We realize with gratitude all the wonderful things which she has taught us and know that her teaching has been an inspiration to many. Her Warm humor and sincere friendliness will always be remembered by her students. Unless an individual can adapt to changing times, he will become outmoded and lose his usefulness. The development of research, science and technology mandates more and better education for each individual. Competencies to meet these changes will provide you with the opportunities for success. Be influenced by that which is wise rather than by pressures. Bold imaginee'r'ing, careful planning, persistent pursuing and faith in God will guide you. Sincerely, 27. gglw... James F. On this page, we wish to recognize a person who, for the past fourteen years, has helped greatly with the Hilltop. As the faculty advisor for the Hilltop, Mr. Eskeli has worked untiringly behind the scenes to make our yearbook the fine book it is. His guidance and assistance have been invaluable to us and he has always been available to give us advice. His thoughts and ideas have enriched our yearbook for many years. It is for these reasons that we dedicate this portion of the 1964 Hilltop to Mr. Eskeli. We grave and reverend Seniors, Who thought the years so slow We spent in acquisition Of things we had to know, Are filled with wild excitement, At last the goal is won. We gaze in admiration Upon the work we've done. The courses we have taken, The stiff exams we've passed Would indicate intelligence, With wonder we're aghast. The faculty, they tell us, Are equally surprised, For when they found us passing They scarce believed their eyes. Perhaps it was their wisdom That dragged us up the grade, And so we're saying, Thank you, For good advice and aid. How often we have counted The time till holidays, And wished the hours were shorter In education's ways! But now we may discover What old folks say is true: Life's working day is lengthy, And holidays are few. Still armed with high endeavor We'll meet fate with a smile And strive with heart undaunted, Remembering the while That life, despite misfortune, ls but adventure gay, And Death's a friend that gives us A last long holiday s .K N fy .W fm A h 'sf H 5:5515-' 9- 'lfiil 'x 'E wfi 13: 9,5 F Q -Ekixfltzg ,digg .Ud.fufA0C5. OUR EXCHANGE MR. CLIFFORD BUNFORD from Cardiff, Wales In writing this short appreciation of my teaching experience -at Randolph Central school, I would like to pay thanks to all the Faculty and Student Body who have contributed towards making my stay a happy one. I have found the American system stimulating and edifying, and it has corrected many erroneous impres- sions I had hitherto entertained towards American edu- cation. ,Randolph School has impressed me by its sin- cerity in trying to provide the very best for its pupils, by the dedication and industry of its teachers, and the enthusiasm and involvement of everyone in school ac- tivities. In the past eight months I have developed a deep respect for the musical talent of the school, both in the Choral and instrumental field. I have learned a great deal about rehearsal techniques in the daily choral meetings, and I apologize to anyone who may have misinterpreted my impatience as exasperation. I sometimes work on the premise that impatience, and not patience, is the first requisite for teaching! I apolo- gize also if my taste and judgement have been at variance with th-e tradition of the school music pro- gramme, but it is difficult to change one's outlook overnight. However, I am grateful to the students for stoically accepting my strictures and also my demands with so little complaint, a fact which speaks volumes for their patience and good nature. I shall leave Ran- dolph a wiser teacher and a humbler person. Outside the classroom, the gaiety of the students has been infectious and I shall miss the informal and relax-ed rapport between teacher and pupil. Other things I shall miss are the cheerleaders, Assembly programmes, and the glorious Autumnal colours in the fall. Things I shall not miss, however, are tuna fish, the snow and Hall duties. Thank you Randolph, for 'a rewarding and memor- abl-e year in my career. TEACHERS Mr. Swonson's home in Wales MR. ROGER SWANSON from Randolph, New York I, my wife Anne Belle, and my daughters, Erika, Kirsten, and Katrin arrived in the United Kingdom aboard the SS United States on August 22, 1963. We spent two days in London before traveling to Cardiff, Wales which was to by my teaching situation for the coming school year. Upon arriving in Cardiff, Mrs. Bunford, the wife of my counterpart, met us at the depot and drove us to our new home in the village of Machen. As you can see from the above picture, our home was very quaint and impressive. We had only one neighbor, a farmer, who lived about a quarter of a mile up the lane. We enjoyed the beautiful Welsh countryside that surrounded us, but found the weather to be extremely wet and damp. In fact so damp, that none of us could adjust to the climate completely. My second daughter seemed to physically rebel the most and due to her asthmatic bronchial condition, we made the de- cision of having the family return to Randolph on January 29, 1964 aboard the Queen Elizabeth. I then moved closer to my school, The boys school in which I teach has about 600 pupils. It is called a Grammar School and teaches mainly the academic subjectsg although they do have courses in woodworking and shop. I find that one cannot compare the educational systems of the two countries. Rather one must keep in mind that we are two countries and have different objectives and aims. I find the Welsh student to be rather a rote trained individual than a thinking machine. We