VARSITY RESUME With an exceptionally light team this season, the Jackets capitalized on an unusually fine passing attack and an excellent spirit of aggressiveness to wind up the campaign with four wins and six losses. The gridders subdued Drexel, Guilford, American U., and Delaware U. They were conquered by Emory and Henry, Rich- mond U., V. P. I., Roanoke, VVilliam and Mary, and Hampden-Sydney. R.-M., I3g E. and H., I4 Although the Summers- men were on the short end of the score, they showed up well against the Wasps. The Jacket line, completely outweighed from end to end, gave the Wasp line a lot of trouble. The kicking of Welch, the blocking of Fox, and the passing of Lovett were the outstanding back- field featunes. Much of the pre-season pessimism was dispelled by the fine show- ing the light Randolph-lVIa- con aggregation made against their heavier and more ex- perienced opponents. R.-M., 0, V. P. I., 26 For the first time in many years the Ashlanders played the V. P. I. Gobblers. Al- though the Gobblers had a stronger and larger squad, the game was by no means a walk-away and was tighter than the 26-O score indi- cated. Much valuable ex- perience vvas gained by play- ing this larger outfit and the To the Left: Miller Loveh' Fox Irby Lewis Powell Smifh FCOTBALL Jackets profited by it later in the year. R.-M., Og Richmond U., 26 An eager Randolph-lWa- con eleven cherishing very faint hopes for victory, met the University of Richmond Spiders in a contest which was fought on practically even terms during the first half with the score board reading 7-0 in favor of the Spiders. The Richmond re- serve ranks were too much for the little Jackets and the Spiders were able to push over three more touchdowns in the last half. Although the homesters were the un- derdogs, much spirit and fight were displayed and the entire student body was proud of them. R.-M., ZI: Guilford, 6 The Jackets were finally able to break into the Win- ning column to bury the gridders f 1' 0 m Guilford. The Ashlanders were en- tirely superior in every de- partment of play. The Jackets opened up a land and aerial attack 'behind an impregnable line to march on down the field. Co- Captain Peterson, Sawyer, and Golubic were outstand- ing on the forward wall while Fox, Harrell, and Lovett were the spearheads in the attack. Kovar, Liv- ingston, Crystal, and Good- nack were impressive assub- stitutes. R.-M., l8g American U., 0 A favored team travelled to Washingtoii, D. C., and came through as expected to To the Right: Pugh Derowski Cramer Sawyer Golubic Montgomery Harrell clown the American U. pigskin toters. Billy Fox and Greasy Harrell led the assault. Harrell broke into scoring ter- ritory in the second period with a spec- tacular 1'un around left end for a 42- yard touchdown. Early in the final period Fox intercepted a pass and sev- eral plays later, the Fox-Sawyer sling- ing combination struck pay dirt. Liv- ingston seored the final six pointer in two plays from the 25-yard stripe. R.-M., 6: Roanoke, 20 The Lemon and Black travelled' to Roanoke and played before a homecom- ing crowd numbering 2,000 at the Salem Field. The fMaroon power sparked by Perry Crumly plus the fail- ure of the Jackets to click in the Hrst half put Randolpli-Maeoii on the tail end of the score. A rejuvenated Jacket team, aided by Fox's fine punting and Pt-:terson's interception of two passes, held the heavier Roanoke team to but one score in the last half. In turn, with two completed passes from Lovett to Sawyer and Goodnaclc, the stage was set for a Jacket score. Kovar plunged the ball into pay dirt. R.-M., 7: Drexel, 6 Randolph-lVIacon invaded the North to top Drexel 7-6. The invaders scored in the opening period following a pass interception by Harrell on the Drexel 42-yard line. Lovett broke loose on a 36-yard sprint to cross the Drexel goal line and then toed the pigskin through the uprights to add the extra point which later spelled victory for the Jackets. Drexel staged a comeback and pressed the Lemon and Black into defensive play during the second half. In the fi- nal stanza Glenn Williarlis plowed 29 yards to score 6 points for the North- erners. Goodnack was the Frank Me1'1'iwell of the day when he broke through to block the try for conversion. The score remained unchanged at the final whistle. R.