The staff of R.H.S. has directed the course for the students in different areas like the administration handling the finanical budget and supervising the curriculum. Students do the best job possible in the classes they have chosen with the help of the staff. Keeping the school clean, neat and tidy is the work of the custodians and the cooks plan nutritious meals. Paperwork is done by the secretary. A big thanks goes to the staff from the yearbook staff. The Randolph High School held its Homecoming on September 9, 1987 at the Randolph City Auditorium. John Keifer and Gina Gubbels were crowned king and queen after the football team won 34 to 14 over Creighton. Music was provided by Cassette Convention, and In Our Dreams from R.E.O. Speedwagon was the theme. Spirit Week started off with the students dressing Inside Out on Monday. Tuesday was Hat, Tie, Glasses Day. Wednesday was Punk Rock and Nerd Day. Thursday was Initiation with the boys dressing as Fairies and the girls as Trolls. Dale Morrison and Staci Reineke were the winners of initiation. The 1988 Junior-Senior Prom was held April 30 in the Randolph High School gym. The evening began with the banquet at 6:30 p.m. The juniors purchased glass wine glasses and memory books for the meal. Entertainment at the banquet was provided by the Asylum”, consisting of Judd Claussen, Tyler Osborn, and John Keifer. Mr. Alpers stayed busy keeping the band in order. He has been band instructor here for the past four years. His plans for next year are to attend the University of South Dakota to earn his Masters Degree. The Randolph Instrumental Music Department had a very busy and successful year. The Cardinal Marching Band performed at halftime during football games, and marched in the La Vitsef Parade in Norfolk and the Harvest of Harmony Parade in Grand Island. The Randolph Pep Band had performed at twenty - two athletic events including NENAC. Districts, and Boys State Basketball Tournaments. The Symphonic Band has made many appearances including Veterans Day. Chrismas Concert. Music In Our Schools Month Concert, Spring Concert. and Graduation. This year the Symphonic Band received a Superior rating at District III Music Contest. This was the first superior that the band has earned since 1983. Sandi Kollars again was accepted into the MENC Clinic All - State Honor Band. Tyler Osborn was accepted to the Platte Campus Honor Band Festival, Tyler Osborn, Missy Coenen. and Pam Gubbels were accepted to the Kearney State Honor Band Festival, and Sandi Kollars, Tyler Osborn, Missy Coenen, Pam Gubbels, Michelle Coenen. and Holly Heegle were accepted to the Wayne State Honor Band Festival. The trio was awarded a superior and the triple trio was awarded an excellent rating. The mixed chorus, girls glee, and swing choir all received excellent ratings. FHA had a busy schedule this year. On November 4 they attended the District Convention held in Emerson. Nebraska. Sally Burmester ran for District Officer and was elected. Missy Coenen was elected to be on the Families and Future PEP Squad Team. PEP Squad is a group in which Peers are Educating Peers. In January the following medals were given for SEARCH participants. Missy Coenen -Top Gold for Family Living and Parenting. Stephanie Brunssen - Gold for Food Nutrition, and Sally Burmester - Top Gold for Illustrated Talk. Missy and Sally both qualified to compete at the state level they received a silver and bronze. Candy sales and raffles were sponsored to raise money to help pay for the state qualifiers to attend the conference in Lincoln. They also had their Second Annual Talent Show in which many participated. The new officers are President - Stephanie Brunssen, Vice President - Sally Burmester. The Chapter received the area BOAC Award for building our community. They also received a bronze Superior Chapter Award, a bronze Chapter Safety Award, and a Certificate of Merit in Natural Resources. Despite the early losses they came back with four straight wins. The volleyball girls have nothing to be ashamed of because they had a fine season, especially their big win over Pierce and really gave Hartington Cedar Catholic a run for their money. Gina Gubbels and