United States to give more re- young' people than they do here. are inclined in the sponsibilities to our Tradition here seems to make precedent over everything else. It is good to have traditions but, of course, to :change becomes a stumbling block. Music in this school is mostly of a theoretical na- ture. They form a chorus for the sole purpose of pro- ducing an Easter concert then the group automatically disbands. Emphasis is slowly being placed on the value of performance and the realization that the theory end belongs to the person who is going to be- come a professional. This has been a most difficult experience, but as the days slowly pass, I find that it will undoubtedly be one of my most worthwhile endeavors. To adjust, readjust, and such can cause quite an emotional up- heaval in one's system. When one learns to accept things as they are, and improve upon that aspect of the situation, one can indeed widen his scope and become a much more humble and respectful person of all that surrounds him. The local chapter of the F.F.A. was organized and chartered on February l4, l939, although the teach- ing of Agriculture in the Randolph Central School system dates as far back as 1917. At that time Mr. Underwood was the local teacher of Agriculture and A. K. Getman was the state advisor. The Future Farmers take part in many activities dur- ing the year. Some of these are as follows: dairy judg- ing tours, Rally Day, and the county fair. While par- ticipating in these activities we try to fulfill the pur- poses of the F.F.A. In the center is a house, which represents a home where there is truth, love, security, and faith. This home is supported by two hands suggesting that tu- ture homes ot America are in the hands of its youth. The hand on the right rep- resents the husband, father, or brother in the home. The hand on the left is the wife, mother, or sister. Both hands work together to fos- ter and support strong homes tomorrow. My D OUR EXCHANGE TINA LARA IN A NATIVE COSTUME THE PHILIPPINES My country, the Philippines, is a group of about 7,107 islands in 'the Pacific Ocean, 600 miles from the coast of China, and approximately 9,000 miles away from the United States. The population is 28W million, and the total land area is about equal to that of New Mexico. Manila is the largest city and Quezon City is the capital of the republic. The Philippines is a country where important stages of history have been somehow arrested and preserved. In the southern part of the island can be found a picture of the 15th century: in the majority of the low- lands, most people live like those of the 19th century: and in the City of Manila and its suburbs, the 20th century prevails. The Philippines is a democratic republic, an independent country since 1946, with 62 provinces and 39 cities. Provinces are divided into towns or municipal districts, which are in turn subdivided into barrios or vil- lages. The present Philippine constitution is patterned after that of the United States. The executive head is the president, the head of the prov- ince is the governor, and thc head of the town is the mayor. There are 87 native dialects with Tagalog as the national language, but English and Spanish are widely spoken. The Filipinos are predomi- nantly Malays, with a mixture of foreign bloods like Spanish, Chinese. Indonesian, etc. Most Filipinos have brown complexion, dark-haired, and are short. The common religion is Catholic, which consists of about 85 percent of the population. In the province, most people make a living by farming, fishing, or planting, but since we lack machinery, all of these are done by hand. In the city, most people are either employed or have a business of their own. The main industries of the Philippines are rice, sugar, hemp, coconuts, mines, embroideries, and pineapples. The products we import are machinery, transport equipments, dairy products, textiles, etc. Automobiles, televisions, and refrigerators are still consid- crered a luxury in the Philippines, because we have to import them, so when it gets there, it will be so expensive. For recreation, people would either go swimming, go outing, or mountain climbing, since we only have two seasons: the rainy season which is from June to October, and the dry season, from November to May. The avverage temperature is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and it becomes slightly lower in December and January, but not cold enough to make us wear heavy clothes nor make it snow. For a growing nation, I can say that the Philippines has already made much progress in self-government which the Americans established as part of our independence, in the economic way of life, and in educa- tion. There are many schools and universities in the Philippines now and almost every student continues studying after graduating from high school, so there are lots of hope for us to have a well-developed country in the years to come. As for now, unemployment is still a problem be- cause of too great a population, but our president has plans to solve it. The Philippines owe much to the Americans, such as our freedom, most of our progress, and our democratic form of government, and we are thankful to the United States of America for all of these. STUDENT - TINA Tina and her American family SEATED: Bart, Tino, Kathy, STANDING: Mrs. Lindquist, Carolyn, Mr. Lindquist. MY LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES I left the Philippines on August 29, 1963, one day after my 17th birthday. I came by plane, together with other Philippine students, and those from Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaya. While on the way to the United States, we had several stop-overs in