Runnin' team State bound Rancho's 1977 varsity team playing under Coach Ioe Stein had a won-lost season 16-5. The '77 team was the first team since 1973 to go as far as state. Three of the team members have been playing on the varsity team for three years: Mike Avance, Mike Slocum, and Ray Watson. The three co-captains were: Mike Avance, Robert Cobb, and Ray Watson. Ray Watson was the second leading scorer in the state, scoring at least 30 points each game. The Rams as a team were the highest scoring team in the state. Rancho outclassed many teams not because of height fRancho was the shortest team in our Division, our tallest man Mike Avance 6-45 but their speed, shooting, and rebound ability. The Rams first non-conference game was lost to Clark in an exciting game. After a slow start the Rams went forward in the longest winning streak in the state of Nevada. The first conference game was against Cor- man, the Rams were tied at the end of the first quarter 19-19, they put their defense into action and put through 32 points in the second quarter to their 22, from there on the Rams dominated the game winning 90-80. The game most will remember is the game against the Vegas Wild- cats last year's State champs at a home game. A good start is essential, as the Rams show, pushing for the lead I Runners go to State Rancho's Cross Country team, coached by William O'Dea, finished the season on the right foot. They ended their dual meets with a 11-2 record being beaten by only Western and Clark. The team ranked third in the zone meet which qualified them to go to State where they placed sixth. The team consisted of eight hard working, dedicated runners. The Bower brothers, Steve, senior, and Brent, sophomore, were the number one and number two runners on the team. But Coach O'Dea credited all the runners with a great season. Coach O'Dea stated, We had a lot of new talent on the team this year, and most of the boys have one to two years left to run. Next year we should really be up there in the stand- ings, and it should prove to be an excellent sea- son. 29 ' 43 Vegas Vo-Tech , ' 'f 1 f if Q , k , , - .- , ,W , ,. , . , I 1 'L ffigi ' ...- 5 W ' .,., ,V . 1 . . ,V K- H Q L , . f,:f pk, , ' V , A M' P' .tif ..
