Some acquire it after years of training, waiting, and discipline. But the will to win is a common thing in all men — even those men not sure of their drives or unable to put them into words. All of these elements go into the making of a majorette. The whistle blows, the music begins and soon you see them standing tall and erect waiting to start their performance of dazzling and twirling batons. Their orange bodysuits and white boots stand out against the broken turf of the football field. It is hard to imagine that in just a few minutes, they will start their spectacular feature of whirling fire through the air. The field lights fade out. All you can see are two balls of fire and the outline of the girls faces. Before you know it the lights pop back on and all that is left is the smoke drifting toward the sky. It makes you realize that this has really been some year and the majorettes were part of it. I’m just a guy, flesh and blood, nervous, scared to death sometimes, who has found he can put a basketball into a basket pretty easily and who has found he can do it best when it’s important. This is a very nice thing. It’s not discovering a cure for disease or pulling people out of burning buildings, but it’s very nice for me to be able to do it well. — Jerry West Basketball is no longer a game that is played just to keep athletes in shape between football and baseball seasons. At Randleman backboard fever has hit hard this year. Virtually unmolested the Tigers have won nearly all of their games. Spirit has been high and the gym has been overflowing almost every game. Battles with Trinity, East Davidson and Central Davidson sent most people into fits of frenzy. . . shoot two, big team. EC SAPD The Orange and Blue uniforms of Randleman are fitting with the flashy type of basketball Randleman has played this year. Run and shoot. . . McPherson’s long jumper that can’t go it and yet it does. Robbin’s unbelievable moves ... Pugh’s play- making. . . Laughlin’s strength. . . and Keith Yow’s uncanny ability to rebound and score have make the Tigers No. 1 . So have Turner, Toomes, Linthucum, K. Laughlin, Groce, Hill and Foxx. . . Coach Redding has coached one of the finest teams in Randleman’s history. . . They certainly have provided enough memories and given enough cold chills to be remembered. . . as well shouts of ‘“‘send ‘em back to the woods” and ‘‘We’re No. . This has been very demanding upon the girls, who sometimes play the game as well as the boys . The girls’ team this year has had arough time ofit. . . losses came often, and victories were far and few between. . . but often games were lost in the last few seconds. . . Heartbreaking and frustrating loses, disappointment, and yes, even tears . sometimes, however there was laughter and joyous shouting . It was a year of contrasts ranging from size. . . little versus big . to the hot stuffy gym and the frosty air one breathes after the game. : 4 4 AW 3, The Lady Tigers were lead by Susan Russell whose hot hand kept them going all season. . . Lynne Ridge snared rebounds, Pam Farlow scored and hustled well, as did Linda Hodgin, Beverly Russell, Karen Jarrett, Carol Tysinger, and Shelly Groce. . . The team hustled and was determined, thus creating plenty of excitement. . . The team was hurt by size and inexperience, as most of the girls were very short. . . Yet they tried, and harassed their opponents. . . They battled and scrapped and proved to all . that girls can play basketball. Cheerleaders They stand the bitter cold, occasional rain, and harassment from the visiting fans. They work long hard hours to produce a successful pep rally. They sacrifice lunch to work on a contest. They stand and cheer with all their hearts even if their team is losing. Cheerleaders do all these things for their school and still come up witha. . . smile. Baseball at RHS has been rich in colorful players and equally colorful nicknames. This year’s team includes Binky, Loon, Rub, Slats, Gobella, Tadpole, Jazz, and Mac. It has been a time for new uniforms — while with blue trim, orange socks and belts, and a time for language, or rather endless chatter to match: You’re the one, You're the babe. . . Right in. . . Bow yourneck. . . Base knock. . . Sounds like a graveyard out here. . . Let’s Go!!! Baseball is choreographic. . . is a kind of a collective chess with arms and legs in full play under sunlight. . . is varied, there are many dif- ferent acts to be performed — pitching, throwing, catching, batting, running, stealing, sliding and signaling. Hits are just as varied — flies, Texas Leaguers, bunts, line drives, and baseline fouls. . . is timeless — marked by no clock except the events of the game. Since baseball’s time is measured only in outs, all you have to do is succeed utterly, keep hitting, keep the rally alive, and you have defeated time. You remain forever young. Baseball is alive and well at RHS. In the past three years our teams have won the Conference Championship twice and finished second last year. Eager to redeem themselves the Tigers will prove to be very tough to defeat. Mike Robbins, ace of the mound corps will be back. Catcher, Rick McPherson will return, as will third baseman Terry Linthicum, second baseman Craig Pugh, shortstop James Morris, and right-fielder Phil Beane. . . Hitting, pitching, fielding, thrills of all kinds. . . name it and Randleman baseball, then and now, has had an abun- dance of it all. The future is just as promising. Truthful, faithful, loving, and such, You're always there when I’m in a clutch. Friend, friend, sure as you’re born, Things will look better tomorrow morn. Six ways to breakfast and back again, You’ll always be my bosom friend. Ed Lasko The Petty Story el ee mop sortmee is one who says ‘‘good morning” and means A friend SEASONS For our world the circle turns again. Throughout the years we’ve seen the seasons change. It has meant a lot to me to start anew. Oh, the winter is cold, but I’m so warm with you. Out there, there is not a sound to be heard, And the seasons seem to sleep upon their words. As the waters freeze up with the summer’s end, Oh, it’s funny how young lovers start as friends. Yes, its funny how young lovers start as. . . FRIENDS. Elton John Berie Taupin IN 4 re ses. Pn. ie mange a aman Conclusion As we grow older we will grow wiser, but the opposite is also true. As we grow wiser we will also grow older. It is inevitable. With age comes the longing for the past . . .“The Good Old Days’’. In the future little things that are important now will have become old, yellowed, and musty. Yet, in our search for our yesterdays these same little things will once again, for an instant, generate in us the happiness and freedom of our youth. Simple things hold in them the keys to happiness. . . an old love note, a ticket stub, a wilted flower, a forgotten tune, a faded photograph, an old annual. Yes, perhaps our annuals will not become a forgotten thing, here for an instant and then lost on the shelves of our homes and of our minds. . . the kind note in the back of an annual from a friend you had forgotten. . . the memory of annual day when the pretty girl in the third row of your geometry class signed your book. Her name doesn’t matter. . . Life is fortified by its friendships; let us not forget them. . . Friendship is a plant of slow growth. Yet, it will live as long as it gets its amount of love no matter how old it be or how deep its roots might have to reach. . . Yes, for many the annual will not be forgotten. When its pages are slowly turned and the smile of yesterdays are relived, the hope of this annual staff will be fulfilled. The hope that this year will be remembered by tomorrow’s nostalgic wanderers as a good year — one remembered by its. . . FRIENDS. Appreciation Hunter Publishing Company Ed Goldston J.B.
