The Randolph High School Choir started off the 1983-1984 year with the All State Music Convention, which was held November 17-19, at Kearney. Donny Tunink represented Randolph as a bass vocalist. On January 5th, of 1984, the Vocal and Instrumental Winter Concert was held. Mrs. Rodgers accompanied them with the piano. It was originally set for December 20 but was cancelled on account of the snowstorm. Also in January, on the 17th, there was a Swing Choir Concert. Stanton and Randolph performed here in Randolph. On March 2nd, the choir performed a musical called “Teen”. Mr. Bradley and Dave Carstens accompanied Mrs. List. Brian Backer, Cindy Berner, and Ann Nannen participated in the musical by singing solos. A NENAC Vocal Clinic was held on March 20, in Randolph. Cheri Helmer, a former teacher at Randolph, came from Seward to direct the Choir, Boys Glee, and Swing Choir. The Swing Choir Festival was held in Norfolk on the 23rd of March. Contests were held April 27th and 28th in Wayne. Malinda Goldman, Brian Backer and Donny Tunink were the soloist that participated. Brian Backer received a Superior. Cheri Stevens and Donny Tunink performed a duet also. Dave Korth received the Outstanding Choral Award. The Swing Choir, Boys Glee, and Choir all performed at contest and did an excellent job. For graduation, on May 20th, the Senior members of Choir and the entire Swing Choir performed to Don’t Stop Believing” and “So many Bright Tomorrows”. What a nice way to end the Seniors’ years at RHS. 10 Brian Backer received a Superior at contest.

full house of talent The Randolph High Band displayed a full house of talent during the 1983-1984 school year, under the direction of Mr. Jay Marcum. Mr. Marcum began his first year at RHS by preparing the pre-game and half-time shows for the Marching Band. The Marching Band practiced many cool mornings in preparation for the four shows they performed. Cindy Berner was the drum Majorette and Caryl Preston and Becky Lackas were Baton Twirlers for the Marching Band. Some of the students in Marching Band were also involved in the Pep Band for volleyball which consisted of volunteer members from both the Junior High and Senior High schools. The Pep Band was present at the Girls District and Regional games as well as the State Tournaments in Lincoln. The High School Band presented a concert on November 3. They performed eight of the songs from their Marching Band selections. Shortly after the fall, Pep Band season was over, the Winter Concert Band and the Basketball Pep Bands were organized. The Concert Band worked very hard in preparation for the Winter Band Concert that was held on January 6. The band performed six selections at this concert. The Basketball Pep Band began its season by playing at the first home basketball game. Mr. Marcum was an assistant boys basketball coach so Dave Carstens and Tammy Spader were selected as Student Directors for the Pep Band. The Pep Band had a large number of songs that they played during the basketball season. “You’ve Said It All” and “On Wisconsin” were some of the popular songs that the Pep Band played. The Pep Band ended its season at the Boys and Girls State Basketball Tournaments in Lincoln. The High School Band then began to work hard in preparation for District Music Contests. They gave a pre-contest concert featuring the contest songs and two other selections on April 24. This was considered to be the best band TWIRLERS. Becky Lackas and Caryl Preston concert of the year by many of the people who attended it. The band traveled to Wayne for contests on May 27. They returned to Randolph with an excellent rating. Some of the members of the band also participated in a solo or ensemble at contest. The students who received Superior ratings in the solo division were: Dave Carstens for his percussion solo; Kelly Thieman for his snare drum solo; Julie Carstens for her flute solo; and Shelly Wattler for her clarinet solo. The students who received Excellent ratings in the solo division were: Christy Carpenter for her piano solo; Becky Lackas for her piano solo; and Eric Pentico for his saxophone solo. The ensembles that received Excellent ratings were: Clarinet Trio which consisted of Dawn Gerkins, Connie Nordhues, and Lisa Thies; and the Tuba Duet which consisted of Janeen Kittle and Debbie Milander. These students were awarded Participation Pins by Mr. Marcum at Awards Night that was held on May 3. Mr. Marcum also awarded the John Philip Sousa Award to Dave Carstens. This award is given each year to a graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding service to the band over his her school career. Mr. Marcum awarded Tyler Osborn the Director’s Award for Band. This award is given each year to an outstanding junior high band musician who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Junior High Band program. Mr. Marcum also awarded letters to those students who lettered in band. Those students were: Dave Carstens, Kelly Thieman, Penny Milander, Jane Patent, Tammy Spader, Lisa Thies, Dawn Gerkins, Connie Nordhues, Julie Carstens, and Mike Peebles. The 1983-1984 school year was a big year for the Randolph High Band. The band remained busy and hard working throughout the year and always was enthusiastic. This hard work and enthusiasm created the full house of talent that existed within the band. SUPERIORS. Shelly, Dave, Julie, and Kelly Dave Carstens was awarded the John Philip Sousa Tyler Osborn received the Director’s Award from Mr. Marcum. Award for Band. 9
