While this year was a beginning for Rancho it was a year of changes for our railroads. This was a time when the large railroads were shifting from steam engines to the modern diesel engines that we use today. Following the examples of U.S.C. and U.C.L.A. Mr. Slingsby, who was the Pep Club advisor at the time, saw the opportunity for Rancho to acquire its own victory bell. Following letters to several railroad companies a reply was received from the Grand Central Railroad of New York. They agreed to donate a bell to Rancho from one of their old steam powered engines that was due to be scrapped. The bell arrived early in 1957 but remained in storage for over a year. Then, with the assistance of the Industrial Arts department and the head custodian, a cart was made to carry the bell to various events. The bell was used in this fashion until four years ago when it was again put into storage. lt remained there until this year when it was re- discovered. Through Senior Advisory and with assistance by John Callard it was decided that a monument would be built to permanently house the bell in the quad. As a Senior Class project the bell and its housing will be dedicated to the graduating class of 1976 . L.,-.-rat.,-1-- ' B'-,,,,.-' -i -,,.---1'5? This year's A.S. B. cabinet was an active one. With a wide variety and cross section of officers, hardly any issues were missed which came under the heading of student activities. The A.S.B. did almost everything in the way of activities. From Home- coming to Graduation decorations: from introducing legislation to warm fuzzies. It was very seldom when A.S.B. passed some- thing by. A. S.B. President Kevin Araki, had a hard task. Besides running all the activities he worked with the administration, cabinet and the student body as well as having his own personal activities and classes. A.S.B. Vice-President Sylvia Fielder had many successful projects such as the A.S.B. Election Convention. A. S . B. Secretary Lisa Cross was the official record keeper at all of our meetings, and will be A.S.B. President for 1976-77. Activities commissioner Scott Graham was in charge of all dances and activities, along with Homecoming '75. Assemblies commissioner Debbie Allen was in charge of all Pep Assemblies. and Rallies. She was also president of C.A.S. C. Service Commissioner Vanessa Mott was in charge of all the canned food drives and was responsibleafor the Faculty Luncheon which the A. S.B. sponsored. Athletics commissioner Jack Glasser was responsible for all the sports events at Rancho. Publicity Commissioner Doug Cosgro was in charge of all general publicity for the Rancho campus and he was well noted for his warm fuzzy spree. Parliamentarian 'Cheryl Hauenstien worked hard on every activity and was in charge of Rancho's Accreditation Program . Once again A . S . Students learned to plant, feed, prune, and care for all types of plants. They also learned how to use different kinds of lawn and garden power tools. An important piece of equipment used in the class is a hothouse used for growing plants which require a warmer climate. Rancho is very lucky to have a Horticulture department. Very few high schools in the district have this program . A prerequisite of the basic classes pro- vides the required background needed in the more difficult areas. 'L' I I History The history classes here at Rancho cover not only the required classes, but also classes for almost any interest. These classes are taught in such a way that we learn, not only about the past, but the future as well. ll Of' Inu , . Business Department One of the most essential departments is the Business department. It offers many valuable classes necessary if you plan to go on in the business world. The types of classes offered at Rancho are Typing, Shorthand, Notehand, Business Machines, Bookkeeping, Clerical Recordkeeping, General Business, and Office Practice. These classes have proven to be highly successful . Home Economics In the Home Economics Department, both boys and girls enjoy a variety of prac- tical experiences in the food preparation, clothing construction, and home crafts, as well as learn important information on nutrition and getting your money's worth in purchasing and caring for food and clothing. Food classes are open to beginners as well as the experienced, and a variety of delicious baked goods and well-balanced meals are prepared in the course of a semester. Special occasions and holidays are celebrated with additional fun pro- jects. In clothing you can leam to make a simple top, shirt, skirt, pants, or even a tailored winter coat or spring formal. Are T shirts your thing? Sewing with knits is for you, then. Home Crafts will teach you everything you need to know to begin to crochet, knit, and quilt. i 4 - , I nr 5' , ..