CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1978 our time as high school students at Randolph High School began. Sixty-five students comprised what was and still remains the largest class in high school. Nineteen hundred seventy-eight was the first year freshman classes were moved here to the West School with the rest of the high school. This move led to the re-instatement of a once-popular in-school event, freshman initiation. We became the first class in a number of years to be initiated by the seniors. The boys were required to dress as girls and the girls as babies. All of us were slaves of the seniors for our initiation into RHS. Our class officers for our first year in high school were as follows: President-Cary Clark; Vice-President-Me-lanie Strathman; Secretary-Treasurer-Karla Borst; and Student Council Representatives-Marci Wattier and Dave Whalen. For our sophomore year Brad Albers was elected class president with Karla Borst vice-president, Dennis DeLong secretary-treasurer and Kathy Bermel and Becky Boling were chosen as student council representatives. Corinne Helsing was awarded 1st place in the annual Voice of Democracy contest. Janice Berner, Debby Koehler, Corinne Helsing and Jeff Winkelbauer were honored by being inducted into the National Honor Society. In the spring, Dennis DeLong, Dean Hanna, Daryl Loberg, Merlin Loberg, Carolyn Bierschenk, Debby Koehler, Karla Borst, and Marci Wattier jive re chosen as prom waiters and waitresses. Mr. Ken Morten and Mr. Chuck Keizer become our class sponsors that year with Mr. Ken Morten remaining with us throughout our high school years. Mr. Chuck Keizer, however, would retire from teaching after our sophomore year to pursue other interests. Mr. Ray Schnell joined Mr. Ken Mor- ten as sponsor for our junior and senior years. Brad Albers and Karla Borst were re-elected as class president and vice-president in our junior year. Melanie Strathman was elected secretary-treasurer and Carolyn Bierschenk and Debby Koehler were our student council representatives. Our junior year was a busy one with sports playing a major role. While all the teams did well, the state championship in girls basketball had to be the highlight. Melanie Strathman, Debby Koehler, Becky Boling, and Jackie fohn-son were members of that undefeated championship squad. Daryl Loberg and Randy Green were honored that year by being named to the all-conference football squad, and the girls track team won the district championship for the 3rd year in a row. In the fall we held our own Junior Class Dinner Theater, presenting the play, Finder's Creepers. Dan Van Slyke and Jackie Johnson were selected as best actor and actress. In the spring, the all-school play Hillbilly Wed-din' was staged, with our own Leah Amman chosen as best actress. Also that spring, Corinne Helsing brought back a superior rating from the district music contest at Wayne for her clarinet solo, and Gina Rasmussen was given 1st place in the Voice of Democracy contest. In May, we presented the seniors with the Junior-Senior prom and banquet, with the theme - Shadows In the Moonlight. Karla Borst was crowned Prom queen at the dance, which followed the banquet. Before our 11th year ended, David Creamer and Gina Rasmussen were named as ushers for graduation, and Corinne Helsing and Jeff Winkelbauer were chosen to attend Girls' State alternate. When our last year here at RHS finally arrived one of the first things we did was elect Brad Albers to his third, consecutive term as president of our class. Carolyn Bierschenk was elected vice-president, with Joan Loberg secretary-treasurer, and Daryl Loberg and Sherri Bloomquist representing the class on the Student Council. We also received a new principal for our last year, as Ron lies filled the spot left open by the departure of Ron Wecker, who had been our principal for the past three years. The first major event of our last year was of course, Homecoming. After being the first to be initiated, it was now our turn to do the initiating. The freshmen became our slaves for a day, with the boys dressing as Dolly Parton and the girls imitating Fonzic, from Happy Days. The crowning of the king and queen took place at halftime of the football game this year. Scott Wattier and Sherri Bloomquist were chosen as king and queen with Anne Preston, Marci Wattier, Debby Koehler, Merlin Loberg, Daryl Loberg, and Dean Hanna comprising the rest of the royal court. With the alumni association's decision not to sponsor a public homecoming dance, our class sponsored one of its own after the game for all high school students. The theme for homecoming was Endless Love. The Sweetheart Ball arrived in 1982 with Corinne Helsing and Steve Thies being selected to reign as king and queen. This year's all-school drama club play was entitled, The Worm Shall Squirm. Randy Green and Anne Preston were chosen as best actor and actress. On May 1st the juniors took us to a Tropical Paradise for the Junior-Senior prom. Dennis DeLong was crowned as prom king. Ten seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society in our last year. They were Kathy Bermel, Sandy Buell, David Creamer, Patty Fuchs, Madonna Gubbels, Jackie Johnson, Joan Loberg, Corene McCarthy, Anne Preston, and Melanie