WEBB HALL IN THE SPRING 63 CLASS HISTORY ERDANT and surely frightened were the Freshmen who rolled out of taxis at Main Hall that day in middle September, 1934. We were received with kind, friendly greet- ings, but somehow we envied our superiors who seemed ecstatic on seeing old friends again. How they all marveled at Main Hall. The Lounge—yes, it was beautiful with its white walls and columns. And then there was the realization that we were the first freshman class to enjoy a remodeled Main Hall. We lived through the storm of orientation week and matric- ulation. Our first real taste of Randolph-Macon tradition came to us at our class meeting with the Juniors. Laura Brent was elected to lead us. Campus life took on new meaning as we learned the significance of Even lore. Through the fall, class routine consumed most of our time. One by one the days were marked off on the calendar until we found ourselves on the train bound for home. After Christmas the terror of exams! Then Even Day was hanging over our heads. That had to be a success and we really made it one. A. A. Milne could not have wished Winnie the Pooh to come to life in a better way. Corky Dey was our Chair- man, and later she took the laurels, too, when we chose her as Sophomore Class President. May Day brought us more self-esteem when we proudly watched Vera Dickens and Hildegarde Engelhardt take their places in the court. Exams—better this time—and home for vacation. Returning as Sophomores we found it grand to see our old friends again. Already we were speaking of the incoming class as “‘little Freshmen,” and we waited impatiently for goat court. Along in November our first class play took the form of What Every Woman Ought to Know, written in rhyme and directed by Virginia Iglehart. It was a triumph in the opinion of all. After exams Sunday nights became times of suspense in East when the Etas began to choose from our number. The year slipped along with the round of campus activities—classes, fights, serenades, dances—until another Even Day came. This time Lee Myers was chairman. The Senator Bones and Buttons Circus came to town, and we had pink lemonade and hot dogs for lunch. On May Day, soon after, Laura Brent, Bessie Minge Cameron, Maxine Dennis, and Charlotte Granberry were the objects of our pride down in the Del!. Our devoted sister class left us at commencement. We were saddened and bewildered that now we were upperclassmen. The fall of 1936 was tinged with sorrow because of the loss of our beloved Dean, Dr. Pattillo. We were glad to have known such a character, even for two short years. With our Junior year ca me responsibility for our little sisters, the Freshmen. With Lee Myers guiding, we helped them through a trying period and instilled in them the Even spirit. It seemed strange to stand on the sidelines of fights that once brought us so much fun. Mr. Hadley, the new director of dramatics, helped in the production of our play, Baldheaded Row. Chnistmas vaca- tion, exams, and spring vacation came as a matter of course in this our most wonderful year thus far. In just a little while we would be Seniors. Elections were at hand. 64 How queer that we should become the leaders in the campus activities! Corky Dey was elected President of Student Government, and Dusty Kenyon, Judiciary Chairman. A num- ber were to leave our midst to become hall presidents. Betsy Barrett took over the Sun Dial, and Bessie Minge Cameron was chosen editor-in-chief of the HELIANTHUS. Six ladies of the court who tripped down the hill on May Day were of the class of 38—Laura Brent, Edith Beeland, Vera Dickens, Charlotte Granberry, Bessie Minge Cameron, and Betty Valliant. Late in the spring the noise of hammering came to the ears of East Hall residents and visitors of the “‘libe.”” A new science building was under construction. Our Senior Year! On the eastern edge of the campus stood the Fernando Wood Mar- tin Science Building, the pride of faculty, student body, and alumnae. Dignified Seniors, we donned our caps and gowns and began to sing the Pilgrim Chorus. Ella Milligan was chosen for the fourth season to ke a member of the All-Star Hockey team of Virginia. Hatchet party, reception, lantern parade, topsy-turvy day—all pointed out that our stay was short. Each vacation brought with it the idea that it was our last. Why could life here not go on forever? Spring could never have been more beautiful. Events followed each other in rapid suc- cession——May Day with Vera Dickens queen, Laura Brent maid-of-honor, and six of our number in the court—Greek Play, Elise Robertson taking the lead, assisted by Corkey Dey and Cleo Frizzell—election of ten seniors to Phi Beta Kappa—Junior-Senior breakfast, reveal- ing that several of our classmates were expecting two degrees very soon. All too quickly commencement week rolled around—baccalaureate sermon—Class Day when we passed under the alumnae arch into a new world—and finally—graduation. In tears we said goodbye, goodbye to our friends, to Randolph-Macon, to four wonderful years—that will ever live in our memory! 