It is the warm greeting of an old friend and the crowds roaring from the football field on chilly Friday nights. Activities are organized and the noise of the marching band wafts through the window, and we sometimes long to escape from studies. Activities, sports, and social events reflect all the vigor and enthusiasm of autumn at Randolph-Henry. The Charlotte County Board of Education formed policies for the Charlotte County school system and was responsible for the operation of the county schools. New members of the board this year were Mr. Spraggins Marshall of Madison district, and Mr. Robert Hall of Central district. Other members of the board were Mrs. Flournoy Barksdale of Roanoke district, Mr. John Lyle of Walton district, Mr. Purcell Hamlett of Midway district, Mr. Judd Jackson of Bacon district. Mr. Jackson served as chairman of the board and Mr. Lyle was vice-chairman. MR. GRANT 0. McGHEE Superintendent of Schools Mr. Grant 0. McGhee received his AB degree from Emory and Henry College and his MA degree from Duke University. His experience includes teaching, serving as Director of Instruction, and as Principal. In 1957 he became Superintendent of Charlotte County schools after serving as Principal of Randolph-Henry for five years. Mr. McGhee provided leadership for the schools by attending scheduled meetings, serving on committees, making numerous speeches, and publish ing various articles. MR. ORAL E. WARE Mr, Oral E. Ware is serving for the third year as Principal of Randolph- Henry. He received his BS and AB degrees from Fairmont State Col- lege and his Master’s degree from the University of Virginia. Before coming to Randolph-Henry in 1960, Mr. Ware was with the Norfolk County School system as Supervisor of Distributive Education. He had served also as a teacher at Cradock and Churchland High Schools. Mr. Ware’s enthusiastic and warm spirit serve as a guiding light to the student body in all of its endeavors — scholastic, social, and athletic. MRS, KATHLEEN E. MITCHELL Mrs. Kathleen E. Mitchell is a graduate of Randolph-Henry High School and attended Madison College. As secretary of the general office Mrs. Mitchell has added much to the success of the year in the way of friendliness, as well as helpfulness. Her efficiency in handling office matters has contributed to the smooth- ness of the school year to both students and members of the faculty. Marshall L. Bailey B.S., M.Ed. Jn)in er WINTER Winter brings to Randolph-Henry gloomy days of rain in November, but soon the soft snowflakes and the glow of Christmas act as a buffer to the cold. Studies are pressing but the busy schedule of classes is neglected for the spirit of Christmas as the Christmas pageant and the holiday dances precede the holidays. Soon the school is desert- ed, and then we return to face exams and the excitement of basketball games. Exams lead into a new semester as the last snow melts, and we end a winter of studies and busy gaiety. enior Glass Officers President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer . . . Reporter .... There is a new curiosi- ty and activity in our lives, balanced with dances, picnics, and school elec- tions. But most especially, spring brings with its own warmth of friends, and the reward of goals striven for together. Editor-in-Chief . . Choosing pictures The Editor’s job is an important part of planning an annual- ideas are collected and compared and the best are selected to use. U£e Boy 1963 A rare picture of Dwight. He’s usually busy snapping everyone else. Not even an annual can be run without money. The business staff handles ads, orders, and expenditures. Billie Waller, Ellen Nelson, Sherry Eastridge, Vivian Flesh- man, and Mary Viele, assisted by Mrs. Lawson, work on layout. Due largely to the knowledge, the experience, and above all, the patience of one Mrs. Frances Lawson, Randolph-Henry has an annual every year. The minimal size of this year’s class was a problem for her, in addition to the inexperience of her proteges. Picnics cul- minate the activities of many groups. Then comes the end of another year; the last exams, the leave taking of friends who mean more than they know. All take with them the wisdom of new experiences. As blue and white robed seniors march across the stage for the last time, they know that the long-sought diploma can never rep- resent all that they have gained from Randolph-Henry. yficj i Salesmen Mary Ware 2nd Vivian Fleshman 3rd aaazme Gap i . ams 1962-1963 ' ! ’ron Kanmer Hal Hardinge Vivian Fleshman Ned Locke 124 Delegates S a e Each year some deserving Junior boys and girls are selected as delega- tes to Boys and Girls’ state at V. Di- rected by Mrs. Betty B. Ware, with Harold Bell, Mary Viele, and John Bartholomew in the only three parts, it brought home a high “Superior” from the state meet in Charlottesville, where the production was praised for both direction and selection of a literary work. a Harold Bell hammed his way through the title role of Smirnoff. Mary Viele played Mrs. Popoff, a young widow who resented Smirnoff’s intrusion. John Bartholomew stole several scenes as Looka, the aged servant. The judge at Charlottesville said Margaret Clardy’s make-up on the three principals was the the day’s best. 135 Hal Hardinge, Prompter Vivian Arrington, Brenda White, Sandra Childress, Bette Ewing, Marianne Walker, Judy Hamlet, Homecoming Queen, Carol Gibson, Gail Smith, Cecile Kennedy, Susan Gilliam, Sandra Viar. 136 CProm Queen CTltten c an is Jenny Lou Allen Marianne Walker Billie Waller JPl rom ueen Billie Waller MISS LISA HAMMER Miss Lisa II a n m e r , Sophomore at Randolph- Henry won the Miss South Central Fair Con- test in Chase City in September.
