'T , ,M -'X T Q n USS RAMSEY is the second of a new class ofU.S. Navy com- batant ships, the guided missile ocean escort. She is the first of the Navy to be named after Ad- miral DeWitt Clinton RAMSEY, USN, former Vice Chief of Na- val Operations and former Commander-in-Chief,U.S. Pa- cific Fleet. USS RAMSEY was built by Lockheed Shipbuilding Company in S e a tt le, Washington, and commissioned at Puget Sound N a v al Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington, on 3 June 1967. Her first Commanding Officer was Commander W. D. ROBERTSON, USN. On 22 March 1968, USS RAMSEY became flagship of Commander Destroyer Squad- ron 29 QCOMDESRON 295, and on 30 April, not yet a year old, she departed Long Beach, Cali- fornia, on her first WesternPa- cific CWESTPACJ deployment to operate as a unit of the United States Seventh Fleet. While de- ployed, RAMSEY served as Anti- Submarine Warfare QASWJ coordinator for various units of the Seventh Fleet in the Gulf of Tonkin in support of operations against the enemy. RAMSEY returned to Long Beach on 9 November 1968, and on 14 November, Commander A. J. ASHURST, USN, became RAMSEY's second Commanding Officer. RAMSEY remained in Long Beach until 4 January 1969, when she departed for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for a two and one-half month Post Shakedown Availability. Returning to Long Beachin March 1969, RAMSEY conducted local operations in prepara- tion for her second deployment to WESTPAC. In July, USS AL- BERT DAVID QDE-10503 as- sumed RAMSEY's duties as COMDESRON 29 flagship. RAMSEY departed Long Beach on her second deploy- ment on 8 October 1969. While deployed, RAMSEY served as escort for carriers of the Sev- enth Fleet and also performed as ASW training ship on sev- eral occasions. RAMSEY returned to Long Beach on 18 April 1970. On 6 July she commenced her first regular overhaul at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Four days later, on 10 July, Commander John M. LEAVER, USN, became RAMSEY's third Commanding Officer. On 11 December 1970, Commander Cruiser - Destroyer Flotilla 7, Rear Admiral Robert S. SALZER, USN, presented to Operations, Engineering, Sup- ply, and Weapons Departments, as well as the ASW E Award. In March 1971 RAMSEY completed her overhaul period and commenced local operations in preparation for her third de- ployment. On 1 April RAMSEY became a member of newly- formed Destroyer Squadron 35. RAMSEY departed Long Beach on her third deployment on 2 June 1971. COIVIMANDING OFFICER JOHN M. LEAVER, CDR, USN 10JuIy 1970 - Present Commander John M. LEAVER was commissioned Ensign in 1955 through the NROTC CRegularb program at Dartmouth University. His initial tour of duty was Weap- ons Officer, USS McCORD QDD- 544l homeported in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1959 CDR LEAVER re- ported for a two year tour of duty as an instructor in Naval Weapons at the Officer Candi- date School, Newport, Rhode Island. In 1960 he reported as Operations Officer of USS MISS- ISSINEWA CAO-1445 which was homeported in Naples, Italy. His next assignment took him to San Diego, California, where he assumed command of USS SUM- NER COUNTY QLST-11485 in 1962. After a successful two year tour, CDR LEAVER re- turned to Europe for two years of study as a student at the German General Staff College. In 1966 he returned to Norfolk, Virginia, where he served for two years as the Executive Of- ficer, USS W. M. WOOD QDD- 715J. His next assignment was at the Bureau of Naval Per- sonnel as the Surface LCDR Assignment Officer until Janu- ary 1970. CDR LEAVER as- sumed cornmand of USS RAM- SEY QDEG-27 on 10 July 1970. Commander LEAVER is married to the former Claire SNYDER of Scituate, Massachu- settes. They reside in West- minister, California, with their two sons, Robert Bruce and Edward Scott. EXECUTIVE OFFICER WALTER W. SALMON, JR., LCDR, USN 8 March 1970 - 29 September 1971 Lieutenant Commander Walter W. SALMON, Jr., was born in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, on 17 April 1934. After gradu- ating from Rutgers University in 1957, he attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and was com- missioned Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve on 1 No- vember 1957. His initial tour of duty was as Radio Officer, USS ALBANY QCA-1235. LCDR SAL - MON's next two duty stations kept him ashore for3 1X2 years, the first as an administrative assistant at Strategic Air Com- mand, Atlantic CSACLANTJ, then as a member of the Crypto Circuits Unit at Direc- tor, Naval Security Group QDIRNAVSECGRUJ ,Head- quarters. In April 1962, LCDR SALMON reported aboard USS NEWPORT NEWS QCA -1483 for duty as Navigator and Com- bat Information Center QCICJ Officer. In May 1965 he was assigned to USS GYATT IDD- 712J as Operations Officer. Two years with the Ministry of Defense Intelligence Desk Office, London, followed, after which LCDR SALMON attend- ed the Armed Forces Staff Col- lege and Tartar Missle School, Vallejo, California. LCDR SALMON assumed duties as Executive Officer, USS RAMSEYQDEG-21, in March 1970. On 29 September 1971 he was relieved by LCDR LANE, his next duty station to be Com- manding Officer, USS LANG QDE-10703. LCDR SALMON is married to the former Nances M. BEN- NETT of Moorestown, New Jer- sey. They have two children: Bradley Paul and Barbara Marie. Lieutenant Commander Glynn Q. LANE, Jr., was com- missioned Ensign on 29 Janu- ary 1961 through the NROTC Program at the University of Oklahoma. His first duty station was the USS FURSEQDDR-8825. While on board he filled the billets of Anti-Submarine War- fare CASWD Officer, First Lieu- tenant, and Weapons Officer. In October 1963, LCDR LANE was assigned to the U.S. Naval De- stroyer School, Newport, Rhode Island, as a student. Upongrad- uation he served aboard USS BRINKLEY BASS QDD-8875 as Engineer Officer. In August 1966 he reported to the NROTC Unit at the University of Ne- braska where he was Assistant Professor of Naval Science in Engineering, Navigation, UCMJ, Administration, and Leader- ship. In July 1968, LCDR LANE was ordered to the U.S. Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated with distinction and also completed his Master's Degree with George Washington University. LCDR LANE is authorized to wear the following awards: Navy Commendation Medal fwith Combat VD, Navy Unit Com- mendation, Combat Action Rib- bon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal fseven campaignsy, Vietnam Honor Medal First Class, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Meritorious Unit Com- mendation, and the Vietnamese Service Medal.
