On March 1,1986, four students, Shari Dibbert, Bonnie Fish, Jackie Borst, and Patti McCarthy, participated in the NEN-AC Speech Contest at Neligh. Shari gave an oral interpertation of poerty on “Love and Happiness” and an informative speech on Domestic Violence. She received two excellents; she also gave an extemporaneous speech on the U.N. and received an excellent. Patti gave an oral interpertation of poetry on the theme “Inspiration and Self-Identity” and received an excellent. Patti also gave an extemporaneous speech on Toxic Waste and received a Superior. On March 18, 1986, the speech team was to travel to Hartington for the District Contest but was unable to attend due to weather conditions. On January 18, 1986, the Randolph High School hosted the District One-Act Play Contest. The RHS speech class performed “Reunion on Gallows Hill”and received an excellent. This year’s Art classes have received many awards and ribbons. The teacher for both Art classes is Mrs. Chris Hansen. The Art II class organized the four mini fairs that were held throughout the school year. Blue ribbon awards were presented to Jim Rath, Tyler Osborn, Jodi Scott, and John Keifer. Receiving red ribbons were Jackie Olberding (2), Jodi Scott, Kristie McDonald, Jim Rath, and John Keifer. White ribbons received were Lisa Kint (2), Jim Scott, Jodi Scott, Margaret Reimers, and Tyler Osborn. Jodi Scott and Jim Rath were presented a medal and certificate for outstanding achievement in Art II. FHA started out their 1985-86 school year by attending District Convention in Allen, Nebraska in November. Patti Milander and Christy Carpenter both ran for state officer candidates, Patti was elected. In January, the following awards were given for SEARCH participants on their presentations: Missy Coenen-silver, Kelly Gerkins-silver, Christy Carpenter-silver, and Patti Milander-silver. Both the senior and junior divisions of the parlilmentary procee-dure teams received top golds and were given the chance to go to state to compete. Throughout the year, extra activities took place to raise money to help these people and the new officers, who were chosen in March, pay for their trip to Lincoln. But, because of the weather conditions, they were unable to attend the State Convention. The following people were chosen as officers for the 1986-87 school year: Presi-dent-Patti Milander, Vice President-Staci Nordhues, Secretary-Treasurer-Val McDonald, Parlimentarian-Patti McCarthy, Historian-Christy Carpenter, and Reporter-Marcy Reineke. Another main project worked on throughout the year was the block mother project. The music contest, held at Wayne State College, earned two chorus members Superiors for their solos. They were Tyler Osborn and Brian Backer. Receiving a two rating for their solos were as follows: Patti McCarthy, Jamie Redinbaugh, Robbie Burgel, and Judd Claussen. Mal-inda Goldman received a three rating for her solo. The Mixed Chorus and Swing Choir received a two rating. The music banquet was held Sunday, May 4, 1986 at the West School Gym. Brian Backer received the Choral Award which is given to the most outstanding choir member. Congratulations, Brian! They also performed in the Harvest of Harmony Parade in Grand Island. The pep band played at twenty-three athletic events including NENAC, Districts, and State Tournaments. Julie Carstens, Becky Lackas, Chuck Gubbels, Michelle Coenen, Melissa Coe-nen, Jamie Redinbaugh, Troy Taylor, Tyl- er Osborn, Sandi Kollars, Mike Riedmil ler, and Tige Jones took part in the Wayne State Honor Band Festival. Julie Carstens was selected as a member of the MENC Clinic All-State Honor Band. The Symphonic Band made many appearances this year including: Veteran’s Day, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, All-School Band Concert, Graduation, and Memorial Day. Finally, the marching band performed at the Centennial Parade. Five senior wrestlers earned the honor of wrestling at the state tournament. John Gubbels was crowned state champion in the 138 lb. class, while in the 132 lb. class, Mark Bloomquist finished 6th. The team as a whole placed 20th out of 50 teams in Class C. While living in Randolph, she attended R.H.S. and lived at the Joe Nordhues residence. She participated in volleyball, drama club, and student council. School life for Veronique was quite different. First, courses such as adult living, accounting, office machines, computer literacy and study hall were not offered in her home country. Secondly, they didn’t attend classes on Wednesday afternoons; this time was set aside for different organizational meetings. The schools good fortune continued as both girls and boys basketball teams qualified for State, Mark Bloomquist also qualified fur State Westling again this year. In basketball Kirby Meyer received All-Conference and Jodi Scott Honorable Mention. The wrestlers sent five members to state, John Gubbels, who was the State Champion in his weight class. Mark Bloomquist. who got fifth, Steve Loberg. Mike Schmit, and Loren Isom. In April the juniors presented us with the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme was That's What Friends Are For. Loren Isom was crowned King with the other candidates being Kirby Meyer. Paul Koehler, and Darcy Spoor. Kirby Meyer broke the school record in the hurdles. At music contest Brian Backer received a Superior for his vocal solo, Kerry Robinson and Jackie Borst an Excellent for their duel, and lulie Carstens a Superior for her flute solo. Brian Backer received the Outstanding Vocal Achievement Award and Julie Carstens received the John Philip Sousa Award.
