N ST TIO Charlotte County Board of Sducatlon The Charlotte County Board of Education meets monthly to de- cide many matters in regard to the operation of schools. These prominent men and women, well versed in the problems of school students, prove their wisdom and understanding many times in solv- ing and eliminating worries. The board is composed of citizens holding varied positions in Charlotte County. Mr. Jackson, the chairman of the board, is a mer- chant in Wylliesburg, Bacon district. Mr. Maloney is a farmer in Madison district. Mr. McGhee, superintendent of schools, is also clerk of the board. Mr. Chamberlayne, president of the Bank of Phenix, represents Central district. Mr. Sublett from Midway district is en- gaged in farming. Mr. Lyle is a merchant in Keysville, Walton dis- trict. Last but not least is Mrs. Barksdale, a housewife from Roanoke district. I4 Superinienclenf of Charlotte County Schools MR. GRANT O. MCGHEE Mr. McGhee, superintendent of county schools, is a former principal of Randolph- Henry. Many of us remember him fondly as principal and feel that he still belongs to us and we are proud to share him with the other students of the county. 15 Principal MR. HUGH P. NOLEN Mr. Nolen, principal of Randolph-Henry, keeps his office door open to both students and teachers. Organizing the new courses of study, arranging schedules, communicating over the inter-com system, and settling our problems fill Mr. Nolen's school day and often require many overtime hours. l 6 MARSHALL L. Lyle BUSINESS EDUCATION Through courses in typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, the business education department prepares students to secure business positions. A large number of stu- dents choose typing as preparation for col- lege or for personal use. SOCIAL STUDIES Courses offered in this de- partment include Virginia his- tory and government, American history and government, world history and world geography as well as civics. Current events, outside read- ing, historical movies, and oral reports f u r n i s h purposeful le a r n i n g activities. These courses help students to meet every day realities and to pre- pare for future citizenship. 1 Miss Odom, Miss liauglian Departments Mrs. Bowen, Mrs. Nichols HOME ECONOMICS Home Economics courses seek to make the students aware of the value of a good home. These students learn to cook and to plan and make many useful garments. Their study of family life calls attention to the im- portance of happy marriages and parenthood. Through practical home mak- ing projects, the students learn to work independently toward the solution of personal and homemaking problems. ENGLISH Every time a person opens his mouth he tells the world the con- dition of his English grammar. Students have this fact impressed upon them as they tediously master gerunds, participles, and subordin- ate clauses. They utilize their learning by writing themes and term papers. One semester is de- voted entirely to literature, gen- eral for the first three years, American for juniors, and English for seniors. Mrs. Hamilton, Miss Laird, Mrs. McNair, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Pugh, Mrs. Ware Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Paulette, Mr. Williamson MUSIC AND ART From the slide of the trom- bone to the beat of the drum, the Randolph-Henry band is easily recognized as it marches briskly across the field. The musical group wear their bright blue uniforms as they partici- pate in football half-time activi- ties, p air a d e s, Homecoming, music contests, and their own concerts. Throughout our school you can see evidence of the excellent work done in the art department. Bulletin boards and posters keep us informed about important events. The art exhibit during the second semester is one of the high spots of the year. SCIENCE '4Oh no, Worms! Oh yes, and grasshoppers and fish, too. Biology students gain knowledge through the pains of dissecting while chem- istry students endure the danger- ous uncertainties of experimenta- tion. Physics classes are not without their suspenseful moments, also, but they occur on report day, not on lab day. Students in general science enjoy a few experiences from each of the above activities. Mas Miss Flowers, Mr. Young eparim ents Miss Odom, Miss Pugh, Miss Baughan, Mrs. McGhee, Mrs. Ware, Mrs. Lawson, Mr. Green, Mr. Ramsey, Mr. Starling, Mr. Bailey, Mrs. Bowen, not in picture, Mrs. Nichols PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION The physical education program provides wholesome physical and health activities for both boys and girls. It seeks to develop muscular skills through participation in both team and individual sports. Finally it endeavors to create and maintain a spirit of good sportsmanship, not only in interclass games but also in interscholastic competition. It forever strives to perpetuate a spirit of' kindness, courtesy, and respect toward all students repre- senting neighboring schools and teaches health, health habits, and driver training. GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS Twelve counsellors work with the co-ordinator of guidance, the administration, the faculty, the students, and the parents to pro- vide information, counselling, col- lege selection, and follow up ser- vice. Each student feels free to call upon his counsellor whenever there is a need. Mr. Frye, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Brewster, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Lyle Mr. Jones, Miss Pugh, Mrs. McGhee Departments MATHEMATICS Our math teachers stop at noth- ing to teach the principles of mathematics to us. In plane geo- metry the protractor and straight edge are evident. In solid geometry you will probably see models of figures in string and cardboard and in algebra you might even see a teacher rolling dice to explain a principle. In spite of the methods used, those planning to study math in college are grateful for Ran- dolph-Henry's excellent math de- partment. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Latin Latin, though sometimes er- roneously considered a dead lan- guage, proved to be a most popular course at R-H. Discussions of Rom an c u s t om s, the recount- ing of ancient myths, and making replicas of Roman articles boosted the students through difficult con- structions in grammar and made Julius Caesar seem a personal friend. Spanish Yo hablo Espanol ? This ques- tion is frequently heard in the vicinity of room 20. By studying the customs of the Spanish peoples, the students realized how much this country had contributed to modern civilization and culture. Mrs. McNair, Mrs. Holt Mr. Green, Mr. Ramsey, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Starling Library Colorful bulletin boards and im- aginative displays stimulate stu- dents to use the library more ef- fectively. The majority of those who use the library facilities do research, gathering materials from the periodical shelves or from refer- ence books. Students in search of pleasure reading choose from fic- tional or biographical novels. In addition to reading matter, the library provides films, slides and records. Students are introduced to new mate1'ial through showcase dis- plays, while teachers become ac- quainted with the resources at a faculty tea. Miss Barksdale is al- ways on hand to answer questions, locate materials, and generally aid the students. Agriculture Vocational Agriculture is a nationwide program of instruction in Agriculture and farm mechanics conducted in public schools for persons over 14 years of age who have entered upon or who are pre- paring to enter upon the work of the farm, or related occupations. l Miss Barksdale Departments 'fear 'v vs 1 oi Mrs. liuneh, Miss Martin, Miss McGrath, Miss Fentress, Miss Kes- ling Not Shown -Miss Wamsley, Miss Tench, Miss Webb, Miss Hogg: Fafeteria The way to the heart of any stuflent :il lt-ll is certainly through his stomach. Zhe Eilirary Club The Library Club is an organization of students who serve their school each day through the library. Satisfactory scholastic records and special aptitudes are prerequis- ites of membership in the Club. Beneficial skills are developed and knowledge acquired as the students share in library routines of receiving, reserving and checking out ma- terials, filing cards, repairing books, assist- ing with booklists, bulletin boards and dis- plays, shelving books, typing, etc. For out- standing service, individuals are awarded the school monogram. Activities of the Club include regular meetings, exchange visits with other school library clubs, certain money raising projects for library improvement, and special pro- grams, contests, teas and fairs in observance of Book Weeks.