- usp' X t qv iw Mrs. Steele teaching the girls a drill. sd. Math Department Knowledge of math is an important part of everyone's life and Rancho's math department had something for everyone's needs. Prom Calculus to Proficiency Math courses were offered to help the students meet the graduation requirements and pre- pare themselves for the future . xg Drama Department The drama dept. consists of the usual drama I, II, III, IV, performing their school plays and doing short plays for the English Classes, also reading short plays and trying to improve their acting ability. Another part of Drama is the stage production class. This class is only 3rd period and you must audition in front of Ms. Flagg and judges to get into the class. This class will be performing Dr. Seuss tales for the elementary school students, and also for the Jr. High School students too. The reason the drama department has been so successful in the past, is due to student involvement and we hope to continue having a large turnout. Rancho's Bowling Team lOl Although the Loss. . . of 1975 League Championships was a great disappointment for the Varsity Cross-Country team, it must be remembered that the team has been League Champs the last five years. The team finished a successful dual meet season, the proud owners of a 5-1 record after a narrow 27-29 loss to La Quinta . The team is dominated by a group of five seniors who won the Mission Viejo Invitational. Throughout the year the team has been led by the talented twins, Tim and Tom Becker, who contributed 9:45 and 9:46 two-mile clockings to that Invitational win. Tom Randle has been a consistent 3rd man with Steve Neely and Bill Goeke filling out the top five. Two sophomores and two freshmen also found their way on the Varsity team with some consistency. Harold Besaw and Scott Shipley with Kenny Vargas and Steve Martinez have all made a major contribution to the team's outstanding season. 13 All League meets were held at Mile Square Park. 23 Scott Shipley way ahead of his opponents. 39 Tom Randle as he crosses the finish line. 45 Tom Randle as he circles the lake's edge . 55 Varsity Team: Ctop rowj Tom Becker: Tom Randle: Steve Neelyg Tim Becker. The team was led throughout by senior Steve Besaw who won all of his races at Mile Square Park. Steve used the backing of several other outstanding distance runners to earn the undefeated season. This year has been no exception as our group of young runners raced unbeaten through eight opponents this year. Taking advantage of exceptional talent from Kenny Vargas and Steve Martinez this team has earned tournament trophies on three occasions, with a victory in the Mission Viejo Invitational. V r' A Rancho's Varsity Football Team anticipated a successful season this year in spite of the strong competition in the Garden Grove League. However many elements offset the high hopes of the Vaqueros. Fifteen of the Vaquero's starters were sidelined for part of the season due to injuries. Forty-one times during the season, the Vaqs turned the ball over to their opponents. The result was the most unsuccessful season that Rancho has had since 1963 when they were 1 and 8. Rancho's one bright spot of the season was their 19-16 win over arch-rival , Garden Grove. The Argos eventually won the league title and advanced farther in the C. l. F. playoffs than any other team in the history of the Garden Grove League. Members of the Vaquero 1975 Varsity team were honored by the league for their outstanding performances. Russ Buenafe, the team captain, was selected as defensive back on the first team all league. Brian Case, Rancho's most valuable player, was selected on the second team all league. Honorable mention was awarded to Joe Parsons as defensive end and Chris Radke as offensive receiver. The Rancho coaching staff honored Jeff Pettit as the recipient of the 100070 award. The most improved player selected by team members and coaches was Kevin Jeffries. The Vaqueros will return twenty lettermen for next year's Hawaii- bound team. Girls Volleyball The 1975 volleyball season proved to be an interesting and challenging one for both players and coaches. The varsity team was represented by at least one person from each class, and this was the first year they played together. The girls had to perfect their skills and learn to work together as a team, at the same time that they were competing. These handicaps did not discourage them, however. This was also the first time since 1967 that Rancho made the