Everyone was glad to be back in the swing of things but still we all dreaded the days of routine ahead. Then, after everyone had greeted old friends and been as- signed to new classes, it was time to settle down to another year of school. ' First came the nightly homework assignments - how could anyone forget them? Then suddenly we were in the midst of the football season and although every Saturday afternoon seemed to be either windy or rainy the Randolph fans could be seen down on the R.C.S. field, cheering their hearts out for our boys. Autumn turned to winter and the sports, basketball and wrestling. Again, the Randolph fans turned out to support their teams throughout one of the most successful seasons Randolph has had in several years. Mingled with all this were the Junior and Senior Plays, numerous record hops, ,and a wonderful, whirl- wind, Christmas season. Then came midyear exams and we had half the year behind us. All of a sudden it was spring and baseball season was here. Along with this came spring vacation and the long-awaited Sen- ior trip to Washington. Finally June came in view and just in the nick of time, when we had lost all hope of ever making it through this school year. Students were cramming for final exams and everyone was mak- ing plans for summer vacations. Then at last it came-prom time and graduation. As the confusion and excitement of Commencement ended we looked back over another wonderful year, and one we will always remember. KDG DEDICATIO Mrs. Elizabeth Charles Dear Mrs. Charles, The Senior Class of 1961 Wishes to express its appreciation to you for all the help you have given us over the past six yearsg for all the time you have spent and the work you have done in promoting our class projects. Since our first year of Junior High, you have shouldered most of the burden of guiding our classg and with your help we have come successfully through our high school years. We earned the money for our Washington trip which was the climax to our Senior year. Words alone cannot express our gratitude to you for all you have done, and so we have chosen the way We thought most appropri- ate which is to dedicate this year's Hilltop to you. For all this, Mrs. Charles, We extend our most sincere thanks. Very gratefully yours, The Senior Class of 1961 ADMINISTRATIO GUY L. MATHEWS Supervising Principal MILTON R. HORAK Secondary Principal BCDARD OF EDLICATIO Left to Right: Harold Lindquist, Orson See, Sigmund Senn, Russell Young, President Nh. Left to Right: Leon Carr, Raymond VanWie, Mrs. Hillard, Mrs. Palmer. FRGM CDUR PRINCIPAL Mr. Milton Horak, Principal Members of the Class of '61: My very best Wishes to all of you as you lift anchor to embark on life's voyage. Along the way you will undoubtedly find rocky shoals, stormy weather and hidden dangers. Your ability to steer your ship safely will determine how successful and happy you will be. We believe the training and inspiration you have received at Randolph Central School will enable you to proceed with confidence. May the blessings of God be ever upon you and may all your efforts be crowned with a full measure of success. Sincerely yours, Milton R. Horak ! BONAVENTURE St. Bonaventure University, in cooperation with the Cattaraugus County Principal's As- sociation, sponsored a seminar for college-ori- ented high school students. The lectures were conducted on the college level and were delivered by the faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University. The objectives of the program included Q15 to allow the students an opportunity to ex- perience the lecture method of instruction as used in colleges and universitiesg Q23 to present material in various subject matter areas that would not normally be covered in high school courses, C33 to provide an educa- tional service to the local community. It is hoped that the following results will be realized: CU better oriented and acclimated students for collegeg C25 more interest at the University level, C33 greater service to area people. Our selection of students was based upon the following criteria C15 strong college ori- ented student CZJ interest in a four-year col- lege program C35 be a Junior or Senior C41 scholastic achievement C51 intellectual ability, and Q65 desire. It is planned that next year attendance at these seminars will earn the participants col- lege credit. But what about the curriculum, the classes, the assignments, the homework, the examinations, and the many other facets that make up the academic program. Are we to leave these to memory? Are we to overlook the struggles, the disappointments, the knowledge, the successes and the failures of students in the programs they chose to be the basic foundation on which to build their lives? I think not. This senior class entered seventh grade the year I came to Randolph Central School. What things make up the total scholastic program? Little seventh gra- dersg how lost and confused seventh graders are. They have no choice of subjects, are overwhelmed by the pace of the courses, and are convinced the teachers get to- gether and plan long assignments, all of which are given on the same day. You have scheduled study halls peri- ods now. Or are they rest periods? On to eighth grade -a continuation of spelling and grammar, United States history, instead of New York history, and the addition of science to your program. Will you remem- ber the interviews with me at the end of eighth grade? You make your decisions and choose your programs. There are so many courses required. You must take four years of English, four years of history, one year of mathematics, one and one-half years of science, earn three units in a major field, complete enough units to graduate, and pass Physical Education for four years. There are many electives and ten major sequences. The class of 1961 has used all of the major fields. On grad- uation night, there will be a student who receives his diploma because he majored in Art, another for a major in Music, another for a major in Agriculture, and so on through French, Latin, Mathematics, Science, Industrial Arts, Homemaking, and Business. Here, at the end of eighth grade, you worry about your examinations and your marks. Some schedules for ninth grade must be changed because of failing marks. For others, there is elation because you pass. Ninth grade: This is the place you try to drop the elective courses that you find difficult. But you can't drop them so easily now. Graduation requirements have been raised to 18 units. You put your hands and minds to work in shop, mathematics, languageg in all courses. Have you changed your mind on what you should use for a major sequence? Some have. The 92 sophomore year brings many things: your first sched- uled lab periods, your toughest history course thus far, your first real notice that some classmates are quitting school to go to work, boys making better grades in geometry than girlsg reaffirmation of goals, and Re- gents examinations. Next year you will be Seniors. What has your record been? Are you proud of your program and your marks? There is no junior who has not asked himself these questions. You're Seniors now. It isn't completely over but it's drawing steadily to a close. For those of you who apply to college, you'll know the worth of your high school education first. It is you who will receive the letters of acceptance or rejection from colleges. The greatest compliment to your determination, hard work, program, teachers, parents, and, to you, is the letter from the college that states-We have selected you to be a member of our next year's Freshmen class. For those of you who plan to enter an occupation immediate- ly upon graduation, you will know the value of your diploma when the personnel manager tells you to report for work, the service you enter classifies you, or, if a girl, you marry. This is your academic program. Each year it grows to meet the needs of the students. Have you Seniors thought about the changes that have occurred since you entered seventh grade? 411 The first major change was adding another period without lengthening the school day. This enabled students to elect four additional courses during the four year program. 421 Three additional periods of spelling each week were added to seventh and eighth grade. 431 Intermediate Algebra was cut to one semester and Advanced Algebra was added to our mathematics sequence. 441 Every- one must complete one year of mathematics in high school. 451 Graduation requirements were raised to 18 units. 465 Four years of history are required in- stead of three. 47 J A comprehensive testing program was established. 483 An additional lab period was added to Physics. 495 Certain students begin Elemen- tary Algebra in the middle of eighth grade. 4101 Agri- cultural Mechanics I and II have been added to our program, and 4115 Wood Shop, Metal Shop, Electrical Shop, Agriculture III and IV, and Homemaking III have been cut from two periods a day to one period without losing credit for the students. I know you have gained much from your total school program. I hope your academic background provides you with the scholastic assets necessary to make your goal in life a reality. Kenneth W.
