Emil Stein, one of the Boys' State participants, finds time to be involved in many school clubs and organizations. Boy 'State lear basics It was very educational and informative about the principles of government, expressed Emil Stein, one of the Boys' Staters selected this year. During the week of Iune 13-19 the boys stayed at the Fallen Naval Air Station in North- ern Nevada near Reno. They received visits from the representatives of the Air Force, Naval, and Coast Guard academies. One day out of the week was spent in Carson City where the boys sat in the Senate and Legis- lature. Boys' Staters nominated and voted on issues concerning them in order to gain an understanding of how government works. Outstanding boys of high moral character, good sportsmanship, and potential leadership tendencies were the ones chosen for Boys' State. Young men attending Boys' State this year from Rancho are: Howard Bulloch, Emil Stein, and Brian Henzel. Boys' State 33

Dan Waite and Steve Wallace, were chosen to represent the views of their groups to the community through public media. Should draft evaders be given amnesty? What should be done to improve the educa- tional system? How should our foreign policy be revised? Should capital punishment be reinstated? How can inflation be curbed? These and many other controversial issues were the subject of this year's Sun Youth Forum. Tension soon filled the air and a few uncontrolled tempers flared as topics of per- sonal interest were discussed. Two Rancho students. Dan Waite and Steve Wallace, were chosen as finalists for their out- standing ability to express and argue their opin- ions. Selected by fellow participants, a finalist from each topic group was given the privilege of presenting a culmination of views, expressed during the discussions, to the community through an appearance on television or in the newspaper. sian.