1936 Elizabeth Ashburn Anne Bobo Elizabeth Bradshaw Dorothy Davidson Frances Davis Frances Kendig Barbara Nash Anne O’ Keeffe Helen Sasscer Eugenia Scott Mary Alice Shackleton Janet Stimson Dorothy Swain Virginia Tawes Mary Mitchell Westall Sarah Gordon Wilson ETA SOCIETY Sponsor: Miss Mary STOKES 1938 Betsy Barrett Laura Brent Mary Calvert Dey Cleo Frizzell Charlotte Granberry Virginia Iglehart Mary Buskin Kenyon Nancy Kirkpatrick Ella Milligan Janet Mowrer Lee Myers Eleanor Quarles Elise Robertson Glennes Teter Spooner Tinsley Mary Lib Wilson 1940 Margaret Sue Adams Clara Cox Bell Clay Carter Helen Frink Jean Mayer Carolyn Pannill Bessie Peach Howard Perkinson Ethelinda Reynolds Frances Richards Virginia Rudulph Charlotte Selman Betty Taylor Sarah Thompson Dot Walton Becky White ETA is a society composed of sixteen members from each Even class, chosen because they have shown unusual spirit in helping to carry out the traditions of their class. 66 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President - - 2 - Z - ROBERTA RYMER Vice-President - - 2 - z = - JANE SMITH Secretary - - - - - - - SARAH BAGWELL Treasurer : Z : . 2 2 MarIAN BARTHOLOMEW SMITH BaRTHOLOMEW RYMER BaAGWELL e Helianthus. o inlee 4g — [ee , gi ' 4 ' Marien Abshire : ; : : Jane Breckenridge Adair aT 2 a! i ; Marguerite Taylor Anderson ye lt 4 { as a : Alice Elaine Anthony a i 2 4 Josephine Applewhite , Le = £ 3 Mary Carolyn Ardery ee ‘ agg : Sarah Lotta Bagwell | y r Virginia Carter Ball a y 4 : ) ] f a ag : Esta Barnhart oe, ae, : : | : co Marian Bartholomew : ; , i ng — ‘S : ; Betty Bock a Py a oe | _ Louise Moultrie Bowen : a 7 2 . ‘ Annie Wilson Brock a - . oP Sarah Jane Brooks : 3 eo. | — ‘la Betty Brown Z —_— Pai ee Mary Elizabeth Brown be 4 ’ Lf e 4 : : Katherine Blanks Butler e s : ; D. ee ; Gladys Virginia Chick x a i ; ; ae Elizabeth Clabaugh cE if = _F i. fa a | Alma Tilghman Cobbs P a ‘ a ’ ; 8 _ Cynthia Carter Cobbs Ae { : ee bl : Annie Virginia Cook bee coo : oe Pauline Corbett é , a “ Roberta Jean Corlett 68 Frances Craghead Jean Greenwood Craven Anne Meriwether Dashiell Mary Elizabeth Davenport Helen Gilmer Dickson Ruth Diehl Lucille Disharoon Mary Elizabeth Dodson Lillian Frances Dowling Isabella Person Drake Sarah Elizabeth Dudley Josephine Dunlap Margaret Dunton Polly DuVernet Sarah Esther Dyer Mary Elizabeth Ebert Ellen Elizabeth Edmondson Mary Carroll Engleman Charlotte Escande Mary Elizabeth Evans Mary Elizabeth Frey Alice Rangeley Fuqua Miriam Garber Christine Gewin 69 Clerimond Gilliam Josephine Eloise Givens Mary Wilson Glenn Patricia Gormly Ann Bolling Graham Virginia Elizabeth Hare Virginia Larew Harman Elizabeth Harris Mary Helen Harvey Lucy Cary Head Margaret Henderson May Eleanor Hillsman Dorothy Holton Mary Elizabeth Hopkins Natalie Wharton Hopkins Perre Coleman Hutton Frances Bishop Jefferson Dorothy Ann Jones Sarah Anna Jordan Vonda Keith Harriet Graff Kelley Sarah Lee King Virginia King Frances Knight Mary Beall Koogle Nell Lashley Grace Laylin Ruth Mary Lincoln Jane Lynda Ludwig Elizabeth Dearing Lynch Dorothy St. Clair McCoy Patsy McGregor Grace Ava McGuire Anne MclInnis Dorothy McManus Jeanne Elizabeth Manuel Lucie Ellen Mapp Eunice Pauline Martin Louise Martin Dorothy Jean Mees Chloe Miller Ellen Herbert Mitchell Beatrice Montgomery Elizabeth Moora Roy Stockhouse Moore Janie Moorman Morgan Helen Elizabeth Morrisette Dorothy Ogsbury 7) Mary Jane Peoples Harriet Isabelle Pettit Myrtle Marie Post Margaret Venable Price Virginia Rader Jean Louise Rankin Nora Wrenn Raysor Flavia Reed Elizabeth Caldwell Reid Margaret White Rice Dorothea Rudisill Roberta Rymer Lucile Green Scrivner Lovira Helen Shedd Ruby Virginia Shiley Anne Wallace Shropshire Catherine Silver Betty Smith Jane Tarleton Smith Dorothy Keen Stewart Katherine Stone Doris Norman Swain Virginia Sydnor Virginia Elizabeth Tate Mildred Keithley Taylor