We hope that this book, each time you open its covers, will bring back many happy and fondly cherished memories of your high school years, and that you Will renew forgotten acquaintances and recall old friends each time you turn its pages. If the Hilltop accomplishes these things, then it is fulfilling that purpose for which it Was intended - to preserve your high school years in word and picture that you may never forget these very important and very precious years of your life. - K. G. Randolph Central School District was saddened by the sudden death on November 27, 1961, of Mr. Kenneth E. Gibbin, district super- intendent of Cattaraugus County Third Super- visory District. Death was attributed to a heart attack. During Mr. Gibbin's entire professional career, he was dedicated to the cause of edu- cation. Since moving to East Randolph in 1941, he was particularly interested in the welfare of the schools in our local area. His chief concern was the enlargement of educa- tional opportunity for all pupils of Randolph and vicinity. He continually fought for the elevation of standards, and the securing of sufficient state aid to make this goal possible. He was a devoted husband and father, and a loyal friend. He participated in community affairs insofar as his time permitted. He will be greatly missed by all those who knewihim. 4 MEMORIAL We present this publication, that may remain a lasting tribute to the name of Lloyd Edward Post, who died May 27, 1957, friend and classmate, too soon tragically parted from us and those who loved him. It is not growing like a tree In bulk, doth make Man better beg Or standing long an oak, three hundred year, To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sereg A lily of a day Is fairer far in May, Although it fall and die that night- It was the plant and flower of Light. In small proportions we just beauties see 3 And in short measures life may perfect be. DEDICATICJ 5 Mr. Stephens, We, the Senior Class of 1962 wish to say thank you for the countless ways in which you have served asa guiding light throughout our high school years. Thank you for the many hours you spent in Working on our class projects, thank you for keeping us in line when We threatened to become too complacent and began to let studies or obligations slipg thank you for being a person of foundless energy and humor and one upon on Whom we could always depend. It seems that a hundred thank yous would be inadequate payment for all that we owe you, so instead, let us put our grat- itude in the form of a gesture. To express our very sincere and heart-felt thanks, we dedicate to you, Mr. Stephens, this Hilltop for 1962. Very gratefully yours, , The Senior Class of 1962 -K. G. LEFT T0 RIGHT: Leon Carr, Raymond Van Wie, Mrs. Hillard, Mrs. Palmer PRNCIPAUS MESSAGE Mr. Milton Horak, Principal Members of the Class of 1962: In the years ahead these pages Will remind you of many happy hours spent in Randolph Central School. They will bring back memories of classmates with whom you shared the thrill of learning, the agonies of examinations, the excitement of athletic contests and the relaxations of common recreations. Furthermore, they will recall for you the encouragement given by your teachers when it was most needed, the lasting friendships you made among fellow students and the many little episodes that happened during'never-to-be-forgotten years. You will be reminded of a life for which you will often yearn but which you will never again be able to duplicate. As you review these pages in future years, may many of the hopes and dreams of your high school days have been fulfilled. May you ever feel that the educational experience you received here contributed to a useful, happier personal life and a better, more peaceful world. Milton R. It is situated in the northwestern part of Argentina, where the climate is warm and damp. Although we have four seasons, we never have any snow. My city has more than 300,000 inhabitants, and the population of my province is 808,000. Its economy is principally agriculture. It has a few industries, especially the making of sugar which is very 'important in its economy. My country is well known for its production of wheat and cattle, especially sheep and bovines. The government of Argentina is a repre- sentative democracy. very much like the govern- 'ment of the United States except that it is a little more socialistic. Life in Argentina is quite different from life here. We are still an under-developed nation, and a great part of our population is poor. How- ever, the number of middle-class families is begin- ning to rise. Our social life differs too. It is more formal. especially between teen-agers. I attend a public school which prepares its pupils for the study of law or medicine. This school is not a mixed oneg it is only for boys. We do not have school buses. so we use public buses or trams, which we still use in my city, bicycles. or our own feet. We attend school from eight in the morning to twelve-thirty at noon. In my school each year, we must' take eleven subjects, which we don't choose. Of course. we don't have all the subjects every dayg we take each of them three or four times a week, six subjects a day. The system which the teachers use for teaching is quite different, too. We don't have many tests, but we are supposed to study a few pages of a book every day, and the teacher calls four or five students to the front of the class to tell what they have learned. This is more diffi- cult than the method you use, for you need to study five or six subjects every day. We don't use any uniform in school, but we must wear a tie and it isn't recommended to go to school without a dress suit. Because the seasons are changed in the Southern hemisphere, there. where July is winter, our school year is from March to November. My family which is an average middle-class Argentine family, includes my parents and my two younger sisters. My father works for the Chemical Company which makes and sells ferti- lizers and other chemical products. My mother is a housewife. Our main food is meat, which we eat at least once a day. In Argentina our most im- portant meal is lunch, which we have when we return from school at 12:45. Our dinner is a big meal, toog we have dinner usually between 8:30 and 9:30 at night. Our breakfast usually consists of' coffee and milk and one or two slices of bread. As I said before. there is never any snow in the region of Argentina from which I come, so I have found a lot of fun with all the snow you have here Ceven when I found it pretty coldl. of bread. i I am glad that the American Field Service chose me as the exchange student to come to Randolph. I think I have made a lot of friends in 'Randolph and western New York, and I hope this friendship will last for a long time. As the new methods of transportation have made the world smaller. I'll be glad if some of my American friends would stop by some day to visit my country. I also would like to come back here some day. - P.G. 83 LEADERSHIP AT RANDOLPH CENTRAL SCHOOL SENIOR CLASS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY President -P ..................... BON AVENTURE For the past few years the University of St. Bonaventure, in cooperation with the Cat- taraugus County Principals Association, has offered an eight Week seminar in the Arts and Sciences for high school seniors. These lectures are offered in the hope that they will -give college bound seniors a preview of college life and the lecture methods which will be encountered. Each participating school is allowed to send 421 of the total membership of the junior and senior classes but only seniors are eligible. Selection of these students was based on C11 in- terest in a four year college course, C23 academic achievement, 135 intellectual ability. The students selected this year Were: Paul Casler, Mary Crissey, Gail Houghton, Lola Shenefiel, Patrick Smith, and Sara Thrasher. Mary Mathews and Emily Wade were chosen as alternates. 88 MODEL UNITED NATIONS Assuming the roles of delegates to the United Nations twice this year, a number of our students have participated in the Model United Nations program. This program is spon- sored by various colleges in the area and offers the participating students a chance to debate the international problems of the day and gain an understanding of the problems which shadow their future.
