Mrs. Kirkman ltop leftl and Mrs. Smith ltop rightl pounded typewriters steadily those first few weeks. Within a month after the opening of school they finally emerged from behind the high stacks of books and the library was open for business. Foreword A baby taking its first steps is weak and wobbly -- but to its doting parents those first steps are historic, monumental, earthshaking. ln Rancho's first year many new steps have been taken into new, untrod territory. Each step is important because it sets a pattern for events that follow. Thus, we have chosen Firsts as the theme for this year's annual. We have seen many firsts at Rancho this year. We have seen our young student body set- ting forth on wobbly legs into new experiences. We have been privileged to be a part of this young student body and thus its first steps have been our first steps. We hope the steps taken by future Vaqueros in Rancho's student body will be more sure and confident because of the groundwork laid by us.

When we returned to school lost fall one ofthe first things we noticed was that grass, shrubs and trees had transformed the dusty rectangle into a campus landmark. Evidence that our cam- pus is still growing is gymnosium construction.
