Karen's Sojourn To South America B RAZ I L 'Cb oflo On June 26, 1968, I left New York City on board a plane of American students bound for Brazil. W-hen I arrived in Rio de Janeiro, I was met by my new mother and father, my sister, Patricia, and my cousin, Laura. As we drove to my new home, l was able to catch my first glimpse of the city. Rio is a city with a population of slightly more than four million people and it is acclaimed as the most beautiful city in the world. The streets are filled with people, all enjoying themselves, with no fear of chastisement if they sing or embrace a friend after a long separation. In my home we ate breakfast whenever we got np, which was usually about ten o'cloch. A light launche or snack was eaten about one p.m. It consisted of hot chocolate or a hot fudge sundae. A typical Brazilian dinner was served at eight o'cloch each night. My family had a chauffeur, a maid that lived in and had a salary of twenty-five dollars a month, and four maids that came in only on certain days of the week. I wish everyone could have the wonderful experience of being accepted not as a foreigner but as a native Brazilian. Karen Stahley Jenny This year Randolph was fortit- nate to hott Jenny Lazo, our exchange :tadent from Lima, Peru. Her three Jhort monthx here were spent with the Alfred Hill family .of Eart Randolph. The exchange was made in con- nection with Karen Stahleyir visit to Brazil last Jammer. ...ws-............,.. 9' SEATED: Melvin Lindquist, Sentinel, Calvin Fleisch- mann, Reporter, Tom Shields, Treasurer, Tim Shields, President, Michael Frink, Vice President: Russ Riddell, Secretary, ROW ONE: Howard Walters, David Boyer, Bradley Brown, Joyce Congdon, 'Tom Stone, Susanne Boyer, Valerie Hensel, Rhonda Rolfe, ROW TWO: Ron!
