Later that year, VS-361 received the first oper- ational 520, u new aircraft with capabilities considerably improved over the original Tracker , SZD, manufactured by Grumman Aircraft Company, is a twin-engined carrier-based aircraft designed to seek out and destroyfenerny submarines, It is a single-package detection and attack unit structurally similar to the S2F--1, but including niqmefotts design features in advanced electronics system. improved range, more space, and great handling ease. This aircraft, like its predecessor, can either be carrier or land based. As a part of the recovery forces for Project Mercury, VS'36 and RANDOLPH participated in the recovery of Astronaut Virgil 4. Grissom in julv 1961, and the recovery of LCOL john Glenn, USMC, after his tri-orbitalflight during February 1962. On 7 june 1962, VS-36 and RANDOLPH were temporarily detached from Task Group ALFA and departed on a deployment of approximately three months that included operations with the SIXTH FLEET in the Mediterranean and adjacent waters and visits to many forwgri ports. Upon return to the States, VS-36 had Once 484571 joined ALFA for ASW Operations. The quarantine of the Island of Cuba in the fall of 1962, found VS-36 and USS RANDOLPH at sea, operating in direct imple- mentation of the PrvsirIent's decision. The primary mission was ASW defense of the quarantine force, with a secondary mission of surface iUfl.'I'lil!l7lFl'.
