RANDOLPH SAILORS SAVE 4 SCOTS AFTER YACHT CAPSIZES . . Two stout laddies and their two bonnie lassies, sightseeing in the vicinity of the aircraft carrier RAN- DOLPH, themselves became the main attraction when their 20-foot sailboat capsized, ushering them unceremoniously into the Firth of Forth. The four, James D. Leuchars, Mervyn D. Taylor, lrene Johnson, and Wilma Paton, all of Burntisland, Fife, Scotland, were circling the big ship anchored three miles off Edinburgh when their small craft was capsized by a mountain of a wave in the wind- whipped Firth of Forth. Three RANDOLPH sailors, Boatswain's Mate Third Class James T. Markham of St. Alhan's, West Virginia, Seaman Apprentice Robert C. Campbell of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Seaman Arthur T. Ja- cobs of Washington, D.C., were standing on the fan- tail when they saw the boat overturn about one mile off the ship's port side. The three sailors immediately manned the duty life- boat, always standing by for such emergencies, and proceeded to the scene. The rescue was completed just 10 minutes after the accident. The four Scots were taken to the shipis sick bay and given warm clothing and warming Nrefreshmentsf' No injuries were reported and the four were taken home after thawing out from the harrowing experi- ence. Their boat, uprighted by RANDOLPH sailors and towed back to the ship was later towed ashore after minor repairs. Leuchars, the yacht's owner said, We can never thank the Americans enough. We were in a pretty dangerous position and things were getting tricky. The United States Navy did a grand job. The three RANDOLPH sailors were commended for their heroic deed at Meritorious Mast by RAN- DOLPH Commanding Officer, Captain William B. Morton.
