'319 WW' Gqufumn To me the most beautiful season in the year is autumn with its hazy hills, clear blue skies and frosty nights. Nothing is more inspiring than to view the wonderful changes which Nature has made. What does it mean when the cricket chirps? And away to the south the robbins steer? When apples are falling and leaves grow brown?- These are signs that autumn is here. The trees which a few months ago were covered with a bright green foliage have changed to beautiful colors of red, brown, orange and yellow. To many people autumn is a dread because it signifies the death of summer. It seems to me as though Nature has used a palette of many beautiful colors to brighten what otherwise might be a drab and dreary landscape. It is beautiful to drive through the country and look at the shocks of corn standing in the fields. Usually there are golden pumpkins nestling at the foot of the shocks. The trees loaded with ripe red apples, the vines with purple grapes are inspiring sights. Also one sees at a distance the hills covered with gaily colored foliage. In autumn the earth is more tranquil. There seems to be a hush upon the earth. Often the only sound is the gentle rustle of leaves as they are blown to the earth by the wind. Then how pretty the ground is after it is covered. We hear the children romping in the leaves shouting at the top of their voices while they ale busy raking At night we see many bonflres where the children and exen glown ups enjoy themselves The flowers begin to droop their heads and go to sleep for the winter soon to be covered with a blanket of snow On my way to school these beautiful autumn mornings I walk down a long lane of colorful maples which line our village streets and I breathe the tang of the crisp morning air Now I appreciate more fully these lines of Helen Hunt Jackson suns and skies and clouds of June And flowers of June together cannot rival for one hour Octobers bright blue weather M oosy to Cycas 1 uaiunatton, I awoke one morning in my little apartment m the American section of Hong Kong to hear a dreadful commotion outside I th ew aside the bamboo shutters and looked out on the street It was utter confusion Chlnamen were running here and there hammering each other over the head and swinging then huge cutlasses around their heads This outbreak had been expected for some time and I knew from the first that Tooey on Youey the famous tea raise and Hong Kong playboy had been captured and probably killed by Wee Tu a Jealous Chinese gangster and that their respective gangs had clashed I was rather amused at this scene until I noticed an American girl in the middle of the turmoil trying desperately to get to shelter I acted quickly Jumping from my window to the street and pushing my way through the fighting Oricntals ard stepping over the prostrate ones I soon r ached the helpless girl I shoulde ed hcl and fought my way back to my doorway and placed her inside She started to thank me but before I could answer everything went black I found later that I had been hit with a club by one of Wee Tus rackateers I awoke and found it to be night and I was conscious of a splltt ng pan in my head Looking around me I found myself to be in what appeared to be an old warehouse I heard screams and cries coming from an adjoining room and noticed two large brawny chlnamen standing by the doorway While I was observing these things I was confronted by a small chmaman vuth a cap on and a worn out black suit He told me in broken English to 1 v ' i q AIO ' 1 Ye v - H -D. . The family was poor and it was a hard struggle to make a living on the farm after her father died. Mary was very ambitious and eager to learn. She would teach school and earn money to continue her education. At thirty-five Mary Lyon began the struggle to build an inexpensive woman's college. At this time people did not believe in higher education for women. But Mary Lyon would not be defeated. She went from house to house to collect money for her purpose. Thus it was that Mount Holyoke College. the first woman's college had its successful beginning. The value of Mary Lyon's influence over thousands of young women under her guidance could hardly be estimated. Your mule climbed up the belfry- All alone? Yes, Holy Father, all alone-Here, look up there. Do you see her ears sticking out? One would say they were two swallows. Mercy, said the poor pope, raising his eyes. She must have lost her head! She will be killed!-Do you want to come down, wretched thing? Pecaire, she would ask no more than that, only to come down, but how? The stairway? One must think not of it. That might be climbed but there would be a chance of break'ing her legs a hundred times in the descent. There the poor mule grieved thought wholly of Tistet Vedene. 'Ahl Bandit if I get out of this-what a kick tomorrow morning! This idea of a kick gave back a little strength to her heart without this she would not have been able to hold out. When we started school last September, we met two new commercial teachers, Miss Dilling for the stenographic work, Miss Daniels for the bookkeeping department. We were offered the new courses of Introduction to Business and Office Practice. There are 147 enrolled in this department. Enthusiasm is increasing steadily. Office Practice is a summary of two successful years of Shorthand and one of Typewriting. This course teaches the essentials of office practice, typewriting, accuracy and speed. Accuracy and speed are obtained only after weeks of drill practice and untiring work. These factors are very important in both Shorthand and Typewriting. R. C. S. ranks high in these respects because it has several contest wins to her credit. Bookkeeping provides an understanding of technical business fundamentals. Busi- ness Arithmetic aids in mathematical accuracy. The best students from these classes are entered yearly in the County Commercial contest. Introduction to Business involves a general procedure of everyday commercial work. It is a basis of either the stenographic or the bookkeeping courses. Business Law is a study of the rules which regulate business transactions. It 'ls a subject that interests all students following any course Economics is a practical subject necessary for completion of any course in commerce It is the study of human wants and the satisfaction of those wants It gives one a knowledge of how big business is carried on in this country Through the cooperation of the instructors and the students the department has established a practical course for any pupils who plan to enter business Yours truly M E C 6 I 6lWLlZq The art department of our school has been developed thoroughly since our new school was built The drawing department has a large room in our new school devoted entirely to drawing The room has special desks and seats for drawing The materials are nearly all furnished by the school For the upper classes mechanical drawing representation and design are taught by Miss Dibble Some exceptionally well done soap carvings were made by the grades and High School this year Prizes were taken by Robert Huntington and Tim Anderson wth James Kane honorabl mention in High School Iris Spencer Marshall Abbey and Dean Johnson in the eighth grade Grace Mllks William Bailey and Lucile Hotchkiss in the seventh g ade The first prize in the Christmas Seal po ter contest was won by our school by Paul Robinson and honorable mention Earl Carr Exhibits are held annually and the best work IS exhibited Much of this work is very well done showing that the course has accomplished its int ntlons in bringing out and develop ng the artis ic t lents of many M R 6 ll usfrmf rfs The Industrial Arts Department is one of tae late additions to our school It vias put in when our school was built in 1932 Under the in t uction of Mr G E Tripp the pupils turn out many well made articles The pup ls learn to use the machines which consist of a circular saw made with mort cing attachments a tilting table a Jomter with an eight inch blade a drum sander wood lathe and a band saw These machines make up the woodwo king machlrery For steel brass copper and electrical work there are among the tocls a steel lathe and a set of hammels for working brass and copper as other tools With the use of these tools the pupils make useful things for their homes such as library tables book cases and cedar chests The pupils learn the fundamentals of b ss wo k ll ct 1C l work ard auto mechanics Indeed this new branch is a very practical course for the one who does not like Latin and other subjects hard for him to learn The pupil leaves the school with a good basic knowledge of his trade or profession M R 6 s . , , . . .