Margaret Pryor Truitt Isbell Turnbull Jean Adams Walker Celia Gray Walton Mary Houston White Mabel Whiteside Verna Whiteside Rebecca Williams Anna Marguerite Willingham Jean Ashby Wilson Mary Nelle Witte Edna Damaris Wood Marjorie Wriston. SPECIALIZE in FASHIONS SNAPPIEST ACCESSORIES ) CAMPUS CONVERTED INTO NEW YORK CITY Evens Reign for a Day March 14, 1938 With the Odds relegated to an inconspicuous posi- tion, Monday, March 14th, dawned bright and fair on an Even world at Randolph-Macon. At the gate the New York skyline stretched between the posts. A yel- low sign impressively announced “The City of New York.” The “‘fish’’ was made into Central Park, where debutantes aired their sophisticated pooches along white walkways; drunks leaned against telephone poles; nurses and policemen flirted on benches; and young men rowed vigorously across crystal lakes. Main Hall porch resembled the pier where a steamer had just docked with piles of open bags awaiting the customs inspectors. Main Hall dining room was trans- formed into Times Square. Enormous advertisements stretched around the room. Senior Parlor contained cages of ferocious animals. The post office boxes had become overnight the pigeon holes of an automat where students were served meats and vegetables as well as mail. In East Hall Radio City had replaced the dining room. The walls were lined with shop windows. Skaters glided over a frozen pond in the center of the room. In West Hall a replica of Harlem was found in the din- ing room. Dusky, seductive sirens leaned against the pillars and rolled their eyes at dark skinned gigolos strolling by. A real negro orchestra of three pieces provided genuine atmosphere. In New Hall the slums appeared, half-naked urchins shot marbles in the gutters. Drying wash flapped on lines between the crowded buildings. The Day Students’ Room was completely taken over by Coney Island, with beach, side-shows, shooting gallery, and ferris wheel. Across the hall the door to “Leon and Eddies’””’ stood invitingly open. In Webb Hall was located Grand Central Station. An imposing yellow cab stood in front, and a waiting red cap guarded the door. In the dining room was all the hustle and bustle of travel. A streamlined train appeared ready to make a trip to faraway places. R.-M. W. C. “SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS” Featured by Odds, April 13, 1938 All of Randolph-Macon attended the one-day show- ing of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” pre- sented on campus by the freshman class for Odd Day, April 13th. The picture opened in East Hall dining room, the palace of the vain queen. Colored light fell on the tables through the stained-glass windows. The queen stood glaring at the Magic Mirror. At the “fish” Prince Charming had found Snow White with the pigeons by the Wishing Well. Then Snow White fled to the palace balcony in New. Prince Charming stood in the garden below, singing to her. A real fountain played beneath the balcony. Snow White was forced to take refuge from the queen in Webb Hall—the forest at night. It was very dark and gloomy. The summer house was the cottage of the Dwarfs. Inside, Snow White was cleaning up, with all the little animals helping. Meanwhile, the Dwarfs were work- ing in their mine on Main front porch. Electric dia- monds sparkled overhead, and Doc and Dopey were testing cellophane gems. Over the log bridge on the front gateposts the Dwarfs marched sturdily home, Dopey trailing behind. The Day Students’ Room was the inside of the cabin where Snow White had set the table for supper. After supper, the Dwarfs had a party at the postoffice. Grumpy played the organ and Dopey performed on the drums, while Snow White danced with Doc and Happy. But in her evil-smelling den in West, the queen had changed herself into an old hag and was concocting a poison for Snow White. Shadows wavered on the walls, and spider webs covered the corners. The for- mula in the book of black magic included Bones and Buttons, who were already boiling in the big pot. Outside Senior Parlor the old hag cackled over her success. Inside, the Dwarfs were praying beside Snow White, in her death-like sleep. Finally they put her in a glass coffin in the forest— Main Dining Room—and here kept vigil with all the animals. But Prince Charming came to bring her back to life, and carry her to the Palace of Eternal Happi- ness in the Banquet Hall, where they lived happily ever after. VOGUE ON THE R.-M. W.C.
