WW' Gqufumn To me the most beautiful season in the year is autumn with its hazy hills, clear blue skies and frosty nights. Nothing is more inspiring than to view the wonderful changes which Nature has made. What does it mean when the cricket chirps? And away to the south the robbins steer? When apples are falling and leaves grow brown?- These are signs that autumn is here. The trees which a few months ago were covered with a bright green foliage have changed to beautiful colors of red, brown, orange and yellow. To many people autumn is a dread because it signifies the death of summer. It seems to me as though Nature has used a palette of many beautiful colors to brighten what otherwise might be a drab and dreary landscape. It is beautiful to drive through the country and look at the shocks of corn standing in the fields. Usually there are golden pumpkins nestling at the foot of the shocks. The trees loaded with ripe red apples, the vines with purple grapes are inspiring sights. Also one sees at a distance the hills covered with gaily colored foliage. In autumn the earth is more tranquil. There seems to be a hush upon the earth. Often the only sound is the gentle rustle of leaves as they are blown to the earth by the wind. Then how pretty the ground is after it is covered. We hear the children romping in the leaves shouting at the top of their voices while they ale busy raking At night we see many bonflres where the children and exen glown ups enjoy themselves The flowers begin to droop their heads and go to sleep for the winter soon to be covered with a blanket of snow On my way to school these beautiful autumn mornings I walk down a long lane of colorful maples which line our village streets and I breathe the tang of the crisp morning air Now I appreciate more fully these lines of Helen Hunt Jackson suns and skies and clouds of June And flowers of June together cannot rival for one hour Octobers bright blue weather M oosy to Cycas 1 uaiunatton, I awoke one morning in my little apartment m the American section of Hong Kong to hear a dreadful commotion outside I th ew aside the bamboo shutters and looked out on the street It was utter confusion Chlnamen were running here and there hammering each other over the head and swinging then huge cutlasses around their heads This outbreak had been expected for some time and I knew from the first that Tooey on Youey the famous tea raise and Hong Kong playboy had been captured and probably killed by Wee Tu a Jealous Chinese gangster and that their respective gangs had clashed I was rather amused at this scene until I noticed an American girl in the middle of the turmoil trying desperately to get to shelter I acted quickly Jumping from my window to the street and pushing my way through the fighting Oricntals ard stepping over the prostrate ones I soon r ached the helpless girl I shoulde ed hcl and fought my way back to my doorway and placed her inside She started to thank me but before I could answer everything went black I found later that I had been hit with a club by one of Wee Tus rackateers I awoke and found it to be night and I was conscious of a splltt ng pan in my head Looking around me I found myself to be in what appeared to be an old warehouse I heard screams and cries coming from an adjoining room and noticed two large brawny chlnamen standing by the doorway While I was observing these things I was confronted by a small chmaman vuth a cap on and a worn out black suit He told me in broken English to 1 v ' i q AIO ' 1 Ye v - H -D. .
