Our Scholastic Attainments At last There is one member of the faculty of Randolph-Henry High School who has played an integral part in the progress of our school since its opening day. She has proved to be an understanding friend, a wise coun- sellor, and an excellent teacher of mathematics. By her selfless devotion to her work as sponsor of the Magazine Campaign throughout the years she has made possible many important contributions to our school. To repay in part our inexpressible debt to her, We, the Seniors of 1961, with deep pride, respect, and admiration, dedicate this volume of The Log to MISS MAUDE CLAY PUGH 14 To instruct, and to guide young people; to present a standard of in- telligence and morality for these formative years; to improve the pur- poses and the dreams of adolescence ; and to . indicate the correct way of living — these are the labors of a high school administration. Varied and often difficult duties fall to these adults as they work day after ' day in charge of 600 students. Our mental, physical, and spiritual growth are supervised by them; our activities are sponsored by them; and our privileges are granted by them. They are instructors, educators, and advisors of Randolph-Henry- — as vital to these buildings as the students themselves. Cfiavlotte County Board of education Mr. R. S. Chamberlayne, Jr., Mr. Purcell Hamlett, Mr. G. 0. McGhee, clerk; Mr. Judd Jackson, Chairman; Mr. J. F. Lyle, Mrs. F. X. Barks- dale, Mr. R. F. Maloney. These people have given many hours for the betterment of young people in Charlotte County. They are the civic minded citizens who have made our school district what it is. They are responsible for our wonderful faculty, our numerous courses, and our physical plant. Truly we are grateful. 16 MR. GRANT 0. McGHEE Superintendent of Charlotte County Schools Mr. McGhee has been superintendent of the Charlotte County Public Schools since 1958. Under his capable leadership our schools have at- tained excellent recognition and have made outstanding contributions to our county and state. MR. ORAL E. WARE Principal Mr. Ware, principal of Randolph-Henry High School for the current school year, has already proven himself to he a wise counsellor, helpful director, and an inspiring leader. Teachers and students seek his advice and value his opinions. Under his administration our school has accomp- lished much in all fields of academic endeavor. Mrs. Grace Cooper Cafeteria Manager Mrs. Cooper, and her helpers Mrs. St. John, Miss Lips- comb, Mrs. Covington, (not shown) and Mattie Stitts are responsible for our lunches every day. They truly help us on our way. Mrs. Lucy Garber School Nurse Mrs. Garber cares for those who become sick at school. Her first aid kit is always handy when need- ed. She works untiringly to keep us healthy. Janitors Hillary Gregory, Ed Bird, Mattie Jones and Betty Smith are respon- sible for the maintenance of our buildings. It is no. easy task to keep Randolph-Henry clean and attractive. SCHtflffL Bus Drivers They drag themselves out of bed at dawn to face an empty bus that is soon to be crowded with noisy teenagers. In cold or hot weather these drivers furnish our transportation. Timeliness and pa- tience are required of them, along with a thorough knowledge and ability con- cerning the rules of the road. Each division is a year of progress, and of maturity. Recog- nition for improvement and advancement seems remote to the fledgling pre-freshmen, but it is evident to the venerable senior. The senior section of the auditorium is held dear to those who spend their final year here. This and other honors will be passed on to those to come as we leave Randolph-Henry behind. Soon these pre-freshmen will become the seniors, and eventually all of us will be the alumni, the past of Randolph-Henry. Our memories and accomplishments are left behind only in the un- written history of the school. For we, the students, were this year the spirit and the life of Randolph-Henry. ACTIVITIES The liveliness of the school year presents itself in many ways, both in and out of the classroom. The opportunities of activity are unlimited, as there is a place for everyone in the organizations of Randolph-Henry. The intellectual and the athlete can each fulfill their interests in at least one of our clubs. These associations provide the participants with the fellowship that is so important to young people. They offer also a pur- pose in working together for a mutual goal, be it Homecoming, or the sponsoring of a dance. Here we may discover where our talents and destinies lie, for this is the testing ground for our abilities. 75 Gfie Cog CO-Editors Jean Chatten Nancy Clay Senior Editors Barbara Achenbach Jo Ann Marshall Carolyn Ramsey Sports Editor Stuart Lawson Feature Editor Kay Paulette Cog Staff Five hundred identical Logs were published this year. Some of these annuals will be stored in the bottom of a chest, and some will be dis- played on a table in the bedroom to one day welcome an adult returning from college. Some will be misplaced as we move to a new home. But none are forgotten. Many years from now, in the fall of our lives, some of us will open this book again. The pictures and the captions will mean more to us then, when our classes exist no more and these are faraway, dim memories. For us, The 1961 Log is, and always will be, the magic of memory and the immortality of Randolph-Henry. At club meetings, the stu- dents acquire knowledge of the customs and geography of the country. With this knowl- edge comes a desire to speak the language. Once there is fluency in the language, there is also understanding of the people. Therein lie our hopes for international peace, and here, in a high school club, is the beginning. Here is another way to grow and to mature men- tally and spiritually. The young men and girls on our teams, and the girls on the cheering squads who encourage them, profit immensely from each contest, be it won or lost. Good sportsmanship and sincere effort are the important elements of athletics. Keeping these in mind, the participants de- velop in the ability to think quickly, and to act quickly. In the fall, the glory of the football sea- son begins and leads the agonistic life at Randolph-Henry. The series of varied sports that follow offer wholesome entertainment for the Statesmen. High school without ath- letics is difficult to imagine, for they are an essential part of our year. Coaches and Captains Mr. Rao, Robert Tucker. Billy Pollard, Mr. Frye For the want of a good team, a coach was lost. For the want of a good coach, a team was lost. A winning team is not one which has more victories than defeats but one with a good relationship between coaches and the players. Through out the year these coaches have built up the morale and the playing ability of their players. Without their expert guidance and assistance even the outstanding team would find them- selves lacking. Managers Jimmie Neale, Lealon Vassar, Stuart Lawson, Bud Laughlin 1960 3oot6all Squad The call words of the varsity football team are “hit ’em hard’’. Through a grilling 10 games this season, Randolph-Henry fought to a 3-7 record. These victories were primarily the result of long hours of practice and exercise. In a rough and tumble sport of this type, a play- er must be alert mentally and physically every second. A great amount of credit should be given to these boys who worked to make their school proud of the football squad. 103 Watts .W Wilmoth drives 3ootf all Harding Pollard Wilmoth Victory 3ootka.ll Bartholomew Jolly Dalton Perdieu R-H intercepts H.
