Dr. William Waugh Smith, our founder, entrusted to Randolph-Macon girls a share of all matters pertaining to student conduct, loyalty, and honor. Each student is conscious of an individual responsibility, and our Student Government, since its inauguration in 1902, has l:een our most valued pos- session. Working with the faculty, we have teen ahle to develop our own rules, and through them to achieve happiness and well-being in our college life. It is our purpose to foster and uphold this principle in all phases of our everyday activities, academic, social, or personal. Our principle is in the spirit of our traditions and has developed with our history. It has come from within and grown gradually, for our college was founded on the idea of trustworthiness and co-operation. Every student has contributed something to our prin- ciple, just as our principle has given a great deal to each girl. The advertising staff did yeoman service in scouring the town for ads in the fall, and especially in collecting the money in the spring. When all the bills were paid, in May, our reports turned in to Student Government, and all the beautiful Books distributed or mailed to the students, we reluctantly turned over our jobs to our successors, feeling confidence in them, but also being sure that they could never have more fun and profit from their work than we had. But somehow it was never monotonous, and we always managed to have fun while we worked. Our eternal gratitude goes to Mrs. Elliot, who always kept us posted on the latest news, to Dr. French, who really should have gone into the pub- licity business, to the Navy Department, who kept us supplied with space-filling WAVE propaganda fvery handy for last- minute blank spacesJ, and to those students who read every word of the Sun Dial, even to the editorials! It will be a long time before we forget the excitement of formulating our schedule for the year with plans to meet such teams as Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia. Then came the first debate, and we felt the thrill of a close argument. At mid-term we welcomed a group of enthusiastic freshmen, and closed the season with a list of hard-fought debates in which we endeavored to carry on the high reputation of the Randolph-Macon debate teams. That was Stage Door, our fall production. The Three Musketeers-Ross, Doss, and Struppaw began innumerable working hours when HMurder in the Cathedral was born, long before Christmas. Everyone pitched in with Craw- ford and Nettleton as heads of the Needle Crew and Touch as Chief Elec- trician. Rigidly following the famous Ross schedule, Sock and Buskin, in collaboration with the Dance Group, turned out another success full of hard work and fun for all. The Latin Club, one of the oldest clubs on campus, has given us stimulating entertainment and ideas we will always carry with us. We opened our year by meeting the Htenderest of Roman poetsf, Catullus, and later hours were spent with the inspiring, immortal Virgil. We are proud that we have been the ones to carry on the classical tradition on our campus, and we know that the words Latin Clubu will ever bring to our minds long and fascinating evenings spent in going deeper into our favorite subject with our teacher and friend, Dr. Lipscomb. With the senior majors as an enthusiastic nucleus, and with the help and guidance of Mrs. Smith and other members of the Department of Romance languages, the club soon got under way. Especially enjoyable was our Christmas meeting, when we sang Noche de Paz and other Christmas carols, read the Nativity Story from a Spanish Bible, and joined in the Mexican fiesta custom of breaking a gaily-decorated piriala filled with dulces. As a part of its activities, the Spanish Club has also sponsored a mesa espanola in East Hall dining room where the menus are in Spanish, and the con- X versation, also in Spanish, is animated. We have enjoyed the fun and i opportunity of using our Castilian outside the classroom. BE1'rYE JUNE UEESMANN President OFFICERS Presidenf ,,-,.,,,,, ,,.,,,.. LAREW MARY WALKER LEATHERWOOD Steering Committee Chairman Steering Committee Secretary We've tried to make this a year in which every member of the student body, faculty, and staff could find a place in the war effort on our campus. The Publicity Committee, with the ceaseless cooperation of the Sun Dial, kept us informed on what we could do. In the workroom tongues and needles flew to finish sewing and knitting. Bandages were rolled. Speak- ers talked of South America, China, France, and Russia. We gave our blood when members of the student body and faculty took a day off from classes to go to Lovingston. Our dollars were just as willingly given, and we went well over our goal of 54,500 to help American prisoners of war, to clothe children in liberated Europe, to support our newly opened chateau for French children, to aid Chinese relief, and to support our own activities here on campus. Included in the fund was our Red Cross contribution, which was later increased by the money made from the sale of tickets to the James Melton concert. We sold stamps and bonds in our new booth with outstanding success, the sophomores being responsible for a large part with their war stamp tickets to their class play. We sent Christmas boxes overseas to a paratrooper rest home, and later, with the Y, we filled more boxes for soldiers at Camp Pickett. For those that were interested there were classes in typing and shorthand, arts and crafts, child welfare, home nursing, nutrition and canteen. It has been a full year, a year of hard and truly satis- fying work. CHAIRMEN OF COMMITTEES Campus Chest Committee Committee on Lectures and Discussions Miss Nan V. Thornton Mrs. Kathleen M. No place on the campus was left unaware That one more great Even Day surely was there. Att Evens were in Paradise for one glorious dayg The Odds were in Paradise Lost, shalt we say? The left side of Main was the best place to dwelt, But the opposite side was a ver- itable hett. The funiors were Back home for tfecpsn in Fraternity Row. Not one of these girls was tactfing a beau. But the ctata the Evens all tfnelv the best Was the number of Old Maids living in West. And in New behind bars tived.a majority greater Of girls who began the phrase Who'd wanta date 'er? However, the Evens living in Webb Were more party-girtish than the ftightiesl deb. Dear Bones and Buttons, ever loyal and true, Stood guarding our Post that was painted anew. The Evens marched into chapel en masse. Att Hail March Fourteenth was the martf of their class. Oh, the life of a fireman! the funiors att sang, When the engine drove in with its belt att a-clang. There's no greater thrill, the Evens each said, Than to ride on top of the wagon so red. But the day was not over, for when sun had set, The Evens were toasted in royal banquet. And later that night, as we praised Even tore, Our maseots in spirit returned as before. Too soon had our Even Day come to a close, But our Even Spirit will tive on in those Who, as we att said our final good nights, Could see the bright radiance of our Even Lights.