C.I.F. playoffs. Rancho played many 4A schools during the season and still ended up with an 11-7 record . They only lost to one 3A division school the entire year. The team was led by juniors Byron Sims and Mark Maurer, who provided most of the offense . The team also had two sophomore starters in Brian Sims and goalie John Levesque . The nucleus of the team was comprised of seniors Tom Gay, Kip O'Neill, Stitch Siems, Cam Siems, Henry Ishii, and Mike Dufault. Also contributing tremendously were juniors David Crain and Lance Fryer. Following in the Tradition of past Rancho golf teams, the 1975-76 Vaquero team made its presence felt. This year's team was bolstered by five returning lettermen. Leading the team were Seniors: Tom Vanquez, Bob Egglehoff, and Steve Brown, with pressure being applied by juniors: Mike Doyel, Tom Layton, and John Phelp. Only four or five shots separated all six players and this gave Rancho a very balanced team. The 1975-76 golf coaches, Mr. Burns and Mr. Osborne, gave the team much support and assistance. g iv,-s,,2r,f:-as Jf5.L1.g.f'et 19 Bob Egglehoff 25 Bobby Dufalt 31 Coaches Burns and Osborne 43 Tom Vasquez 53 Don Billhardt 63 Mike Doyle 75 David Gorgie 85 Steve Brown 'WU' 1 65 Girls' Softball this year was expected to be tops in the league competition for the C.I.F. title. lt promised to be a very good season for the girls, who had been practicing very hard everyday to get in shape. The varsity was composed primarily of experi- enced and talented seniors who are working hard to make this our most successful season yet. Mike Whiting, Kevin Araki , and Perry Smith handled most of the passing chores, while Dave Wear, Phil and Todd Ripa, and Rick Anderson did a lot of spik- ing. Scott Graham and Mike Page add good defensive play. The junior varsity was mostly underclassmen striving to follow the traditions set by the varsity. Frank Sabot, Stan Vasquez, Mark Sands, Berry Faulkner, and Craig Anderson, along with Dana Swartz, Tim Moore, and Rick Shaffer were some of the many promising freshmen on the squad. Mike Mead, Pat Fitz- gerald, and Jim Dufault added experience and leadership to the 42 ICBITI. It was also expected said Coach Kepley that the team will do even better than last year's team that went to the finals. Coach Kepley said she believed they would take at least two of the four District positions. They also had many good new- fu? xt, - fn comers that were very interested in participating this year. 13 Karen Nielson playing singles. U Art and Literature VOICE INSIDE As I walked into the house I heard somebody calling. Hey! Hey you! I looked all around. then thought to myself , I'm going crazy. I knew nobody else was home. Down here on the floor. when I looked down I realized my brother's levis were talking. Now listen! I have been quiet long enough. I have to get some- thing off my pockets. All I could do was take the nearest seat. My name is Lee, and today is my birthday. Do you realize I am three years old? Yep, I've been living with your brother for three years. Believe me- it hasn't been easy. Being a pair of levis is a rough job. Keith always forgets to wash me - sometimes I get washed once a month. And I really hate it when Keith goes to all those stupid parties. He has to act big, spilling beer and wine on me. I hate beer and wine. I'd rather have mixed drinks. When it's around twelve o'c1ock, the party is going strong, the music loud enough to make the walls shake, and me - I'm wet from waistline to cuffline, drunker than a skunk. About this time Keith has to go outside into the cold air so he can look at his friends' motorcycles. As they fiddle with the greasy parts. Keith sits in the dirt which turns into mud as soon as it touches me. Then Keith always wipes his black hands on me. It is very difficult to breathe with all that gunk filling my pores. About three or four o'clock, we get up to go home. And like every other night, I'm thrown on the floor. By this time I'm so exhausted, I want a good night's sleep. Instead. the dog comes running in, and plunk, he lies on me. That wouldn't be so bad except he scratches all night long, and throws all his fleas on me! Sorry for bothering you, but I just had to tell somebody why I look so old and worn out. As Lee said this, Keith walked into the room and picked his levis up. As I tumed to leave the room , I heard Lee whisper, If there is any truth to reincar- nation, in my next life I think I will be a motorcycle. Everybody takes care of them. It left its mark behind. The old grey barn will sleep no more . Nadine Bergstrom 11th Grade 60 Self Beside the fire I read my book Within a world my own.
