in the State. How did it happen? Heres how. Once again Mead received the hall and dropped one into Marsh's arms. He was there and waiting for it on the goal side of the goal line. Cofall received a reverse on the next play, charged his held and touched the hall down on the stripe. Carruth, with a record of six wins against three losses. Prior to the final military league game, in which the Cadets bowed to Staunton, 33-30, the Jackets were in a position to tie for the State military title. With a I4-man squad, Captain Carruth organized a combination that clicked all season. Beginning with a nucleus of three lettermen from last year's team, Captain Carruth joined the new with the old to turn out a successful jacket five. Veterans Johnny Shaffer, jimmy Austin and Captain Sydney Thompson sup- plied the foundation for the varsity quint, while Dick Sommerfeld, a freshman, and Bill Naylor, a junior, completed the starting five. In the scoring column, eight members of the Cadet squad chalked up a total of 253 points. Top scorer of the season was Sid Thompson, who later won an honorable mention on the all-State team at forward. Thompson racked up sixty-five points. Close behind him in second and third spots were Bill Naylor and Johnny Shaffer, with sixty-one and fifty-eight points, respectively. Other members of the squad who saw action during the season were Glenn Overton, Rennie Cory, Edwin Allen, Bill Marsh, Tom Hessler, Charles Macatee, Charles Lee, Bill Bradley, and Bryan Mitchell. The Jackets opened their season with a 22-I 6 win over Winchester's Handley High, but bowed in the second game, losing to Woodberry, 24-I 7. The Cadets came back in the third game to whip Fishburne, 29-17, and continued their winning streak with a 37-28 triumph over Episcopal High and a revenge victory over Woodberry, 27-25. Trailing all the way in the Woodberry game, the Jackets came from behind at the last minute on baskets by Sommerfeld and Shaffer. Staunton then scored its first win over the Cadets, 42-22, after a I4-I2 first half. Once more R.-M. A. came through at the last minute, nipping Fishburne, 34-33, for their second win over the Waynesboro team, and then with a tie for the State championship within their grasp the Jackets were nosed out by S. M. A. in the season's next-to-the-last game. Had the Jackets won that contest they would have been tied with S. M. A. for the title. In the last game of the season, the Jackets were held by Handley in a sluggish first half but turned on the pressure after the intermission to win a 35-I9 score.