Strathman. Corene McCarthy received a superior at the music contest in Wayne for her solo vocal performance. Mark Korth was awarded the highly prestigious State Farmer Award at the State FFA convention. Anne Preston received the outstanding vocal award for music, and Corinne Helsing was the recipient of the John Philips Susa Award in band. Many seniors were active in sports throughout high school. Receiving all-conference in their senior year were, Daryl Loberg, Randy Green, and Merlin Loberg for football; Debby Koehler for volleyball; and Randy Green, Dean Hanna, and Debby Koehler for basketball. The volleyball girls won three trophies this year, the football team won the first overtime game Randolph had been involved in, in football since the overtime rule was installed, and the wrestling squad sent Daryl Loberg to the state meet in Lincoln. The girls basketball team come within two games of qualifying again for the state tournment, after being near the top of the charts all year long. The boys team played in one of the longest games in RHS history, a 5-overtime loss to Bloomfield, and later, would come within 2 points of playing for the district championship. Both girls and boys basketball teams each brought home 2 trophies this year. It was a busy last year, but we did find time to choose and order our announcements, and various other souvineers of our senior high school years. For our class colors we chose those of the rainbow, for our flower, the daisy, and our motto - Beyond the Rainbow Lies the Promise of the Future. Today, our class history becomes complete. Many of us have been together for 13 years now and those who have not, certainly seem like they have. We've accomplished many things together. We've enjoyed many happy times, suffered through many sad times, shared the joy of having dreams come true, and watched on, as other dreams crumbled along the way. Together, we've lived and grown into what we now are. Now, today, May 16th, 1982, it is time for us, as a class, to part, and go our own ways. As a body this class will be split, but in memory it never will. The memories of the last 13 years will live forever in the minds of all 61 of us. On our own now, the time has come for us to use the knowledge we have acquired, to go out, and begin striving onward, in the hope that someday our knowledge will lead us somewhere beyond the rainbow, to the promise of the future. 12

Most Inspirational Player Award went to Jeff Winkelbauer. Outstanding Defensive Player Award went to Ken Boatman. Mr. Hustle Award went to Dan Van Slyke and Jeff Winkelbauer. Most Improved Player Award: SENIOR- Dean Nordhues, JUNIOR-Marty Nordhues, SOPHOMORE-Dave Korth, FRESHMAN-Darrin Nordhues. The Leader in steals Award was presented to Dean Hanna with a total of 47 steals. Other basketball honors can be found on pages 20-21. COED BASKETBALL. The Coed Intramural Basketball Championship Team members are Kevin Lenhoff-captain, Gary Clark, Marty Nordhues, Bill Schmit, Jeff Thies, Jackie Bargstadt, Rhonda May, Michelle McLain and Mari Pflanz. SPECIAL HONORS FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE There were four students at the Randolph High School winning Best of Show at the Fine Arts Festival. Those students were Cindy Burgel, named Best of Show in the high school classes; Corene McCarthy received first place in the Music Division with a vocal solo; Patty Fuchs was named alternate, and Jane Pflanz was the winner in the Style Revue. Sherrill Burmester was chosen to represent Randolph this year at Girls State in Lincoln. Sherrill is a junior at the Randolph High School. Bobbi Loberg was chosen alternate. She is also a Junior at Randolph High School. Becky Boling, age 18, has been selected to compete in the Nebraska Miss T.E.E.N. pageant. The pageant is to he held at the University of Nebraska May 28-29 in Lincoln. This pageant is the official Statewide Finals for the Miss T.E.E.N. Corinne Helsing, age 17, has been selected to be in the 1982 Miss Nebraska National Teen-Ager Pageant to be held at Nebraska Wesleyan University June 25-27. The Miss Nebraska National Teen-Ager pageant finals are to be held in August. There were three Voice of Democracy Oratory contest winners in the Randolph High School. First place went to Denise Rasmussen, second place went to Bobbi Loberg, and third place went to Cheryl Berner. Cheryl Berner attends seminar. Twenty selected high school students from across the state gathered in Wahoo, May 14-19, for a unique, federally funded seminar on computers. Among the 20 attending was Cheryl Berner of Randolph High School who was selected by a special committee from the Nebraska State Department of Education. She was chosen because of her high academic standing, high IQ, and her response to a four-page questionaire that included two essays. While attending the seminar, Miss Berner stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Schoen. Cheryl is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Berner. Cheryl's comment: It was a very unique experience and I had lots of fun while learning a lot. Mildred Brown was presented a teaching award ofr her 34 years of dedicated service. Henry Hilkemann was presented an award for serving on the school board for 20 years. 14
