Randolph-Macon Woman's College of the Past, Present and Future ll lflliltl is a tendency in the varied energetic life of thc Twentieth llentu ry for people to proceed without realizing clearly whence or whither. 'llhere surely must be some glorious goal in view, but few know what it is. Energy bids fair to defeat its own ends. Kinetic energy has its place, and a large one, but potential energy is not to be despised. Americans are especially prone to overemphasize hurry fmfl bustle. A pause, a period of serious reflection, would be a good thing for tl1e whole nation. We are no less conscious of tl1e power of a railroad engine when it is not in motion. And so, in our college life, lt is well once in a while to stop and reflect on our college, whence it 031116, where it is, .whither it is going. We have a vague idea that our C0llege is the best womanis college in the South, that it compares very favorably with those of the whole country 5 but we do not think often of what these facts mean, of what has led to the realization of them, and What is expected to develop from them. In the first place, we should appreciate our youth and get encour- agement therefrom. lt was just in 1893 that Randolph-Macon NVo- N12111's College was cstabli shed. lf our growth in the future is to measure up to the standard of the past, there will practically be nollimit to it. Another thing worthy of note is that the college was practically the conception of one man, and that man W. W. Smith, our President, and tl1e Chancellor of the Randolph-Macon System of Education-our counsellor and friend, our elder brother, participator in our joys, com- forter in our sorrows. llc never fails us, is untiring in his efforts for our advancement. flllvcry true Randoliwh-Macon girl. has a love in her heart for llr. Smith, and a feeling of profound gratitude to him. And so, as a crystallization of his thoughts, the college was estab- llSl1ed. At his instigation, and with the thorough approval of the people 'lf llynchburg, it was built here.