-M., 261 Delaware, 0 On Homecoming Day, the Randolph- Macoii Alumni came, they saw, and were conquered by the Hne performance of their Alma lVIater's representatives against Delaware. The Jackets showed their best offensive play of the entire year against the Hens. With Lovett, Harrell, and Kovar acting as spark- -lf1l6l plugs of speed, deception, and power, the Jackets swarmed about the Hens to score by both air and land. Golubic snagged a pass from Lovett for the first six points. Sawyer and Lovett each ac- counted for a touchdown. After inter- cepting a pass on the Delaware 25, Har- rell picked up interference and crossed the goal line untouched. R.-M., 6: Wm. and Mary, I9 A hard-fighting Jacket team scored within five plays after the opening whistle had sounded. Lovett on the second play following the kickoff ran thirty-six yards to the Williain and Mary forty-five-yard line. On the next play Lovett passed to Golubic to put the ball on the one-yard line. Two plunges against the Indians' hard charg- ing forward wall netted the Jackets 6 points. Matthexvs and Howard scored for Williani and Ma1'y in the first pe- riod and Matthews converted after his touchdown. The second half defensive play by the Jackets prevented the ln- dians froni any further scoring. Peter- son, Chappell, Pugh, Derowski, Golu- bic, and Sawyer played excellent ball on the forward wall. R.-M.. 0: Hampden-Sydney, I2 Hampden-Sydney defeated Randolph- lVIacon for the first time in eleven years in the Jackets' final stand of the season. The game was played at Death Valley before a homeconiing crowd of 3,000. The first half showed two equally bal- anced teams in a O-O deadlock and it appeared to everyone that the final half would be the same. However, two breaks, one Z1 misjudgement of a high pass from center and the other a recov- ered punt by an alert Tiger man, put Randolph-Nlacon on the short end of a I2-O score. Peterson, lfVelch, and Chappell ended brilliant careers on the gridiron for the Jackets in this final game of the season. MONOGRAM WINNERS ROBERT GoLUn1c STUART PUG1-I MARSHALL. The Jackets opened the season against W. and M. and bowed to the Indians, 33-22. A Northern tour which in- cluded the University of llflaryland, Blue Ridge College, and American U. found R-M on the short end of the score three times. The University of Richmond ran wild against the Jackets, defeating the team, 45-11. Here the size and speed lf119fl of the big Richmond team overwhelmed the smaller Jackets. Upoh returning from the Christmas Holidays the courtsters broke into the winning column with a victory over Lynchburg. Sawyer and Phelps led the attack for the Summersmen. Spirited play by Sawyer and Fox failed to bring victory over Bridgewater College. The final score was 37-30. Elon College, perhaps one of the fin- est teams in N. C. State, won from the Lemon and Black, 54-30. A fast break- ing offense, aided by accurate shooting, smothered the smaller jackets. R-M invaded the court at Washington and Lee to find the Generals a large group of gentlemen powerful enough to em- erge the victors, 43-27. Apprentice School defeated the Jack- ets, 40-3i, on the R-M floor. Legget, Uerowski, and Sawyer starred for the jackets. The Richmond quintet met some spirited opposition at Alumni Gym in their second match with Randolph- lVIacon. The Spiders won but had to fight for every point. In a benefit game at the new Peters- burg Gym against l-lampden-Sydney, R-M was defeated by the Tigers, 40- 30. Sawyer and Phelps led the attack. After leading at half time 20-IO against American U., the Jackets crumbled and were handed a setback to the tune of 33-zo. The Meclicos won by a three point margin in a game featured by a change of lead throughout. Captain E. A. Welch, Golubic, and Derowski played heads-up ball. Randolph-Macon staged a second half rally to defeat Bridgewater at the lat- ter's court by a score of 40-27. Fox, Legget and Phelps led the attack in that period. Apprentice School shipwrecked the Jackets at Newport News by a score of 55-29. At Lynchburg the Jackets made it two in a row over the Hornets to avenge the many defeats suffered during the entire court season. Captain Welch led the team to a 31-30 victory. The Jackets traveled to Death Valley and were set back by the Tigers, 30-22. This was the second defeat by H-S in one season. At Ashland, Blue Ridge College again defeated the Jackets, 44- 31, while Sawyer played his usual hard game and led the scoring for R-lVI. Golubic was outstanding on defense. Phelps and Sawyers led the Jackets to victory over Hampden-Sydney at Ashland. A close game from beginning to end found the Jackets tied with but a few seconds remaining. Sawyer dropped a long shot and climaxed the season with a 36-34 