EDUCATION FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL CHILD In September 1957, we inaugurated in Ran- dolph a class for mentally retarded children. This class is now in its third year and is taught by Mrs. Dorothy Dooley. In September 1958, a second class Was inau- gurated in the High School building making it possible to carry on the complete program for the retarded learner. This class is now under the direction of Mr. Lawrence Bourne, a recent graduate of Geneseo State Teachers' College. The objective of this class is for children of low abil- ity to have the opportunity to work in a class where they can cover material within their -scope and background. Every effort is made to prepare these students in so far as possible to become use- ful citizens when they finally leave our school. In September 1958 an experimental program was initiated for Superior learners. This pro- gram is now in its second year, and is serving some 39 students from Grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. Miss Ann Tucker is the teacher and is Working in the Language Arts and Science field on a half- day basis with each group. The chief purpose is to provide enrichment material and to improve the study habits of ca- pable people so that they may become outstand- ing students. At the present time there is a definite challenge to all schools to provide special learning experiences for the rapid learning student. Just this winter a High School program is beginning in Cattaraugus County from the University of St. Bonaventure. Six of our High School students will be participating. Our Board of Education has been farsighted in recognizing the importance of improving the educational opportunities for all students who attend our school. 71 Ab-V' Z ':.w.:.:.b.a:-.:.:-.b.s.:.:.r. 21'-R155EEEEESEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE 85, NS smxmmm Fqfirammmmazmmmmmmmra E-ghghugg mgous-4 .M,,mr-mi? mm:-1'?'i'r-1:-unvnrfnr-nm famrarara E3.?s 5's'52.' The lectures were conduct- ed on the college level and were delivered by the faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University. The objectives of the program included Q15 to allow the students an opportunity to experience the lecture method of instruction as used in col- leges and universities, C25 to present material in various subject matter areas that would not normally be covered in high school courses, C35 to provide an educational service to the local community. I It is hoped that the following results will be realized: C13 better oriented and acclimated stu- dents for college, Q25 more interest at the Univer- sity level, C35 greater service to area people. Our selection of students was based upon the following criteria C15 strong college oriented student 423 interest in a four year college pro- gram f3J be a Junior or Senior Q45 scholastic achievement C53 intellectual ability, and C65 desire. -KC- 81 FOREIG EXCHANGE STUDE T l, gf il My home is in Kobe, Japan, which is a large city of about a million in population. This city is known as an International seaport. As most of the people do not have cars, busses, taxis and street cars are the means of transportation we use. Also bicycles and motorcycles are used very widely. Our milkman and bread man use the bicycle, and the laundry man uses a motorcycle. When we go to the business centers, we use taxis, busses and street cars. We live in a six - room house which includes a kitchen, dining room, living room, bedrooms and bath. As our furniture is not as large as yours, each one of these rooms is smaller than yours. We have electricity and gas which are the same as yours. As we Japanese love plain beauty, we do not paint our walls inside, nor the outside of the houses as colorfully as you do. Usually our walls are white or light brown inside, and the outside of our houses is natural wood or cement. I attend an all girl private school in Kobe. We do not have school busses, so we use public busses, street cars, or our own feet. About 1300 girls attend my school. Our building includes four stories, the first floor is used for elementary grades, the second for Junior High, the third for Senior High, and the fourth is for a two-year college. My school also has an international school which girls from foreign countries attend. We do not have a cafeteria. Students bring their own lunches, and milk and sweet rolls are served for those who want them. We have school uniforms which are 'navy blue serge skirts and jackets, white blouses, navy blue beret and coats for winter. For summer we wear a white blouse with light blue cotton skirt and a hat. Our book bags are also part of our uniforms. My family is an average Japanese family including my parents and two sisters, 19 and 21 years of age. My father works in the office of the Osaka Shipping Company. This company handles the cargo shipped all over the world. They have a branch in New York City. 82 'fs 5 'A 5 A My mother is a housewife, but most of our housework is done by our maid. She comes in every day. Our main foods are rice with fish, eggs, vegetables and meat. Rice is for the same purpose as your bread. We love dairy products and fruit. To eat these foods my family uses chopsticks when they are prepared in Japanese style, and silverware for Western style foods. My family religion is Buddhist. In East Randolph I attend the East Randolph Methodist Church, and sing in the choir every Sunday. The sanctuary has been re- modeled since I came here and I have been very much interested in the progress made in the Church. The younger Japanese prefer Western clothes be- cause they are more comfortable. Most of the older people still wear Japanese clothes all the time. My mother prefers to wear a Kimono. On special occasions such as New Years and weddings, the younger people also wear Kimonos. In Japan dark colors are for the old people and bright colors for the young, and you seldom see young people in grey or black kimonos. The weather differs in parts of Japan. We have four seasons, and in June we have the rainy season which I do not like. I have never seen as much snow as you have. In Kobe we have about one or two inches. Of course in the northern part they have about the same amount as you do. I enjoy the beautiful snow scenes of the country- side in the United States. My American sister and I wore snow shoes a short time ago. I discovered that it is more difficult to walk with them than I ever imagined. When I fell down I had difficulty getting up again. I am very glad the American Field Service chose me as the exchange student to come to Randolph. I feel that I have made many friends in western New York, and know that this friendship will continue for years to come. Air- plane travel has made our world much smaller, and I hope that I may have the pleasure of entertaining my American friends in Japan when I return home. I also would like to return to America again some day. l l 1 1 HILLTOP STAFF Row One: Chuck Wilfong, Sylvia Washburn, Carol Williams, Judy Brace, Suzie Casler, Vicky Intihar.