Amy Alderson were cited for being most valuable players. The most inspirational player was Marcy Reineke and the hustler award was given to Amy Alderson. The Cardinals ended their season with an impressive record of 19-3. Their three losses came to Crofton. Hartington Cedar Catholic, and Homer, which they also have had victories over this season. The Cardinals were led by nine seniors and with terrific talent coming from the bench also. The Cardinals were a powerful scoring machine that outscored Enierson-Hubbard. Ponca, and Plainview in the District finals to earn them a ticket to Lincoln. The Cardinals were the fourth seed in the State Tournament which took place on March 10-12. They faced the Homer Knights in first round action on March 10 in Pershing Auditorium at 5:00 in the evening, and were edged by the Knights by a score of 49-48. They were coached by Head Coach - Mr. Lyle Nannen. Assistant Coaches - Mr. Mark Anderson and Mr. Scott Norvell. Congratulations on a wonderful season. The boys varsity track team finished third in the NENAC Track Meet and third in the District Track Meet. The following Cardinals were State Qualifiers: Jeff Lackas - high hurdles (best time was 15.8), Jim Scott - 110 meter high hurdles (best time was 16.0) and 300 intermediate hurdles (best time was 41.9). The 1600 meter relay team, including Jason Speer, Glen Morrison, James Hilkemann, and Jim Scott, also qualified for state. The relay team’s best time was 3:32.4. Jeff Lackas (4 year letterman), and Chuck Gubbels (3 year letterman), have participated in track all four years of high school. Beci’s looooong jump The Randolph Girls Track Team had a tough year mainly due to inexperience and lack of depth. The team consisted of four freshmen, four sophomores and one junior. A few bright spots this year were Angie Bloomquist’s performance in the sprints, Beci Baden in the long jump and Gina Keifer in the high jump. BOYS TRACK - The highlights of the season for the boys track included winning their only dual meet of the year over Laurel and placing 7th out of 14 schools in the Osmond Invitational. Thiry-one of these beginning kindergarteners were still present for our senior year. Our grade school years were filled with the memories of making pioneer houses and field trips to Norfolk and Yankton. We entered junior high with anticipation, eager to experience the curriculum and social life that awaited us. During our junior high years tragedy struck our class when we lost our classmate. Sally Kluver. At the graduation ceremony, a white rose was placed beside our diplomas in memory of Sally. Forty-four students began their freshman year in the fall of 1934. Our elected class officers were John Keifer President. Amy Alderson - Vice President. Staci Nordhues • Secretary. Jeremy Kil-burn - Treasurer, and Mike Riedmiller and Angie Speer served on the Student Council. Our sponsors throughout our high school years were Mrs. Dorothy Jensen and Mr. Marvin Beardshear. Freshman initiation came during Homecoming week in which the boys dressed as Boy George, and the girls dressed as Michael Jackson. Gina Gubbels. Jackie Olberding. Reggie Arduser. and Robert Burgel won best costume for the event. Homecoming at tendants were Amy Alderson and John Keifer. Staci Nordhues and John Keifer were chosen to represent our class as Sweetheart attendants. Sandra Kollars and Tyler Osborn received superiors at District Music Contest for their instrumental solos. Tyler Osborn also received a superior on his vocal solo. Our sophomore year began with the election of officers. They were Greg Hay - President. Gina Gubbels - Vice President. Angie Speer - Secretary. Valerie McDonald - Treasurer, and elected as Student Council Representatives were Marcy Reineke and John Keifer. Our biggest event was choosing our class rings. Gina Gubbels and Jeffrey Lackas were chosen as Homecoming attendants. and Sweetheart attendants were Valerie McDonald and Brent Goetsch. The National Honor Society Inductees were Judd Claussen. Troy Taylor. Jeremy Kilburn. Sherilyn Haselhorst. Staci Nordhues. Marci Thelen. Sandra Kollars. Amy Alderson. and Angie Speer. Waiters and waitresses for Prom were Jeffrey Lackas. John