Text from Pages 1 - 30 of the 1926 volume:

THE SCHOOL The class of 1926 is the fifteenth class to pass from the doors of this building to the tasks that await them when high school days are over. Of all this group there is not one who does not look upon the days spent within these walls as among the happiest of his life. “As boundless, Alma Mater, as the sea. lias been thy love; nor shall the mountains last Less long than our enduring love for thee; To thy ideals of life shall we hold fast; Our wills have been well tempered by the old To mould and shape the nature of the new; So, with full hearts, high hopes, and courage bold, The class of ’26 bids thee adieu!” R. A. Dawson, A. B. Superintendent of schools Senior class sponsor Coach of football Mr. Dawson came to Randolph five years ago as coach of athletics and has just completed his third year as superintendent of schools. It is to Mr. Dawson, our teacher, sponsor and friend, that we may attribute much of our success and happiness during our four years of high school. Donald Snygg, A. B. Principal of high school Coach of basketball and track Coach of senior class plan Two years ago Mr. Snygg came to us as teacher of mathematics and science. But this year he has acted in the capacity of principal and has taught science and journalism. Mr. Snygg has an appetite for work and has accepted numerous burdens without complaint. We have ever found him a ready helper, counsellor and friend. Faculty Eunice Carlson, A. B. History and English Sponsor class of ’27 Couch of junior entertainment Lucy A. Edwards, A. B. S. all th im portant events of the years 1914 to 1926 inclusive: On September 1, 1914 the first phase of our senior motto. “Out of School Life into Life’s School”, saw its beginning. On a dreary, rainy day forty-four boys and girls started their school life in the Randolph Public School. Among this forty-four were only ten of our present number. The six years in the grades were full of pleasures and trials. School soon began to lose its newness and each succeeding year showed to us more clearly the necessity for an education. Although these years were the war years they give to us only the happy remembrance of childhood and school life. During this period three who are still with us joined our group: Evelyn Frost, Sadie Sherwood arid James Kerr. In the sixth grade under Miss Stewart, (we welcomed .Miss Stewart again as a teacher when we were juniors) we entered into the first operetta, “The Wedding of Prince Charming and Daisy”. This operetta was the first to be presented by our school. Junior High was a new experience and we enjoyed it hugely. Under Miss Bell and Mr. Thomas we had many picnics and programs. We enjoyed the practice of basketball and one of our number. Sadie Sherwood, made the girl’s high school team. One duty we faithfully performed was the task of listening attentively to the senior high school programs. We supported all carnivals, declamatory contests, games and programs of the school. And as a grand finish in the eighth grade we had a Slouch Day which worked successfully for three hours. All this had been performed to give us training for our high school days. Freshmen at last; but if we were green in that first year of our high school career we never realized it. The year was very much of a success if we would judge by the number of contestants we placed in the various school activities. In this year eleven more of the present class joined our group. Our second year in high school was uneventful except for geometry and a half day Sneak Day. The latter was made up on our return home, the former was made up the former year. The Junior year was a happy one as it held none of the scorn of being freshmen and none of the sorrow of the senior year. The one (Continued on Page 10) CLASS HISTORY—(Continued) big event of this year, the Junior-Senior banquet, was decided success. Miss Morse and our mothers assisted greatly in the success of the undertaking. Our last year in high school brought frolic and seriousness and now today when our senior sneak day. class play and high school days are gone and we stand on the threshold of “Life’s School”, we hope wholeheartedly that it will be as kind to us as “School Life” in our old high school. Hazel Kinkaid Class Prophecy This is the prophecy of the (Mass of ’‘26 Known as good sports to all with whom they mix; We find them parting from friends so dear Searching and seeking a life career. Those who have mated are living at home, 'The rest in the weary search still roam. Of Howard Cain we hear many times l-’or he is the editor of the Randolph Times. (In this business he has won his fame And here we leave him to play life’s game.) Walter who was a circus performer. Has changed to the life of a social reformer. Waldo has married a Norfolk lass; She’s said to be of a very high class. Louise. Alta, Hazel and Ruth are left with oidy one tooth. But diligently as was always their rule, Are still in the profession of teaching school. Flo ami Bethync have both taken the dive Married eight years and still are alive. Flo to a preacher whom with great effort, she won; Bethyne to a dry goods merchant’s son. In these two homes may happiness stay Throughout their lives may love hold its sway. Pete and Joe are still taking turns; The fire of love still deeply burns. To these two youths St. Peter must say When he meets them at tin gate on judgement day, “You have earned a seat in the very front row With the consistence you’ve been able to show.” Jim. Malvin, Carl and Jim. (The latter we’ve always known as Slim) Have started a shop in an eastern town Selling dress suits and evening gowns. Evelyn Frost is much the same Has taken life just as it came. Dallas is an opera singer of fame, Floyd became a doctor who cures the lame. Blodwin, Myrtle, 11a and Minnie Have married rich and are well to do, They know not the felling sad or blue. Sadie Sherwood, Verle and Agnes Hughes Have started the business of selling shoes. How many stood trembling, stricken with awe. And how the two upper classes labored almost in vain to acquaint them with the routine ami traditions of our high school. But they did not remain long in this cowering mood. Before the end of the year they had assumed full responsibility for themselves and had become acquainted with the time honored customs and traditions. You will remember how this class of ’27 tried to extend the privileges of the seniors to the lower classmen and in consequence established the first freshmen sneak day. As sophomores they were domineering. They had long forgotten the humbleness they had shown the preceding September. Remembering the days of their own green actions they administered a savage reception upon the incoming freshmen. They assailed them with torments as though that would add prestige to their important position. We now find them taking the honorary position of juniors, about to embark on the last, and we hope happiest, year of their high school careers. E. F.