victo1'y. 3 McLean, Kovar, McLinden, Bentley, Mclnfeer, Phelps, Newsome, Amory. fl20Ql LYLE MCFALL Pedigo lost only one of the eight games he pitched Vaughn of Richmond handed him this setback Phelps was accredited with victories in BASEBALL Supporting the fine pitching of Pecligo, Ste- phens, and Phelps, the 1939 team ably won fourteen of its seventeen encounters. Ray Rogers only competed in the games that freshmen were eligible and attained the highest batting average for that number of games. Support from the lettermen of the preceding year proved invaluable to the pitchers. McFall, Luce, Gillette, White, Waleski, and Newsome were veterans who served on the 1938 squad. The jackets opened their season on March 24 and 25 by defeating Ohio State 6-4 and 17-11. Stephens received credit for the opener while Pedi- go coasted through for a victory in the second game. The batting feature of this series was the perfect day that Gillette had at the plate getting four hits in four attempts. The Lemon and Black supporting Pecligo elced out a 4-2 win against Delaware on March 31. The following encounter proved to be a spree for the Jacket batters, and McFall led the outfit with four hits for five tries in a 17-4 walk-away over Washington and Lee. Traveling to the Norfolk Naval Base, the Ran- dolph-Macon nine vanquished their foes 7-2. Jack Poindexter, lumbering first-sacker, suffered a broken collar bone and was absent from the line-up for the remainder of the season. - The Jackets blanked Lynchburg in the initial Conference game, 10-0. Hugh Stephens allowed only one hit which came in the ninth inning. Ray Rogers took batting honors by hitting a home run in the first inning scoring three runs. Randolph-Macon added two more conquests to their record against Bridgewater, 12-6 and 11-2. Howard Luce drove out a homer to feature in the two days' play. The first let-down of the season occurred at Richmond when the Jackets lost without scoring, 5-0. Porter Vaughn of the Spiders struck out sixteen Randolph-Macon batters. The locals re-entered the winning column by an 8-5 victory over Hampden-Sydney. However, they were again caught in the Spider's web and lost their second ball game with Richmond 3-2. Steph- ens allowed only three hits but ineffectiveness at the plate caused the homesters' downfall. Hampden-Sydney invaded Ashland to be the Jackets' next opponent but were repulsed 9-2. The powerful hitting of the entire team accounted for this easy win. A trip to Wake Forest, a close score, and a 2-1 victory preceded the third defeat of the Lemon and Black. The William and Mary squad managed to squeeze out a 5-4 victory in a game that saw both teams ahead at different intervals. A sacrifice hunt by Luce in the final inning was the margin of victory over Washington and Lee. Ac the close of the game, the scoreboard read 8-7 in favor of the Jackets. Home runs by lVIcFall, Stephens, and Phelps were sufhcient to bowl over Lynchburg in a 24-3 victory. Batting averages were increased by a'l the Ashlanders and even manager Zehmer was in- serted into the line-up in the final inning. Randolph-Macon redeemed itself in its second encounter with William and Mary. McFall and Stephens repeated their performances of the pre- ceding game with a home run apiece. With a score of 17-2 in their favor, the Jackets completed a season of fourteen victories and three defeats. Those who saw action during the season were: pitchers, Pedigo, Stephens, Phelps, and Harbaughg catchers, Newsome, Waleski, and McDowell, in- helders, 1VIcFall, Luce, Poindexter, Prince, Mont- gomery, Smith, Eagle, and Welchg outfielders, White, Rogers, Cale, Gillette, and Golubic. Red Lovett established a new Conference record to highlight the season, bring the Ashlanders to within a few points of an upset victory over Hampden-Sydney in the annual Chesapeake Con- ference Meet and cinch an undisputed runner-up spot in the tabulations. . , - f-1 ' 1 Lynchburg . . .UM Bridgewater . . . 63 Gallaudet . . . . zo Hampden-Sydney . . 68M T, MAY zo Bridgewater . . 