The Class of 1966 Presents 1966 RENDEZVOUS Randleman High School Randleman, North Carolina Published by the Rendezvous Staff Martha Hammond, Editor Volume Twenty-three Randolph Public Library Asheboro, North Carolina School Life.6 Academics.18 Organizations.32 Athletics.48 Album.76 Freshmen.78 Sophomores.84 Juniors.88 Seniors.94 Advertisements.118 3 We Pay In appreciation to a teacher who has given us an un¬ forgettable friendship, we, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Six, sincerely dedicate this, the twenty-third volume of the RENDEZVOUS to Miss Ruby Gray. Miss Gray has taken an interest in all of our prob¬ lems. Whether they were large or small, each were equally important to her. She gave us understanding and built up our courage to face the hardships of life. She shared our joys with delight and our tears with comfort. We grew to depend upon her guidance which she always gave so patiently. Miss Gray inspired us to set our goals high, and unselfishly gave her help to insure our reaching them. She has taught us much to add to our knowledge, but far more important, she has helped to develop a better character in each of us. Miss Gray and Seniors make last minute preparations for Student Teaching. Honoring . .. MISS RUBY GRAY You mean there ' s another act? 4 Tribute To . . In appreciation to a teacher who helped us to get a start in the right direction in the beginning of our high school years, we, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Six, sincerely dedicate this, the twenty-third volume of the RENDEZVOUS to Mrs. Lucile Newlin.Mrs. Newlinwas willing to unselfishly give her time, interest, and patience to make sure that each of us would find his place in Randleman High School. She worked constantly to inspire us to develop the best of our abilities. This untiring interest in us has never waned, for Mrs. Newlin has continued to be an inspiration to the Seniors in the editing of this year ' s annual. It was only by her encour¬ agement and unfailing help that the 1966 RENDEZVOUS was published. To her we owe an unrepayable debt of gratitude. Honoring . . . MRS. LUCILE NEWLIN 6 The punks , Freshmen, are told what to do, when to do it, and where to do it. They slip into the routine of everyday drudgery with amazing swiftness. Each comes back the following year as a Sophomore - that terrible in-between year when nothing is new, but the stigma of being a little man still clings to him. The realm of the upperclassman is reached in the Junior year, which teaches humility and brashness at the same time. Finally with class rings and the S.A.T. comes the person known as - Senior. This is the person who knows it all, or so he thinks. 7 f ' - _1 sHsrHP 7 ••’’Sis •• i : jl•■ r ' v io8 r4atM ' wm 1 ? ’ ] F  r ' JlB C 5 IE ' — gg nnM w ' ■ fr 1 I 8 Each class is separate from the rest. Each has something that belongs to it alone. For the Frosh , it is the newness of everything — changing classes, study halls, and being the underdogs. For the Sophomores, it is the unforgettable experience of biology- slimy algae, deceased frogs, and fragile slides. It is the hard work that makes an enchanting Junior-Senior for the Juniors. It is also the P. S. A. T. — that first step toward college. For the Seniors, it is a heightened awareness of the world and of its influence on their lives. It is also the worry of what comes next year; the constant strain of - What shall I become? 9 But, each class is bound to the others. Almost everything we have in common. The exasperating one-row parking — if we are late, there is a two-mile hike awaiting us. The lockers that won ' t lock, or hold our coat, books and various junk so that every time we open it— out everything comes in a heap. The heart-rending experience of having to walk a country mile to a water fountain, only to find forty others have beaten us to it. 10 The griping about the food although we admit secretly it is good. The fighting in the bottleneck of the main hall to get through so as not to be late for our next class. Tests, the necessary evil, that we all hate with abandon. The week-end homework that is not done and is mourned over the following Monday. 11 All is not tears and woe. Only a minute fraction consists of complaining. The rest is pleasurable, exhilarating, and often touching. The football games - all memorable in their own right. Many things make up a football game - the pep rally that afternoon, the Tigers ploughing through bone-cracking practices day after day for the glory of R.H.S. The stadium - newly built and our pride and joy. The cheerleaders leading us to heights of frenzy. The majorettes, beautiful and entertaining, but only through a summer of perfection practices. The band, an integral part of football games. The very air with its crispness that makes us want to yell. And yell we do - with joy or anger, as if by our clamor, we ourselves could attain the longed for victory. The bursting pride when we win; the dejection when we lose. Homecoming. The floats - a culmination of effort on the part of all. The parade, the people, the pride. That night, the extra try for glory, the big roaring crowd. The crowning of the chosen one, the tearful joy, the beauty of all. 12 13 The other sports—basketball - with the Tigers trying for the win and the number one slot. Baseball, track, golf—the big effort for the trophy, won only by practice, skill, and nerve. The clubs and their activities add much to our lives. The Beta Convention, Student Council elections, F. T.A. teaching, F.H.A. andF.F.A. initiations, the move on a chess board, the click of a camera. The hum of activity that goes on whenever people meet in common interest. The happiness of just belonging. 