' yr : ■ 1 u ' .• , V RANDOLPH-HENRY HIGH SCHOOL Charlotte Court House, Virginia. In September, the threshold of Randolph-Henry lies open, offering the opportunities and promises of a new year. Co-Editors Kathy Cox, Mamie Hamlett Business Manager Jean Elliott Faculty Adviser Mrs. Frances D. Lawson THE LOG Published by the Senior Class of 1962 RANDOLPH-HENRY HIGH SCHOOL Charlotte Court House, Virgini a Volume XVIII RANDOLPH HENRY HIGH ESTABLISHED CLASS OF 1943 PROPERTY OP THE LIBRAE ' 0? VirGIN ' a BKBMGND.VA At Randolph-Henry High, 1962 is, and will be, the best year of your life. It is a time to study, to learn, tc determine what the years ahead can bring; a time of disappointments and successes; a time of confusion and calm — a unique way of life. Remember the Fall of 1961 with its perfect Homecoming? Even though your team didn’t win the game, it was still per- fect because it was yours. Remember the magazine campaign which enables us to complete the Field House, the class plays when the familiar auditorium stage ac- quired the air of Broadway? The trip to the University of Virginia; the inspiring Christmas pageant ; the S. C. A. dance; mid term exams when you wondered if study was worth the time ; the basketball games you stood in line for, just to yell yourself hoarse for the Statesmen team because it was your team and you loved it — it was the winter of 1962, remember? FOREWORD Spring brought with her the baseball games, the festive prom, Senior week, and the inevitable final exams with more late study hours. Sometimes you felt like quitting. Yet knowledge brought satisfy- ing security. When the last books were taken out and your locker was empty, waiting for the belongings of some other student in some other year, you became a little less anxious to leave the place that had been your home for the best years of your life. That night in June of 1962 you walked across the stage to receive your diploma. In your mind’s eye you saw the year pass by again! Somehow the total of all of those months produced a memory you will cherish always — We, the 1962 Log Staff, hope we have captured this memory for You. Changing Schedules Mr. Ware assists Margaret Clardy with her schedule. Seniors on Front Lawn Spring days bring students out of doors during lunch. Junior Talent Show Class talent shows always mean a lively assembly. m — V Football Game A home game brings the school week to an exciting close. season. The Kickoff Mr. Donaldson gets the sales campaign off to a good start. I Juniors Decorating the Gym for the Prom The Juniors and their sponsors work hard to make the prom a huge success. R. B. Clark and his Combo entertain in assembly. DEDICATION To one whose classes offered not only the fundamentals of the course, but also were spiced with bits of humor, an abundance of wisdom, and best of all a personal interest in each of her students. To one who had the ability to make the “dead language” of the Romans come to life, to make the facts of ancient history of vital concern in the present, and to bring the beautiful thoughts expressed in literature to our realm of understanding. With love, admiration and respect, w e, the staff of The Log, dedicate this ‘volume to one of Randolph-Henry’s most dedicated and best beloved teachers. MRS. JANE CARTER HOLT TL pL KV 1 l , 1 ■p ' f r f ■L i 1 ,4 r m ] Sr 9 1 1 BOARD OF EDUCATION The members of our Charlotte County Board of Education have devoted much time to the improvement of our schools. They are responsible for making our school district what it is today. We wish to express our gratitude to: Mr. R. S. Chamberlayne, Jr., Mr. Purcell Hamlett, Mr. G. 0. McGhee, Mr. Judd Jackson, Mr. J. F. Lyle, Mrs. F. X. Barksdale, and Mr. R. F. Maloney. 16 MR. GRANT O. McGHEE Superintendent of Charlotte County Schools During 1961-62 Mr. G. 0. McGhee, superintendent of county schools, fulfilled his duties to meet the needs of education in Charlotte County. He also interpreted the schools to the public through numerous articles and speeches. He has done an excellent job. MR. ORAL E. WARE Principal, Randolph-Henry High School Only a man with an unusually strong character could under- take and successfully fulfill the demanding duties of a high school principal. The students of Randolph-Henry High have found such a man in their own principal, Mr. 0. E. Ware. We are pleased that he has done such a wonderful job for us. His friendly advice and patience has helped us in many ways. MISS JOSEPHINE MAHLER Secretary to the Principal Miss Mahler is one of the best known personalities at Randolph-Henry. She was kept busy the year round with records, telephone calls, and questions, but was never too busy to offer a friendly “Hello” to everyone. MRS. LUCY GARBER Nurse Whether it is a minor ache or a major accident, Mrs. Garber makes each of us feel better after a visit to the infirmary. We thank her for her patience and help. MRS. GRACE COOPER, Cafeteria Manager Mrs. Cooper and her helpers, Mrs. St. John, Miss Lipscomb, Mrs. Covington, and Mattie Stitts are re- sponsible for our lunches each day. They are to be commended. JANITORS AND MAIDS Hillary, Ed, Betty and Emma have the responsibility of keeping our building comfortable, clean, and attractive. This is no easy job since over six hun- dred people use these buildings daily. We deeply appreciate their efforts and commend them for a job well done. 4 .in in 1 • ' IL A f iP 1 - r mm E ' iLi §r ' T BUS DRIVERS Our bus drivers, Tyree Reamey, Rush Adams, Wil- liam Lovelace, Edna Smith, Larry Philbeck, Ern- est Johnson, Heno Lacks, Roy Crews, Morris Over- street, David Elder, Henry LaPradd, Olney Elliott, Willie Jennings, and Emmett Martin, endure the early hours, the noisy crowds, heat and cold to see that we all reach school and return home safely. Dramatics bring to the school a special excitement. There is the fun at try-outs, the work of practice, and finally the case of nerves for the first night the play is pre- sented. Aspiring actors come to the try-outs which are held about a month before the production. Some get the leading parts, other supporting roles, still others find their talent lies more in staging, make-up, lighting or direct- ing. However, the job to end all jobs is the px-ompting. More tedious than any other single occupation of the theater, prompting demands constant attention to the script, and to the action on the stage. On the night of the play, the prompt girl often sits in semi-darkness, following the script for the umpteenth time. Here at Randolph-Henry dramatics mean the one-act play that is presented before the critical eye of a judge.