Guam, Wake Is- land, and Hawaii. From Hawaii, we flew to California, where we were given a three-day rest at Stanford University. While we were there, we had a program in which most of us showed our native dances and costumes. On the third day, we fiew to Chicago, Illinois, and then to Buffalo where I first saw my foster family, who were patiently waiting for me. Words can never tell how happy I was to see them, and because of so much happiness, I cried and embraced each of them. Then they took me to my one year American home, which is a pretty white house. On September 3, 1963, I rode the school bus with my foster brother and sisters, and met some other students who rode with us. After quite a long while, my foster sister pointed out our school to me, which is very large in comparison to the school I attended in the Philippines. When I entered, I was quite nervous, because it looked even larger on the inside than the outside. At first I had a difficult time finding where my rooms were, because in my former school, we never transfered. I had to adjust to my new environment because of the difference. We only have 10 years of studying, but we have 8 subjects to take everyday. The morning session is from 7:30 A.M.-12:00 noon. Then we go home for lunch, riding in a public bus or jeep. We have a IV2 hour break at noon. The school day ends at 3:30 P.M. Everything in school is taught in English, but since we don't speak it at home, we speak slower than Americans do. The students' relation toward teachers and elders is a bit more formal than is that of teachers and students here. We call them either sir or mam. Our school is a Catholic school, and we have no school dances. We do not have seasonal games, except for intramural basketball gmes. Instead of play- ing sports, boys are taught the Philippine Military training, and girls do not play basketball nor socker, but learn folk dances for our school programs, and some calisthetics. Meanwhile, as I got to know my foster family better, I felt that there wasn't very much difference between my Filipino family and my Ameri- can family. I feel very much at home with my foster family, and I enjoy doing lots of things with my brother and sisters. I came from a rather large family, and my own father is a real estate businessman and a poultry farmer. My mother is a housewife. I had an AFS foster sister from Minnesota, U. S. A., who lived with us in the Philippines, and my parents are very active concerning the AFS program. Our food is not very different from American food, except for rice, which is our staple food. We also have more seafoods, and often times cook our vegetables. Of course I like American foods so much, and I love the way you prepare it too. Being' an AFS student is really a very wonderful and educational experience for young boys and girls. It doesn't only help youngsters do something for peace and understanding, but they also learn to love foreign families and friends that they make while staying in a place away from home. I thank all those people who have been helping expand the AFS organization because it's really a big help for foreign relation- ship. l'll never forget Randolph Central School, the friends I made in the western part of New York, and your kindness and hospitality. l'll always pray that I may be given another chance to come back, and also for you to be able to visit us someday in the Philippines, Now, where are all the girls? The Randolph Cardinals began the season ranking among the top schools in the area. In their first game the Cards justified this standing by winning' 7 to 1, holding Allegany scoreless until the final inning. The opposing team picked up its only run on a timing error by Randolph. The Cardinals continued to bring in winning scores throughout the season. In their second game they topped Portville 5 to 2. Due to the earnest pitching effort by Ozzie Schultz, the Cards had an easy win. Schultz struck out 10 players 'and walked 2-a fine record for' any pitcher. In Randolph's third game Franklinville was defeated 5-3. In the first three innings the Randolph club built a 5-0 lead over the Frankies. Henry Schobey struck out seven and walked three, racking up his second win. A nine-run streak in the final inning left the score 16-1 in the Card's fourth game. Ozzie Schultz kept the opposing team's score to o-ne run by striking out seven and walking only two. Lanny Sheffield's homer and Hubbard's home run, two triples, and a single gave the team their victory. This game saw every Randolph player score. Randolph Central's baseballers tightened their grip on the lead in the Class B League again in their fifth game by defeating Fran-klinville 8-5. Trailing 5-3, Randolph pulled out the important win with 5 runs in the last of the sixth. The Cards scored on 6 hits, a two-run double, singles, two stolen bases, and a pair of fielders' choice plays. Rand-olph clinched its sixth straight win by defeating Cattaraugus 9-2 on a two-run single by Randy Luce and John West when the bases were loaded. In the sixth inning the Cards added their winning run on a single by Cowen. Doug Cowen, West, and Schultz led the attack with two singles apiece. Randolph's seventh game with Allegany resulted in 'a shut out, 4-0, winning the county 'B' crown. After two scoreless innings Randolph took a 1-0 edge in the third inning. The Cards sewed up the championship with three runs in the last of the sixth inning. Gordon Schultz went all the way for the win, striking out 12, walking 7 and limiting Allegany to 5 singles. Having won the League Championship in their seventh game, the Randolph Cardinals triumphantly fin- ished the season undefeated. In this game they topped Portville 12-8.
