'W' Z, - V 'J ., 3'f- In 1956 when Rancho first opened its doors there were none of the traditions that we have today. There was no fight song, no cheerleaders, and no symbols for us to look to. While this year was a beginning for Rancho it was a year of changes for our railroads. This was a time when the large railroads were shifting from steam engines to the modern diesel engines that we use today. Following the examples of U.S.C. and U.C.L.A. Mr. Slingsby, who was the Pep Club advisor at the time, saw the opportunity for Rancho to acquire its own victory bell. Following letters to several railroad companies a reply was received from the Grand Central Railroad of New York. They agreed to donate a bell to Rancho from one of their old steam powered engines that was due to be scrapped. The bell arrived early in 1957 but remained in storage for over a year. Then, with the assistance of the Industrial Arts department and the head custodian, a cart was made to carry the bell to various events. The bell was used in this fashion until four years ago when it was again put into storage. lt remained there until this year when it was re- discovered. Through Senior Advisory and with assistance by John Callard it was decided that a monument would be built to permanently house the bell in the quad.
