'V DA' IZIIIZAILJ IN MEMORY OF ARLINE ALLEN, 1937 Tribute given by Anne Nelson, Senior President, in behalf of the class A life has gone out from amoug us-a life which was loved and cherished by all who knew it. The memory of Arline Allen will not soon facleg her passing leaves a vacancy which only time can partially fill. To most college classes it is given that they be graduated without the breaking of friendship's ties by irretrievable loss. Ours, however, was not granted this privilegeg and as a class we pay a tribute to the memory of a girl who gave of herself to us all. Arline came with us as a Freshman, and during her too short stay with us, gave many things we can never forget. She gave joy, with her ready-smile and greetings. She gave beauty. She gave willingness of service, she could be, and was, called upon for duties which she performed gladly, smilingly, and well. She gave sympathy and understanding, at home and at school, in her thought for others. A friend never found her too busy to listen, or to advise. She gave love, to her family, her friends, and her college. It is hard for us to realize that so vital a person has gone, leaving so many of us who feel very deeply our inadequacy to carry on in her place. It is strange to be forced, so young, to realize that nineteen years of strength and loveliness can be taken by death and that we should be left grieving. But could Arline speak to us now in words intelligible to us, she would probably say: For what is death but to stand in the wind, and to melt in the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free this breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand, and seek God unencumbered?,' And we, perhaps, would reply, as to a traveler who will forever be immortal in our hearts- Farewell to you, and the youth I have spent with you. It was but yesterday we met in a dream .... But now our sleep is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noon-tide is upon us, and our half-waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. lf, in the twilight of memory, we should meet once more, we shall speak again together. And if our hands should meet in another dream we shall build another tower to the sky. 78 lxrsfvxrxfxy-,A - '2'Vvw rv-vwvsnJf Arvv+ ---- A '- V'5 .fvNvs1sfvNf-vNfv'w--r---as-rua'-V--4N.rN'A-A 'vv ' SL G1 M N. Matriculation, orientation, bells, teachers, a jumble of ups and downs and lg arounds, with finally a slowly emerging order from chaos. m We discovered Dr. Jack, a newcomer like us, and were grateful to have him take a special interest in us. We discovered Pinky, who was chosen to lead us that first year, and Harriot who made our first Odd Day from a Comedy of Errors into All's Well That Ends Well. W, Somehow the days took a design and slipped by until we found May Day in upon us, and nearly burst with pride at seeing Bearden, Pinky and Betsy m Wadsworth in the dell from our class. Finally, in June, taking stock of our thi class we found in spite of the disorder at first, and in spite of being green we had thi the swimming championship, basketball title, baseball championship, and thanks W1 to Mira, the tennis cup. Who could ask for more? al al Uur second year we got here in the morning, ready to begin teaching the lin Freshmen. With l-larriot for president, we tore victoriously through fights and 1 Goat week, the lords of creation. Our Class Play, with Anne Nelson as chair- man, was the best of Sophomore originations. We took the world in our stride Ja on Odd Day, Slim in charge, and found Marian Carlisle, Micky Wilson, th' Slim, I-larriot, Pinky and Anne Nelson Gamma l3's. Knowledge, prestige, C5 and power were ours when our basketball and baseball teams again won the SC titles, and Mira recaptured the tennis cup. Blase and world weary, we watched lea Pinky, Tunstall, Mary Jane and Bearden ruflle down the hill on lVlay Day, H111 and decided R.-lVl. was too small for us, we would not Come back, We would till go abroad, to a university, get married. We knew all there was. Watching our Sister class graduate, we suffered our first doubts. Could there be something more? l-lad we missed anything? l-low could they care n so much? We were sympathetic to Freshmen, our sister class, inter- ested in them, more than goating them. With Slim to guide us, we slowly began to feel we belonged here, were an integral, if small part, of Randolph- Macon. We came to know and love our professors, our classmates, our college. The Junior play, written by Wimpie, and managed by Carlisle, was good and others thought so too. The year went too swiftly with parties, picnics, and college functions, and before we knew it, we were being elected to fill the leading offices on campus. l-larriot and Slim took over the Student Govern- ment, Carlisle the Sock and Buskin, Jeanne Allen and Connie Hall the HELIANTHUS--what a queer feeling to be receiving things! To be actually filling the places we'd always looked up to! At twilight in the fall of '36, with the late sun on the columns of West, we walked at last up the front steps-Seniors. How different to wear a cap and gown finally, and how hard. Margaret Bearden, our president, stopped off in Alabama, so we elected Anne Nelson to lead the Senior line. We buried the hatchet with the Junior class, and only on Topsy Turvey Day, fought with them-our last fight. Receptions and lantern parades, and friendships made with the faculty marked our last year. Dr. Jack was duly adopted into '37 as a real member, because he had loved us for four years, and we will love him always. Dr. French, our new Dean, and our trusted friend-why dicln't we find them sooner, so we could have told them how we felt? Ten Phi Beta Kappa's and ten Seniors in May Court, as well as Mary Janeas Queen and Tunstall as Maid of l-lonor, Martha Nan with the lead in the Greek play, Pinky, Anne McKinley, Anne Chilton Walker, Plummer, Carlisle and Anne Nelson engaged, and walking around the table at the Junior- Senior breakfast-all these and more are memories that will cling past the tears and pain of parting at Commencement, when we left Randolph-Macon, and all it has meant to us, friends, love, protection, and counsel, quietly beau- tiful on one afternoon in June. 81 1 4 : 1 fi Q f 5 5 1 fl A , I 1 w 1 1 K Y 5 5 l .VII r ll 1 1 r 1 4 1l 11 ,, H , , s2lgfL .-'ir HIV . 3 ,ww W, ,I + -N .5 il 4, ,, w!'!fQ li iw . ,I lm 'IRE 0 1 ,IQ I r 1 I w 1 i 1 y 1 .1 11, Y THE JUNIOR CLASS President - - ----- MARY LEONORA MYERS V ice-President - NANCY KIRKPATRICK Secretary - - BESS LONG ARDERY Treasurer - MARGARET HARWELL Cheer Leader FLORENCE PANNILL 83 1vvvg,A,gAA yjvgefiaffrffrmi Barbara Adams Bessie Addison Charlotte Ames Bess Long Ardery Anne Bailey Ida May Ball Betsy Barrett Edith Beeland Eleanor Benninghofen Edith Blackwell Mary Booker Virginia Branner Laura Brent Betty Bright Mary Elva Brown 84 fva my Vrxgfxlvvljr Y l W X lshlh-fsfvvvs V 'f V N-V 'f--'sf-wxf-an-fwfa - .
