Each step is important because it sets a pattern for events that follow. Thus, we have chosen Firsts as the theme for this year's annual. We have seen many firsts at Rancho this year. We have seen our young student body set- ting forth on wobbly legs into new experiences. We have been privileged to be a part of this young student body and thus its first steps have been our first steps. We hope the steps taken by future Vaqueros in Rancho's student body will be more sure and confident because of the groundwork laid by us. .-sq .- su 24- Ev 'O B ' .l .fv -r -l -'-af A. '- a'k - 4 H. LEROY L. DOIG, who has been district superintendent for 30 years, will retire this year, leaving a worthy record of achievement. The dis- trict enrollment was 200 with one small high school in 1928 when he took over. Tremendous growth of the city added to administrative re- sponsibilities of the district which is now educat- ing an all-time high enrollment of 3,494 high school students. Rancho was planned and open- ed during the closing years of Dr. Doig's ad- ministration and a third high school lnow under- wayl is due to be completed in 1959. Garden Grove High School District and Rancho truly owe much to this far-sighted and able leader. i...-.fm .........-. lll ll -1--Y , .....i.... Equally important are the students working behind the scenes to produce them -writing stories, typing, copy- reading, proofreading, headlining, making-up, taking photos, writing captions, selling ads, and planning. These activities are under the direction of two editors-Sandy Finley of La Voz and Pat Maxfield of El Conquistador, with capable assistance from staff members. mi. fe, yi 1 fell? 1- K COMPANY jf .Xi ? x f Pat Moxfield, Editor El Con uistador --flea' 5 fm -'X Lynn Myers, Pat Moxfield, and Pat Crenshaw lseatedl look over yearbook dummy with Joyce Garon, Linda Huggins, Jan Land, Reggie Woods, Mike Robinson, Dick Rohweder, and Mike Reedy looking on in second row. Editors Postsczyvt Much has happened since the last land firstl edition of EI Conquistador. We hope this annual will remind you of all the fun you had this year. We tried to take pic- tures to cover as many phases of school life as possible. Since memories alone are incapable of holding all the aspects of the 1957-58 school year, this book will live. The book will live until it is consumed by some hungry, old trunk in a corner of the attic. Even then the book will not be dead. While trapped in this dark and musty prison it maintains a terrific amount of potential energy which bursts out in a maze of colorful and prec- ious memories whenever the book is re-opened. Now my iob as editor is finished, except to express my sincere appreciation to all who helped make this a memorable book. Special thanks go to Reggie Woods, our cartoonist, Dick Rohweder and Mike Reedy, photographers, Pat Crenshaw, business manager, Tony Afdahl, sports editor, and Lynn Myers, copy editor, for all the hours of work they did. - Thanks also to Jan Land, Sue Allen, Linda Huggins, Melvina Howard, Judy Reed, Linda Hanover, Sheryl An- derson, Mike Robinson, Sandy Finley, Ron White, .lo Ann Luthin, Valerie Ball, and Judy Harker, who each helped in some way. Mr. Dick Beam of Robert's Studio, the staff of Year- book House, Mr. Harry Caywood of S. K. Smith Covers, and the Garden Grove Daily News all furnished technical advice and assistance which were invaluable. Without the help of our iournalism advisor, Miss Betty Coxson, our problems would never have been solved. To you, Miss Coxson, I would like to extend the staff's and my most sincere thanks and gratitude. It has been hard work, but a.lso fun putting out this book. I'm glad it's over . . . but l'd do it again.
