The Forty-third Ediiion of the Randolph-fwacon Studenl Year Boo Edited by Virginia Freeman, Ann Broaddus and Nell Boyd AN I! ELIANT-I-IUS X , ,v Annuaf Pulvlicalion of the Sfudenl Body of Randolph-fwacon WOH1Gl1,S College LlJllCl1I7Llfg, Virginia ONC hefore we arrived on Main Hall steps, she was well acquainted with us. Then we knew her only as a rather impersonal signature in a letter, hut it was not many days before we identified that name with the ever-smiling lady whom we saw so frequently either busily working at her desk or chatting with students on the fringe of the mail rush. She calls us all by name, she knows our virtues as well as our faults, and she is always ready with a pleasant greeting, a sympathetic word, or a kindly reprimand if needed. In deepest affection and appreciation for all her interest in us, we dedicate this book to Miss Annie C. Whiteside. Let's remember that no hook, however large, could ever enclose the many memories Randolph-Macon will always hold for us. This is just a tangible reminder of our wonderful four years here. But the things that matter most-the friendships, the sincere devotion to a common end, the simple satisfaction of heing an essential member of a community, the deep desire always to live up to the faith and trust placed in us by our college-of these things we need no reminder. They have become an integral part of us-they have helped malie us what we are. ,Q ,ir fz .,, I , v ,, S W ,. Jw 'MJ AM V 5, f s X . Since l902 Student Government has grown and become one of the most vital influences in our college life. Through the cooperation of each student in uphold- ing her responsibility to Student Government and to Randolph-Macon, we have been able to formulate and enforce our own regulations. Faculty and stu- dents worlc together to promote the welfare and happiness of our college life. We are proud that we have not misused the confidence placed in us by our founder. This honor principle is the fundamental principle of our community life since it is designed to more fully develop each student's sense of honor. It simply means that we try to live up to the standards of our college without being forced to do so. Honesty here is more a spirit of tradition, imbued in our institution, rather than a system. It has come from within and has grown gradually, for this idea of trustworthiness and cooperation came with the founding of the college. It has been added to and strengthened by the many Randolph-Macon students who have passed through these halls. The more each student absorbs the feelings of individual trust and community cooperation, the better and happier our college life becomes . . . the nearer we come to attaining our ideal. W. C. A. The Y. W. C. A. began its year with the ten Sophomore Ask-Me's meeting the trains. Joan made a success of the Ministers' Tea. Whitley and Ogle led the Freshman Club through a meaningful season. Rejuvenating Week on campus, instigated by Odie and Martha Trippe, stimulated the Y to better work. Scotty Cowan, the fall speaker, stirred us to action. The Qrphanage was paintedg the Negro Girl Reserves sang in Vespers. In the spring the Freshmen were inducted. 0n Sunday nights we listened to Music Room Concerts. With the help of the Advisory Board, we succeeded in having a Religious Institute on Human Affairs in April. Monthly meetings are centered around stimulating lectures by Dr. Lipscomb. In December we recognized the continuity of the past with the present in the many classical places passed by American soldiers in Africa, Sicily and Southern Italy. ln January we spent an hour with the whimsically modern Horace. Though the purpose is academic, classroom manners are put aside, and each meeting is closed by a cross-fire of questions to and from the always interested and interesting Dr. Lipscomb. It is a senior privilege thoroughly enjoyed. Presizlenl MEMBERS Virginia Chandler Mary Lou Jones Plunkett Julia Stanton Mary Hiller Florence Ridley Mary Whiteside Anne Melville Faculty Advisor, DR. LAREW Steering Committee Secretary Steering Committee Chairman Again we've tried to carry out our purpose- To mobilize the abilities and resources of the faculty, staff, and students of Randolph-Macon Woman's College, to support to the fullest the Government of the United States and its Allies in their resolution to defeat the enemies of Democracyf' With this in view, the Information Committee has made us global-minded by presenting to us a great Greek, a great Frenchman, a great Italian, a great New Zealander, and two great American teachers of philosophy to guide and to stimulate our thinking. The War Bonds and Stamps Committee has kept us mindful of our daily duty to back the attack: they have sold bonds to the college, bonds to the students, and stamps, stamps, stamps even in War- sagesf' The plans of the Relief Funds Committee were as global-minded as those of the Information Committee. We con- tinued to support our English Nursery, we contributed to Chinese and Russian Relief, to the help of prisoners of war in Asia, to the Red Cross, and to the support of the Day Nurseries in our own town. The Production Committee, with a new lease on life, turned out surgical dressings and clothing for refugee children, made collections of waste paper and assembled ma- terials for the workroom. Generous gifts of workroom material have been made by interested fathers of R.-M. students. Extra- curricular courses, if not so many or so largely attended, found their worth and place in the curriculum. We studied typing, shorthand, and home nursing, offered us by this committee. The Publicity Committee showed itself every day in every way, through the Sun Dial, posters, and the local press. It has been a year of working together toward a real and effective share in the great war-effort of our day. CHAIRMEN OF COMMITTEES RELIEF FUNDS COMMITTEE INFORMATION COMMITTEE MRS. GRACE T. VVhen dawn lvrolfe through the shadows, The sunis first intricate rays Revealed in joyous splendor This most glorious of all Odd Days. From the witch o'er old Mainis portals To Humpty hy the gate, Lay the magic lvourne of Nursery Land Where Odd lore reigns in state. New was the gingerbread castle Where Hansel and Cretel roam. Sugar and spice and everything nice Adorned Wehh Freshmen's home. The senior halt as the big had wolf The Odd classes moclfed with scorn Snalges and snails and puppy dog tails Cave East an aspect forlorn. Beneath an arch of carnations The Odds in splendor trod. Later the Ragged Robin blue Swayed proudly in the sad. After royal feast in the Land of Odd Came the fliclgering candlelight As sisters hands in friendship clasped, And Odd songs filled the night. Throughout the years forever Will echo our last refrain, Binding true sisters together ,Til the Odds all meet again. offs ' if 1 ,fl t .fi By SALLY LAWTON, Chairman All Hail March l4th in the year '44 Was a day that was shining and bright. Our Spirits were high, they were tried and true, We were led hy an Even light. Forty-four was a year of our country at war, So we showed just how it would pay. If we Backed the Attack we could Bring It was All Out-the Even Way. On the bridge of the U. S. S. Even, Our ship we had docked in Main, hlany a bond and stamp was sold For naught hut our country's gain. In East there flourished a Victory Carden Of ways that sophomores could aid. By doing their hit and lgeeping fit It was shown that the Even way paid. them Bac In West we loolged to the future And saw our sisters there As Waves or Spars or Wonien Marines Doing much more than their share. On the other side of the picture Were haarders and wasters in Webb. In New, what is more, there were rumors galore That the '45th column had spread. The noble Buttons and the faithful Bones Stood firm by our white hitching post. Our banner flew high and we sang to the sky Of the things that we value the most. All too swiftly, the shadows fell And this Even Day was o'er. We tool? our pledge, as we said goodnight, Of our faith in our Even lore. P S Socilg and Busfgin Presenis . . .