14 The extra special events: the dances where boy meets girl and all is forgotten in the pulsating music; the Fall Festival, the means to an end - a new activity bus; the plays, where the many practices represent drudgery in its worst form, but with the result being that special glory that begins with the sound of applause. 15 All is not rowdy; we remember the quiet, thoughtful times. Times of thought for the future, for the ideals we live by - for their worth in our lives. Times to remember past events - perhaps monumental in our life, but meaningless to others. And the little things—the books stacked endlessly, the chit-chat of everyday, the bother of absentee slips, announcements, bulletin boards - all are in our lives. ' Randleman High School consists of all of these. Most important, it consists of people. We, the students, mold it by our opinions and actions. Individually and collectively, we make R.H.S. what it is - our life for four wonderful years. 16 In Memory of Robert Lee Boling Youth, the unconquerable, departs. And takes in its leaving, Something rare from our hearts That never blossoms again. 17 18 Our Principal Relaxation comes seldom as a busy day seems unending.. This year, Randleman found itself with a new princi¬ pal, Mr. Harold Davis. At first, we were somewhat dubious as to how we would like this new giant in our midst. Soon, it became evident that he stood always for the student and what he could accomplish, and not for the system. Quickly we warmed to this person who worked so diligently for us. Always he seemed to be there just when we needed him, never shortchanging anyone. We feel fortunate to have him as principal of R.H. S. 20 TEACHERS . . . They Help Us MISS ARNETHA MANNING MR. A. A. WALL Serving as a Jack-of-all-trades , Mr. Lineberry merits everyone ' s gratitude. He teaches Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen - and does it with patience unlimited. French I, Economics Sociology, U. S. His¬ tory, and Government all get his special touch. Miss Manning, a new addition to the faculty, does an excellent job as librarian. She also teaches both U.S. and World History and English I. An old friend to the students is Mr. Wall. It is to him students turn when the big question, What shall I be? , arises. Besides being our Guidance Counselor, Mr. Wall teaches World History. 21 They Understand Us MRS. PEGGY BUNTING MRS. ERSELL YORK Mrs. Bunting is a familiar sight to the students at Randleman High. Daniels, by his willingness to help students, is the favorite of many students at our school. He includes in his daily schedule the teaching of Construction Trades Industry and I.V.E. Teaching the difficult course of Bricklaying is Mr. E. Daniels. In his first year at R. H. S. he has proved to be a necessary member of the teaching staff, as well as a popular one. MR. ED DANIELS MR. CHARLES DANIELS Just what exactly does a contact lens look like? 25 MISS JANET HOHN They Enlighten Us MR. FLETCHER CAUSEY A familiar figure around the school is Mr. Causey. Always working diligently for the student, he spends his time trying to dispel the mysteries of Biology, Chemistry, and General Science. Mr. Corder, by teaching Chemistry, Physics, and Algebra I, illustrates his love for science. He works hard to instill knowledge in all his students. Teaching Biology and Physical Education, Miss Hohn has proved to be an asset to our faculty. She is a teacher dedicated to her work and students. Another member of our Science Department is Mr. Stegall. A recent addition to our school ' s staff, his teaching day is occupied with the instruction of General Science. Mrs. Jones devotes her time to teaching Algebra I, General Math, and Consumer Math. She is well-known to all Betas as their sponsor. Mr. Pritchard is another teacher who spends his day trying to explain the difficult world of math. He teaches Algebra II, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra G Trig . 26 27 MRS. DOROTHY CARTER MISS ROENA GALLIMORE MISS RUBY GRAY 28 About Us And here we have the ' Mona Lisa ' by Michelangelo MR. J. W. HINES MRS. LUCRE NEWLIN Mrs. Carter, who teaches English IV and Journalism, gives Seniors a thorough going over before college. A lover of baby chicks and of Shakespeare, she is a teacher to whom we owe much. Miss Gallimore instructs the Freshmen in the ir first attempt at high school English. Devoting her time not only to just English, her art classes have become famous. The favorite of the Seniors, although she teaches English III, is Miss Gray. Her concern for us, as well as her interesting classes mark her as a wonderful teacher. Mr. Hines is a teacher who works hard for his students. Teaching French I and II, he is well-known around the school. Mrs. Newlin devotes most of her time to the Soph¬ omores and English II. However, she finds time to sponsor our annual, the RENDEZVOUS. It is only by her advice and concern that the annual is published. 29 STAFF . . . The realization that we owe so much to so many comes quickly, and with it comes the fact that we can never hope to repay those who have helped us. For the future, we have only the highest of hopes. We will ' always remember what we have learned here, in knowledge and in character. We can give only a grateful Thank You to our friends who have freely given their help, and hope that we can be as admirable in life as they have been. 140 A PRODUCT OF WINSTON SALEM.
