We wish to express deep appreciation to the teachers, students, friends, and all who have cooperated in making this yearbook a success. e luflsaanilnilvuusl -- DEDIIIATIUN WE, THE SENIOR CLAss, dedicate this volume of the RENDEZVOUS to the boys of our school and commu- nity who are now in the Armed Forces of the United States. Miss Maude Fox and Miss Workman were the first teachers to start us on our edu- cational journey. Perhaps the most vivid recollection of that year was our first chapel program, The Toy Shop. In the second year we thought we were perfect little angels, but whether Miss Mary Swaim and Miss May Parsons did or not, we never knew. Despite the fact that we had to stand in the corner for mischievous pranks, we were taught how to work arith- metic and to get our assignments when told -and Miss Parrish, our third grade teacher, saw that we did. The fourth year rolled around and our studies naturally became more complicated, but under the direction and teaching of Miss Herring and Miss johnson, we pulled through and were promoted to the fifth. Near the end of our fifth year, when we had just begun to sit back and take it easy, up popped our first real examinations. We gathered up all our books and actually carried them home. We were proud when Jean Marie Stout won first place in the local spelling contest. Our teachers, Mrs. Millikan and Mrs. Hammond, who either felt sorry for us or were getting tired, let us go on to the sixth grade. In the sixth and seventh years we began to study more because we were eager to find out what high school was like, also we knew we must prepare for State examinations. Mrs. Scott and Miss Walker were our teach- ers for the sixth, Miss Ellen Barker and Mrs. Era Zimmerman for the seventh. When we started out for the first morn- ing, we were really nervous. Somehow it all seemed so different from the other years. We were told to go to the auditorium where we would find out where to go, what for, and when. That first year of high school was one of our biggest thrills. There were 109 in the eighth grade, so it was somewhat CLASS UFlH44 crowded. Our teachers were Mr. Sawyer, Mr. Roberts, and Mr. Parks. We were not old enough to quit that year so we went on to the ninth grade. Miss Yount was our teacher for the ninth, and we liked her very much. Some of the boys went out for basketball and made the team with natural skill. A few of the lucky girls were waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our Junior year in high school has many pleasant memories. We could hardly wait until we received our class rings. When we got them we found out that they were worth waiting for. Our next problem was raising money for the Iunior-Senior Banquet, but we solved it by selling magazines, fiavoring, and hand lotion. In this problem, Mrs. Bow- man, our teacher, proved to be a great help. Our class officers were: Iean Stout, Presi- dent: Wayne Lofiin, Vice-Presidentg Louise Webster, Secretary, and Richard Allred, Treasurer. Our principal. Mr. H. H. Hamil- ton, left us at the end of our tenth year and Mr. R. C. White, of Ramseur, took his place. The Senior year, the one which we had been working so hard to reach, proved to be even tougher. The three main difhculties of the Senior Class were money, money, money. We must have money for our annual, put in an order for caps and gowns. have our pictures made. order invitations and diplomas, plan our programs-and every- thing had to be done at once. Miss Cox. our teacher, was very helpful and understanding because she had been through all this be- fore. Banquet time came around again. We were entertained now, and the Iuniors gave us a very enioyable evening. By this time we began to think of all the things we were going to miss when we graduated. This year completed the history of the Class of 1944, but the memories will continue to remind us of the fun and happenings in the school of Randleman. Today, May 23, 1954, is significant in the history of my Alma Mater, since it is home-coming day set aside for the dedication of the modern, beautiful school building. Coming by plane from Washington, I landed at the new airport in Randleman and came by taxi to my dear old Alma Mater, which I hardly recognized. Since I was early I found none of my classmates had arrived, so I began inspection of the remodeled building. Walking into the large modern library, one of the Hnest in the state, I found a copy of the 1944 RENDEZVOUS which I greeted as an old friend. Looking through its pages I saw first a classmate who is famous, Louise Webster, an opera singer at the Metropolitan. Leonard Surratt is a minister at a local church. Next I saw Richard Allred, the Treasurer of the United States, replacing Mr. Morgenthau who has retired. jean Stout is Secretary to Wayne Loflin, the Mayor of Sophia, However, she plans to ac- cept the offer to go to New York as accompanist for a popular program at the Columbia Broad- casting