Keifer. Amy Alderson - Treasurer, and John Keifer and Staci Nordhues - Student Council Representatives. Homecoming attendants were Jeffrey Hanna and Angie Speer. Raising money for prom was our class priority. As a class we sold magazines, and Gina Gubbels was named top salesperson. In football. Jeffrey Hanna and Chuck Gubbels received All Conference Honors, and Jeffrey Lackas received Hon orable Mention. Reggie Arduser received All Conference in basketball. and Chuck Gubbels received Honorable Mention. Marci Thelen and Donavan Nordhues were chosen as Sweetheart attendants. Mike Riedmiller. John Keifer. and Melissa Coenen were inducted into the National Honor Society. Robert Burgel was awarded with best supporting actor at NENAC One Act Play Contest for his performance in the play. Don't Drink the Water. We chose A Night on the Town” as the theme of the Junior - Senior Prom. 0 The queen candidates were Staci Nordhues. Angie Speer. Gina Gubbels. and Amy Alderson. Staci Nordhues was chosen as our Prom Queen. Robert Burgel and Tyler Osborn received super iors for vocal solos, while Sandra Kollars and Tyler Osborn received superiors for instrumental solos. Amy Alderson received a superior for her flute duet. In track. Jeffrey Lackas qualified for state in the 110 meter high hurdles. Valerie McDonald was chosen as Girls State Representative, with Staci Nordhues being chosen as alternate. John Keifer was chosen as representative at Boys State. Jeremy Kilburn and Amy Alderson served as the ushers for the 1987 Graduation Ceremony. In the fall of 1987. we entered school for our last year. Two new members were welcomed to our senior class. They are Ann Jakobsen. our foreign exchange student from Denmark, who spent the year with the Jim Riedel family, and Dave Monson. Officers chosen for our senior year were John Keifer - President. Jeffrey Lackas - Vice President. Mike Riedmiller - Secretary Trea-surer. and Troy Taylor and Angie Speer - Student Council Representatives. During Homecoming week we initiated the freshmen. The boys dressed as fairies, and the girls dressed as trolls. The queen candidates for Homecoming were Gina Gubbels. Angie Speer. Amy Alderson. and Valerie McDonald. King candidates were John Keifer. Jeffrey Lackas. Jeffrey Hanna, and Dean Spader. Gina Gubbels and John Keifer were crowned king and queen. In volleyball. Amy Alderson received All Conference, with Gina Gubbels and Marcy Reineke receiving Honorable Mention. Chuck Gubbels. Jeff Bermel. and Jeffrey Hanna received All Conference, and Jeffrey Lackas and John Keifer received Honorable Mention in football. FHA-FFA Sweetheart candidates were Valerie McDonald. Marcy Reineke. Angie Speer. Marci Thelen, Brent Goetsch, Stan Polenske, Tony Van Slyke. and Donavan Nordhues. Angie Speer and Donavan Nordhues were crowned king and queen. Inducted into the National Honor Society were Greg Hay. Robert Burgel. and Gina Gubbels. The boys basketball team participated in the state tournament this year. In basketball. Reggie Arduser and Chuck Gubbels received All Conference, while Dean Spader and Jeffrey Hanna received Honorable Mention. Amy Alderson and Sherilyn Haselhorst received All Conference in girls basketball. with Sandra Kollars receiving Honorable Mention. In April the juniors presented us with the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme was Magic is the Night. King candidates were Jeffrey Hanna. Jeffrey Lackas. Dean Spader, and Greg Hay. Dean Spader was crowned king. At District Music Contest. Sandra Kollars. Tyler Osborn. and Melissa Coenen received superiors for their instrumental solos. Tyler Osborn also received a superior for his vocal solo, and Sandra Kollars received a superior with the trio. In the play. The Odd Couple.” Sandra Kollars was chosen as best supporting actress, and Jeremy Kilburn was chosen as best actor. Tyler Osborn received the National Choral Award for chorus and the Arion Award in band. Sandra Kollars received the John Philip Sousa Award. In track Jeffrey Lackas qualified for the state meet in the 110 meter high hurdles. Our commencement exercise was held on May 15. We chose red and silver as our class colors and a red rose as our flower.
