As a result of cutbacks in all the Armed Forces due to economic factors, Air Anti-Submarine Squadron TWENTY. SIX was decommissioned in 1956. In accordance with a Chief of Naval Operations directive forming ASW Carrier Air Groups, VS-26 was recommissioned on 6 june 1960 in a special ceremony held at NAS Norfolk, Commander C.j. SEIBERLICH, USN assuming command at that time. The squadron was commissioned in a ready status having re- ceived a full complement of qualified pilots, crewmen and maintenance personnel from VS-36 her sister squadron in Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group FIFTY-EIGHT aboard the USS RANDOLPH CCVS-151. From the date of commissioning until September 1960, VS-26 operated as a unit of Task Group ALFA, the special task group formed to develop and evaluate new tactics to strengthen the ASW capabilities of the fleet. In September 1960. Air Group FIFTY-EIGHT moved ashore at the Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia to transition to the Grumman S2F-3 Tracker . VS-26 and VS-36 were the first operational squadrons to receive this new air- craft which is an advanced design ofthe S2F-1 with new and improved ASW detection equipment and an increased operating range. In April of 1961 VS-26, with other units of CVSG-58 aboard the USS RANDOLPH, deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for refresher training with the Fleet Training Group.. In july 1961, operational control of VS-26 was returned to Commander, Task Group ALFA and the squadron par- ticipated in the midshipman cruise that took the RANDOLPH to Mayport, Florida and the Caribbean. During the following months, the squadron participated in the recovery of two astronauts, connected with the NASA Mercury Project program. Returning to Norfolk, the squadron returned to its duties with Task Group ALFA, spending approximately one half of its time at sea to participate in the development of new and more refined tactics in ASW. Then in june 1962, the squadron, aboard RANDOLPH, joined the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. While participating in many ASW exercises, the RANDOLPH visited Naples, Italy, Barcelona, Spain: Palermo, Sicily,' Cannes, France: and Valencia, Spain before returning to NAS Norfolk in August. During October 1962, the squadron participated in the United States Naval Quarantine of the Republic of Cuba, while part of Task Group ALFA aboard USS RANDOLPH. VS-26 proved itself to be a superbly trained ASW squad- ron by initially locating and successfully tracking foreign submarines which were attempting to remain undetected and were, once exposed, attempting evasion. In conjunction with other units of Air Group FIFTY-EIGHT, VS-26 made significant contributions to the overall effectiveness of the naval quarantine and therefore, to the implemen- tation ofthe U.S. Foreign Policy. In May 1963, VS-26 embarked on the USS RANDOLPH to participate in a midshipman cruise and visited such Canbbean pans as: 5,1 Thomas, P071 gf Spain fTrinidad1,' Colon, Panama: and the U.S. NavalStation, Guantanamo. On 5 june 1964, Commander N. K. GREEN assumed duty as Commanding Officer of VS-26. Two weeks after the Change of command the squadron, as part of Task Group ALFA, departed aboard the USS RANDOLPH on a summer midshipman cruise visiting Quebec City, Canada! and New Yofk- New York'