Studio. Blanche julian plans to take Jeans place as Secretary, but she can't take jeans place in Wayne's heart. Lester Crotts and Worth Rich- ardson are driving transfer trucks. Lucille Hall is married and living at High Point. A letter from her said that Edna Hudson, Tommy McKenzie, Marie Presnell, and Norman Farlow are owners of the largest iron and steel plant in New jersey, running on twenty-hour shifts. They iron all day and stealaway for a good time after work. Carl- etta Allred and Maxie Lee Fleming have a shoe store in Greensboro. When I saw Nancy Fulp the other day she told me she had her own hospital. Myra jean Hardin is one of the nurses. Nancy said they usually helped the patients, but when Freddie was released from the hospital he was just as nutty as he was when he entered. Maybe he's an exception. Re- cently while I was listening to a radio program I was delighted to hear that the star was Marie Garner, the class hillbilly singer, who now has an hour program. Binford Farlow, the owner of a large farm in Sophia, has solved a great prob- lem for the housewives by raising potatoes that do not need peeling. Madelyne Anderson is pro- prietor of ther- largest dime store in Randleman. Dennis Farlow operates the Sophia Dairy. George Toomes, a doctor, lives in'Florida. Belle Bryant, a great lover of flowers has produced a thornless American Beauty rambler rose. Charles Daniels is manager of that famous baseball team, the Naomi Riverrats. Bruce Spencer and Max Rollins are the star players. ' I see in the papers that Peggy Moser is a famous Powers Model. Louise Allred is an interior decorator. Willadene Shaw is advertising manager for The Randleman Times. Frances Stanton is a Home Economics teacher for the Oak Ridge Mili- tary Academy. She has all the cadets cooking and sewing. Bill Crotts and James Bryant liked the Navy so well that they have decided to stay. Elvee Hedgecock has become famous for her many books, the most popular of which is, It Pays To Be Ignorantf' On a program the other day I heard Calvin Owens, the class Romeo, the Clark Gable of 1954. Eva Mae Farlow is planning to live at Franklin- ville. Her fiance has a sawmill, so perhaps she will help him. Lucy Frazier and Lois Harrison are pilot and co-pilot of a passenger plane, Margaret Hancock is the stewardess. Charles McCaskill, the class brag, is too busy with surgery to brag anymore. Imogene Yow is famous for her wonderful in- vention, a hair curler for rainy days. A news flash iust revealed that Sara Wise, who entered the Gigglers' Contest, won the title Miss Giggle- box of 1954.', As I close the book, I glance up and see that some of my classmates have arrived and are be- ginning their inspection of the building, so with reverence I put the annual of '44 back in its place to be scanned by many students of R. H. S. for many years to come, and go to join my classmates. NANCY GRAVES. Eighteen to twenty boys went out regularly for practice under Coach D. R. Reynolds. The team was built around Seniors Binford Farlow, Charles Daniels, Richard Allred, and Leonard Surratt, with the able support of Freshmen and Sophomores. Out of a total of twenty-six games scheduled we won sixteen and lost ten. The team was seeded third in the tournament played in Asheboro, February 25 to 29. The three scores for the Randleman team were Cleo Hayes, 193 points, Charles Daniels, 188 points, and Binford Farlow, 148 points. The team scored a total of 760 points to their opponents' 686 points. Richard Allred, Joe Brookshire, Gene Brown, Charles Daniels, Binford Farlow, Charles Fulp, Ed Gray, Connie Hardin, Cleo Hayes, Bruce Kirkman, Charles McCaskill, Bill Parker, Frank Routh, Leonard Surratt, Allen Wrenn, Arthur Wright, George Yow, and A. Two of the losses went to Seagrove's all-Senior sextet that has gone undefeated four years in regular season competition. Gray's Chapel, another Senior organization, set back the local lassies twice by the closest score possible. The Gray's Chapel contest was settled by a charity throw after the game was over. Possibly the high spot of the 1944 season was an easy victory over Ruffin, unbeaten in the twelve previous starts. Only two Seniors are listed on this year's squad, giving an optimistic outlook of things to come. Audrey Blake, Sarah Brown, Eliza Daniels, Sarah Durham, Marie Garner, Virginia Hanes, Margaret Hancock, Mary Herring, Ruth Hudson, Blanche jordan, Helen Lanier, Jessie Lawrence, Kathleen Luvette, Pearl Moon, Louise Pickard, Nancy Pickard, Edith Sutker, Anne Talley, Rachel Talley, Mildred Trogdon, Laura Robbins, Manager. - I U-IruuaulumntlvnusleBJ- -4- T zz 'em y- fix KOWLIQ AWQQVLEJ of THE CITY OF RANDLEIVIAN JIM LINEBERRY, Mayor + ALDERMEN: ERNEST TALLEY DR C D KISTLER FITZ PRESNELL JOHN RICE -L U-Irullsaanrmnuvouslf - IIIIIVINIII WEMTH HIISIERY IVIIllS INCORPORATED MANUFACTURERS OF Ladies' and Misses' Seamless Hosiery BRANDS RANDALE COMMONWEALTH GREEN SEAL EXECUTIVE OFFICES . ....,...
