Class Histor Joie Bxooitsnme, Class Hixlorian The seniors were gathered in a corner of their classroom carrying on the usual conversation. Some were talking of the last ball game, some of what had happened to them outside of school, and those who were more studious. were discussing their school work. Soon this jabber-jabber ceased and all was quiet. Some one had suggested we discuss the things that had happened to us during our struggle for knowledge in old Randleman High. This wasn't a bad idea either, because our last year of high school work was drawing to a close and probably some of us wouldn't sec each other again. The group finally decided to let one person tell the whole story. He made a brief summary of our first seven years - seven years of wonderful memories, but it wasn't until junior high school that our class became united and we began our most important years at Randleman. Thus our story begins: It was in the fall of '42 that we entered junior high school and first felt the thrill of being able to associate with upper classmen. We welcomed into our ranks those students from Worthville and New Market who made our class a larger and much better one. This year was somewhat different from what we had expected. There was an entirely new set of courses along with three teachers. We had expected to be treated just as high school students and have as much freedom as they. Some of the boys played basketball and baseball while the girls enjoyed their lone sport, basketball. Many of us joined the high school Glee Club. Although this meant an extra year for us, we are proud now that we were the first class to start the junior high school in Randleman. Our freshman year was a thriller - remember? The same faces showed up again and were put under the leadership of Miss Sink and Mr. Neece. I guess this was our most diflicult year of schooling. Although we were not to blame, it seemed that the teachers just wouldn't stay with us. Our first misfortune happened when Uncle Sam called Mr. Neece to service. That left us without an algebra teacher. Finally we settled down to work with a full corps of teachers. Athletics. Glee Club, and Home Economics played the im- portant role of the year. As sophomores we felt that we were a little more advanced than before. We even acted as juniors because there wasn't a class between us and the seniors. This year we looked forward to the junior- senior banquet which we made financially possible by selling magazines. With the help of Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Lynch and with the co-operation of the students, we made and carried out our plans. Finally on the night of May 12, 1945, our class gave the seniors their banquet. The gymnasium was decorated in palms to represent a Hawaiian island. The program consisted of several speeches along with some songs and dances. We had a very fine meal and I think everyone enjoyed the evening. Soon school time rolled around again and we entered the junior class. We could be called upper class- men now because there were no seniors ahead of us. At the beginning of the session we elected ofiicers as follows: President, Eddie Bailey, Vice-President, Peggy Kennedyg Secretary, Sherrill Shaw, Treasurer, Betty Lou Robbins. This was our most unusual year. We went to school day after day and nothing much happened. Again we sold magazines to build our treasury. This time Miss Cox helped us and we again made a good profit. At the close of the year the class. under the leadership of Miss Cox, decided to give a play. There was to be no commencement and we thought this might brighten things up a little. The title of the play was Out Of This World by Bruce Brandon. Several students took part and it turned out to be most successful. On the night of the play Superintendent Fletcher Bulla gave diplomas to Tommy Galyon, who had made enough units, and Pierce Thorpe, a returned veteran. Now we have reached our last and final year at Randleman High. Yes, we are now seniors. As the twelfth year opened. we found that some of our classmates had dropped out and others had entered. We were proud to have Providence High School students join us to enlarge our class. We were glad also to have five veterans return. With these additions our class grew to a total of fifty-seven members. Our senior year developed into a most busy one. At the beginning of the year we elected omcers as follows: President, Connie Harding Vice-President, Joe Brookshire, Secretary, Nancy Jenningsg Treasurer, Hilda Redding. Following this we chose our superlatives. Then came the annual staff. Finally all of the offices were Hlled, and it was time to go to work. Many of the seniors are members of the Beta Club. They, along with the other members, and with the help of Mrs. Spivey, have done a grand job. Their paper, The Spot Light, has played a big role during this school year, and we, the seniors, have enjoyed it very much. The Annual staff has also been busy at work. They have taken pictures and gathered material from various sources. Several subscriptions have been sold, and we think ours is one of the best annuals ever pub- lished at Randleman High School. In bringing his story to a close, he told of the commencement exercises and various activities that would take place in our last few days as students in Randleman High. He also added this sentence, which I wish could be fulfilled by all of our fellow-classmates, May our course of knowledge not alter at this point. The seniors that were gathered around him remained quiet for several minutes. Finally the bell sounded and the students went on their way. So ends the high school history of the class of '47. May this be a good beginning for future history that we, as citizens, hope to make. '6f5145v
