S DM§CC V S SPCETS The Randolph High Cardettes claimed the NENAC Tournament championship on Tuesday night as they bested Pierce in the semi-finals before sidelining Croighton in the finals to win the championship. In the opening round of the tournament on Monday night, October 27, the locals had a sluggish start against Bloomfield but won 15-7, 10-15 and 15-6. In the semi-finals a tremendous come-back highlighted the locals win. In the first set against Pierce the Cardettes lost 16-14 and were down 12-9 in the second set, before coming back to win 15-12 and in the third set trailed again, this time 14-4, before the dramatic and almost unbelievable comeback again to win 16-14. In the opening round against Bloomfield Coach Joe Groen noted that a lack of intensity was evident as they struggled early in the match, but played well toward the end. In the serving area Patti Milander was 13-15 for 10 points and two ace spikes while Gina Gubbels was 11-12 with eight points and three ace spikes. Ann Nannen chipped in with 9-11 with six points and three aces. The leading setters in the Monday night match were Amy Alderson with 17-17 while Becky Lackas was 19- 21 and Gina Gubbels was 20- 22. The two leading spikers were Marci Moser with 22-27 with 11 aces and Lisa Kint with 14-18 with seven aces. Coach Groen credited Gina Gubbels, Marcy Reineke, Patti Milander, Brenda Meyer and Michelle May with coming in and playing well in a reserve roll. Cards Close Season by Blasting Ponca 20-0 The Randolph High Cards closed the 1986 football season on a winning note as they blasted Ponca by a score of 26-0 on Friday night in a game played at Ponca. The Cards end the season with a record of four wins and five losses. Seniors playing the last game for the RHS football Cardinals include Kelly Thelen, Doyle Brunssen, Rick Nordhues, Bob Buell, Brian Berner, John Andrew, John Walz and David Krueger. The Cards settled the outcome in a hurry on Friday night as they scored the first time they got their hands on the ball when lightning struck as Doyle Brunssen hit Jeff Lackas with a 50 yard scoring strike. Bob Buell made it 8-0 on the conversion when he went into the end-zone. The gremlins appeared to be working for the Cards on the ensuing kick-off when a not-so-good boot rolled down field that the Cards James Hilkemann recovered on the 35 yard line after some mass confusion on the Ponca teams part. Brunssen found Lackas for pay-dirt again from 18 yards out to make it 14-0 with the first quarter ending. The Cards scored twice more in the second period when Brunssen found James Hilkemann from 15 yards out and Jeff Hanna bulled his way into the end-zone from two yards away. Coach Nannen singled out Kelly Thelen and Doyle Brunssen on offense as having outstanding games and credited Rick Nordhues, Jeff Bermel, Jim Scott, Jeff Lackas and Jeff Hanna with good defensive efforts. The Cards rolled up 331 yards offensively in the contest as they rushed for 242 yards and threw for 89 more. Ponca had 177 yards on the ground and 43 via the airways. Lady Cardinals Appear Tough Looking at the Randolph High School Lady Cardinals on paper would seem to indicate that they will probably pick up again this year with the long winning tradition that has existed for the past several years. Matt Kruse, the Lady Cardinals head coach, appears to have a solid crew of front line players, with exceptional reserves waiting to help when the opportunity arises. The Lady Cardinals return a total of nine varsity letter winners from last year's team that reached the semi-finals of the state tournament. Returning letter winners include: Seniors - Kristie Borst, Becky Lackas, Ann Nannen. Marci Moser, Jackie Braden and Lisa Kint; Juniors - Sherilyn Hasel-horst, Amy Alderson and Sandi Kollars. 49 CARDINALS DISCOVER VARSITY-Front Row: Rocky Jensen, Jason Speer, Mike Spader, Brad Sauser, Darin McFadden, Cody Muff, Bradley Berner, Brian McDonald.
