Kern has become one of Randolph-Maconis inspirational symbols. He has passed on to us his philosophy that learning and life are inseparable and has brought to us the realization that learning is the basis upon which we will be able to build a fuller and more satisfying life. ETH ii . All year, from summer through the following spring, the staff members of the 1948 HELIANTHUS have been working for this moment-when you re- ceive this book, the product of our work. Manuscript, compiling, photography, advertising-all these and many more have been running through our minds until sometimes we wondered whether there would ever be an end, and Whether we like you would ever see the HELIANTHUS finished. Yet in spite of all our headaches, it has been fun watching things fit in- to place and seeing the l-lEI..IANTI-IUS grow toward publication. So in our behalf, our little sunflower presents this book to the Randolph-Macon faculty, students, and especially to the class of l948. Here it is!
