The Norfolk Avenue side of the Library is too often forgotten in using the building merely as a place to study or fr'om which to withdraw books. We believe thatrtbis columned building is the most beautiful on,tbe campus and that its hilltop position exempbfies Randolph-Macon's constant striving. 0 O 0 O D I 0 O U 8 I E i . l . LIPSCOMB His leaving was sudden and unexpected, for illness has never been considerate of plans and hopes, and his absence has sharply accentu- ated how very much his presence on campus meant to us. He is still a symbol of all the finest things for which we strive, and his spirit will always be a guiding influence on our college. To one who has dedicated his life to Randolph-Macon, we dedicate this HELIANTHUS of 1956 with appreciation, admiration, and love. Qi' Nia- 1 -,QQ ,A --:ik .t , X19 FUREWUHD Colleges are for educations. Many students come to college, their minds made up as to what they believe, what they want, and what they know. But college does not merely add to knowl- edge already assimilated. It makes the mind work, to re-evaluate what has been learned in the light of new knowledge, to consider oneself as a person, and to examine one's beliefs. This does not mean that college is destructive, it means that as thinking people we cannot and must not base our lives on false foundations. Col- lege widens the mind, giving it new understanding of old and familiar things, as well as of the alien. In the Latin, education means a leading out , a leading out from narrowness, not only in academics, but in living. ,WW ,W vw A nd PRESSER HALL Q mi 5 .vt W . ,,,w+ A wt mf M wa , vsfff-FZ we if Qi ,S ef 'fy-'rg mn mf Q gsm N. DE T GOVER Randolph-Macon is proud to offer to its students the opportunity for self-reliance and personal responsibility which is possible through Student Government. Because of his confidence in Randolph-Macon girls, Dr. Wil- liam Waugh Smith, our founder, entrusted to them a share in all matters pertaining to student conduct, loyal- ty, and honor. In 1902 a Constitution for Student Gov- ernment was drawn up and a legislative body was or- ganized, they have been in operation ever since. In order to uphold and develop these high standards set by our founder, students, faculty, and administration work to- gether through Student Government to create the har- mony in student life that is necessary for the welfare and happiness of the college community. This is an idealistic system which assumes that the individual has the moral and intellectual capacity to accept its fullest meaningg it is an ideal which is real to us, for our way of life is based on complete confidence in all the members of the college community. The basic principle of honor has remained constant ever since the founding of the college, but the system itself is con- tinually growing and being developed to meet the chang- ing needs of each college generation. Advisor . This year has seen the rise of a new institution at R-M-the Slceller. Organized in the spring of 1955, its purpose is to pro' vide a place where students and faculty may gather informally and buy refreshments and drug items. It was originally financed by student and faculty memberships, and it has now become a thriving business. As any of the Board members and their roommates can tell you, starting a business is quite a procedure. After hours of con- ferences, we received a charter from Student Committee and began to malce definite plans. We taste-tested all prospective merchandise and rubbed our hands raw sanding tables, Lucy Stansbury volunteered to do the interior decoratingg and when the final results of the membership drive were tabulated, we were in business. Since our grand opening last fall, which would have been impossible without Mr. Eubanlc's invaluable aid, we have continued to add to our equipment. Now the Slceller is such an essential part of R-M life that we wonder how we ever got along without it. These twenty-one girls in black dresses with yellow ribbons have served at all major college functions throughout the year. 114 I -4 CIILLEGE COUNCIL The College Council serves as an important channel through which student opinion and faculty opinion may be focussed and discussed. At Council meetings, there is opportunity for the interchange of ideas among students, faculty, and administra- tion on matters of interest to the college, Thus the three groups may achieve the complete understanding of each other,s view- points and policies which is fundamental to cooperation in both administrative and academic areas. With pledging, parties at the house, and a spaghetti supper, fall activities were in full swing, and the Orphans' party wasn't far off. Our Christmas tree had not only packages for us, but more especially gifts for Mildred, an eight year old girl whom we sponsored as our local service project through the Lynchburg Wlfare Department. Second semester had scarcely begun when our pledges became members, and we celebrated at an initiation banquet, being entertained by our new sisters. Spring came, we had running water again, and the May Day open house fsj as well as the alumnae tea had flown by. The act in the center ring folded as we bid our graduating stars uadieuw and looked forward to another show and another Zeta year. .eg 140 OFFICERS ANNE R. LAPOLT ..... .... Our horns and tails a-waggin', we were angels true at heart, At the Christmas orphans' party, we played dear Santa,s part. KD help was sent to Richmond, for crippled girls and boys, By giving to them happiness, we also gained some joys. As far as Korea our good will,s been spared, For our adopted sister we've both clothed and fed. Seamstresses, too, were the KD's this year, When we sewed bih and tuclcer for needy tots here. Wirli singing and dancing the Parisien tunes during Rush Week, it was converted into Chez Theta . . . no cafe was ever so gay! Fall brought many parties and good times-the pledge banquet at the Columns, a Halloween party for our Miss Hughes, a Thanksgiving party given for us by our pledges, a picnic with the Phi Cvams, the district president's visit and a slumber party. Then came the gala holiday season with a party for the Lynchburg orphans, At the annual banquet following initiation our new sisters provided us with enjoyable entertainment. Open house on May Day weekend and graduation brought the year to a close. Theta sisters began to think of the Grand Convention in Bauff, Alberta, Canada, and the return of many to Beta Beta in the fall. 154 ANN TODD .... . . ELINOR HILL JEAN Nooe . f 5. 'I G' '-he 5 . The biggest rivalry this year among the class teams was between the title holding Juniors ancl the title seeking Sophomores. The first game between these closely matched professional-like teams was a real thriller. The juniors came out on top by a score of 35-34, but the Sophomore team gave them stiff competition. After losing to the Juniors and Sopho- mores, the Senior teamsters were able to defeat the winless Freshmen Seven by a close score of 19-17. The freshman team was also on the losing end of a 65-Z3 score raclced up by the Sophomores who were out to get the title this year. The championship game again brought the Juniors versus the Sophomores. This time the Soph- omores outplayed their opponents with points to spare. When the thirty-two minutes of skillful play were over, the scoreboard read Sophomores 44, Juniors 32, and the hopeful Sophomores had won the title. As the 1955 hockey season got underway last fall, everyone wondered what kind of teams the different classes would muster for the competition. The Juniors, last year's winners, hoped to retain their title, hut as the season wore On, the Frosh team grew progressively stronger and looked like the team to heat for the championship. During the course of the season, the Sophomore and Senior teams were defeated by the stronger Freshman and highly favored Junior teams.