36 W. Honors went to Rawlings and Sawyer who accounted for firsts in the 440, javelin, discus, and shot to amass a total of I3 points each. Lovett, Lewis, Kibler, Griek, and Mc- OF THE SEASON IIZSJ Cormick took firsts and Pisani, Chappell and Gajewslci accounted for seconds. Bridgewater held the Jackets in check, but Rawlings, Lovett, McFz1ll, Griek, and Gajewski scored for the locals, and the result of the meet was a tie. Aw expected, Captain Kibler and Rawlings took second and first places respectively, KIB KIBLER Captain but an improved Bridgewater team won firsts in the mile, 880, 220, high jump, and discus. The R-NI tracksters took 6 second places. Witll practically no chance for rest the day following the Bridgewater meet, the Jackets motored to Waihiligtori for an engagement with Gallaudet College for the Deaf and Dumb. The Jacket cinderpathmen won almost as they pleased, taking ten of the fourteen fll'StS. Captain Kibler, Pisani, Rawlings, Lov- ctt, Gajewski, lVIcCarrick, and NlcCor- mick were outstanding in their particular departments. l-lampden-Sydney handed the R-lVI trackmen their first set-back of the sea- son. However, the stellar performances by Lewis in the 880, Rawlings in the 220 and the 440, Lovett in the IOU, and lVIcFall in the broad jump sparked the Yellow jacket attack. Gajewski also added some points for Randolph-lVIacon, netting a first place for the losers with a Herculean heave of the discus. Run- ner-up positions were procured by Cap- tain john Kibler in the 440, lVIac Mc- Cormick in the mile, Barney Lewis in thc 120, John Rawlings in the javelin and broad jump, Al Gajewski in the ll26l javelin, and Johnny Griek in the pole vault. In the Chesapeake Conference tilt, the jackets were nosed out by Hampden- Sydney but buried Bridgewater and Lynchburg by comfortable margins to wind up with second honors. Outstanding for the Jackets was Jack Lovett who ran the 220 in 21.8 seconds to establish a new Conference record. He also made a first in the 100-yard dash. Rawlings lived up to expectations with his usual Hue performance by win- ning Hrsts in the 440 and javelin and taking second in the low hurdles. Griek came out on top in the pole vault while Lewis finished first in the 880. Sawyer, Chappell, Gajewski, and Captain Kibler turned in their usual excellent perform- ances. Captain Kibler, Griek, and Gajewski wound up brilliant track careers in this last meet of the season. Although these athletic lights have been dimmed, other Cinder-path luminaries give promise of making the 1940 team as great as 1939 aggregation. Those receiving varsity letters were Lovett, Pisani, Rawlings, Kibler, Lewis, Sawyer, Gajewski, Chappell, Griek, and lVIcCormick. ALBERT JOHN PALISCAK - Assistant Coach . TENNIS The weather prophet was the major rival of Dr. VVebb's tennis team. Due to climatic conditions, only seven of the twelve scheduled matches were played. The Jacket racket-wielders were not able to brealc even in the seven completed matches but could boast of two victories over Lynchburg and a lone conquest over Bridgewater College. Losses were suffered at the hands of Drexel, Emory and Henry, Elon, and American University. Captain Hubbard led the team at No. I position and managed to overwhelm 3 of his 7 adversaries. Kaplan had the best record of the team with five wins and two defeats. Derowslci, Sanders, Corman, Compton, Bell, Luce, Cross, and Cramer performed well on the squad. Although there were a host of men out for the swimming team, most of them were from the freshman and sophomore ranks and have not had much experience in swim- ming. Through the skillful and capable coaching of Pat Bynum, the tanksters en- joyed their most profitable season in four years. Cramer, Logan and MCMahO11 in the free style, White and Meyers in the breast stroke, Hartley and Boykins in the back stroke, and Buckstel in diving, were the prom- ising performers whoze season was marked by a record of one win and three defeats, the victory being scored over Williani and Mary, fNor. It was only through their efforts that the Freshmen learned the school's songs and yells and were instilled with its true spirit. The student body should take their hats off to the cheerleaders, the unheralded artists who bring out the full tones of R.-Mfs fine school spirit. INTRAMURAL SPORTS WINNERS After a hotly contested intramural pigskin season, the Commons Club finally emerged the champions by defeating the Phi Delta Thetas 12-0 to win the intramural cup. The stars of the season for their respective teams were Rupe Lewis, W. Emory, Price, Iden, Cross, Stephens, Rawlings, Shefheld, and Pitt. By no means overshadowed by the football season, the basketball 'murals reached its climax when the Old Dorm defeated the New Dorm to win the coveted cup. The K. A.'s retained the Pan-Hellenic Cup by defeating the Lambda Chi's. The all 'mural ream consisted of Compton, Harrell, Miller, Richardson, and Montgomery. lI29l ATUIR Y 4 L E PRICE, Feature E dihar PHOTOGRAPHER AT LARGE Surprise at Dawn . . .
